Chapter 3: Doctor Bill

Inside the hospital, Matthew and his Mother clutched Hazel for dear life, trying to give her warmth as her body temperature started declining. Being Earth Mages, they didn't get treated fairly and were put in last place in the emergency queue. "GET ME A DOCTOR, MY DAUGHTER IS DYING!" Matthew's Mother screamed, absolutely pissed off at the staff for still treating them as such in such a dire situation.

Matthew was zoned out, doing nothing but stare soullessly at the ground. He felt angry, shocked, sad and powerless. 'This is unfair, this is unfair, this is unfair, this is unfair, this is unfair" Matthew looped inside his head.

From the other side of the crowd, a fat man wearing a yellow suit and tie heard the yelling of Matthew's Mother. He licked his lips and made his way towards her.

Her eyes, desperate and erratic, Matthew's Mother looked around pleadingly at the staff. They all just looked back at her, disgusted and annoyed that a pitiful earth mage dared to even step foot inside the hospital.

They were about to call in security until a fat man in a yellow suit bellowed, "What are you all doing! Didn't you take the vow? To heal all who are injured no matter what?".

Looking towards the source of the sudden shouting, the Doctors and nurses just looked down in shame as they saw who said it.

"Get the girl and bring her into my office!" He ordered. "I want a full team of nurses to aid me in this endeavor!".

Hearing his voice that commanded supreme authority in the hospital, Matthew looked up to see him. To Matthew, he looked like a fat angel that fell from heaven just to save his younger sister. Matthew's Mother jumped to her feet and thanked the man madly, tears falling from her face.

A team of medics brought Hazel away in a stretcher as Matthew's Mother ran along side her, bringing her inside a room full of trophies and honors.

"This looks like Mana Overload, bring me pure mana stones and blue liquid mana bags" The Fat Doctor ordered.

. . .

Waiting outside the room as paramedics rushed in and out of the room, Matthew's Mother trembled with fear as she listened to Hazel's heart rate monitor, listening intently to each beep as the seconds passed by, feeling like hours. The Paramedics would go in with massive bowling ball sized stones of pure white and come back out with the same balls, teeming with a blue fluorescent light, after each stone was brought out. A medic would rush in with a bag filled with a liquid of the same texture. This routine repeated until finally, the fat Doctor came out of the room, face laced with sweat.

"Your daughter had an extreme case of Mana Overload, lucky you brought her over to us this quickly or else she might have been crippled her entire life" He said, wiping sweat off his face.

"Thank you! Thank you so so much Doctor, I owe you my life!" Matthew's Mother replied, gripping Bill's hands firmly.

Brushing her off gently, the Doctor smiled gently as he told her that it was the right thing to do. "It's Doctor Bill, bring your daughter here every week for a daily checkup in case she stockpiles on mana accidentally again".

Nodding in agreement, she went to go pick up Hazel when Bill intervened. "Hazel has to stay in the hospital for an extra day or so to make sure that she's fine, standard medical procedure".

"O-oh, is that so? Okay then, if it's alright can we stay overnight?" Matthews Mother asked.

"No, apologies, hospital security is strict, so strict that it gets to the point where mothers can't even stay with their children" Bill turned down.

"But you can just tell them to let us stay right?" Matthews Mother said.

Shaking his head and letting out a little sigh, Bill looked at Matthew's Mother. "I'm sorry, but even my jurisdiction doesn't go that far".

"Oh...ok then, please look after her for the night then!" Bowed Matthew's Mother. "Farewell for now, see you tomorrow".

"Wait Madam, before you go, your name please?" Bill inquired.

Stopping in her tracks for a second, she hesitated for a second before saying "It's Mary".

"Mary what?" Bill furthered, trying to get her full name.

"Mary...Herzia, It's Mary Herzia".

Doing a quick bow before leaving the door, Mary looked back at her sleeping daughter who was strapped to 3 different machines, the sight made her quiver in fear and sadness but she believed in Doctor Bill. She turned her head towards the hallway and started making her way to the exit, wishing she could stay near her daughter during her time of need.

Matthew, who until now was in a daze stemming from a massive mixture of negative emotions, stared at the crack in the door, seeing Doctor Bill stare at Hazel with weird eyes before noticing the crack in the door. Matthew hid for cover out of instinct as Bill closed the door, not quite understanding why he was looking at Hazel like that. Brushing it off as just a Doctor thing, Matthew ran to catch up with his Mother who was currently at the exit.

. . .

Arriving home, Mary opened the door to her house with her own custom key and when she finally made it in, she collapsed. Matthew, seeing his mother falling to the ground, willed the ground to turn soft. She fell with a poompf on the ground, falling asleep immediately, leaving Matthew to haul her over to her room. Though their house had a small exterior, it actually was pretty big as it had a massive basement. Not wanting to carry his mother the entire way, Matthew raised the ground underneath his mother and created wheels on all of the sides, attempting to just wheel her to bed.

Proving successful, Matthew slowly pushed her downstairs as he turned the steep stairs to a smooth ramp, showing off a bit to no one in particular. Finally arriving at his mother's bed, he lifted the earth off the air and placed his mother gently on her bed, stirring her a little from the impact. "Hazel...don't...go...my sweet..." She murmured.

Choking back a yelp of sadness, Matthew slowly closed the door and made his way to his own bedroom, cushioning the walls to make them soundproof before breaking down into a storm of sadness. On his mind as he was wailing was how unfair the people treated him because he was an Earth Mage, just because somebody a long time ago did something bad didn't mean that he needed to be punished for it. The ground around him started to break down into tiny molecules and rise up into the air as he continued crying his heart out. He was only 8, why was he forced into this position?
