Chapter 3: Bold but dumb
"Ji Hoon? Are you sure you're fine with accompanying her to school?" Mother asked once more after scolding me for commanding him to walk me to school. "Yeah. What harm could come from that? Besides It's my responsibility as your son in law." He replied smiling.
"Ok. Thank you so much""no need to thank me mother" he replied as he held my hand and led me out of the store. We walked for a while until we reached the school. "Ok. Bye, I'll see you later" he said as we waved me goodbye and left.
I walked into my class and sat down. I noticed some of my classmates gossiping and giggling from the moment I entered the class. I wonder what's wrong? Nevertheless, I have never been one to care about what others think or say about me.
All of a sudden Bang Shim walked over to my table. "The 6th graders are having a party and we 5th graders are invited. Everyone has a date already, but... who will sad old Bong Cha go out with?" His voice was as annoying as usual. "So is that why you all are laughing?" I asked almost sarcastic as the room fell silent. Bang Shim burst into laughter and soon after everyone else.
"How would you ever get a date you're so ugly!" Some kid commented. "I heard that her red hair and freckles are real. That's even worse. She barely fits into the Korean beauty standards" another kid commented. "Forget about beauty she doesn't even have friends. How would she even get a date?"
"Well jokes on you cause I already have a date and I'm going to bring him for the party tomorrow." I spoke out boldly "Oh yeah? And what grade could that be? Cause I'm sure that no one on the 5th grade would date you" Bang Shim scornfully replied. "You're right. He's in grade 10" I said, not even thinking it through.
The class burst into laughter once more. "You're not even in middle school yet, and you're saying that a high school boy would date you?" Bang Shim said, barely able to hold his laughter back. "You'll see" I said as I sat down and opened my book. I didn't want to read, but I wanted to look busy. I'll show him! I'll show them all!! Ji Hoon will go to the party with me then they'll know.
{*after school }
"Oppa! Oppa!" I was calling out to Ji Hoon while he was playing basketball with his friends. Maybe he doesn't recognize me calling him Oppa. I should just call him by name. "Ji Hoon!!" He finally turned around. He hinted his friends to continue playing and we walked up to me. Sweat slowly trickled down his face and he was a bit out of breath.
He leaned closer to me (since I was way shorter than him). "What?" He asked forcing a smile (I think he is irritated about something) "I was calling you Oppa. Why didn't you answer?" I asked anticipating his apologies. He stood straight for a while and brushed his hand through his messy hair. He let out a sigh and finally spoke "Oppa is usually used to refer to either an older brother or a boyfriend. I am none of those so why would I answer that?"
"Because you're my boyfriend" I replied getting a bit angry. "I am not. Now go find something else to do or go home" he said as he turned around and started walking away. "Oppa!" I called out to him but he didn't answer, he kept walking towards his friends. "Ji Hoon, why are you ignoring me. I am your girlfriend!!!" I yelled and all his friends turned around and stared at me.
" For the last time, number one, I don't know you, go home! Number two, I am not your boyfriend!" he said as he continued walking. His words pricked me hard. I didn't even realize when I had burst into tears. But I'm not going to let him embarrass me like this. I suddenly let out a loud scream. I rushed up to him and started hitting him continuously as hard as I could. He didn't even budge, I couldn't do any damage to him.
"See? You're just a child. Go home!" He said in a very blunt tone. I burst into tears as I ran home.
