"Move it, trash", a boy shoved Ian.

The saying that a trash will always be a trash has always applied to a boy named Ian.
He, as long as he could remember, has always been an orphan and was left to live in an old and decrepit orphanage funded by the federation government like millions of other orphanages after the Great Change.
The Great Change, which occurred seven hundred years ago, on the year of 2024, was the biggest calamity and catastrophe that had ever befell earth.
It was a single portal which appeared out of nowhere in the sky. It was humongous, and death black.
It only appeared all of a sudden, and from it came feral animals and monsters never before seen in neither history, folklore nor myths.
The monsters, from the point where they dropped to the earth from the portal, began to rampage through to all corners of the world. The world fought back, yet was overwhelmed by the monsters endless horde.
In less than a week, countries and millions of humans were reported dead, and almost all communication system were destroyed or disabled.
It seems as if they were being controlled by other monsters of higher destructive power.
Thousands of strongholds were quickly constructed all around the world as the remaining world leaders tries to save humanity's last beings. And even with all these,it was still a massacre.
Humans soon figured out more about these beasts; it was found out that most, except for those of the lowest tier which hadn't evolved had crystal like spheres in their heads.
Humans named it cores.
These cores were found to contain a large amount of energy and was soon being used as substitute everywhere to make better weapons, and make their strongholds better for living and protection.
The skin ( hide and/or furs) of the beasts are also used as protection and the claws were also made into weapons with strong durability in fights. in all, the core almost became the currency.
And even with all the modifications and technological breakthroughs in ways of protecting strongholds and its inhabitants, better living and use of newer weapons to repel the monsters, humanity still suffers as strongholds were still being lost in brief skirmishes with monsters.
It was about three hundred years after the appearance of the Great Change, that a new way of using beast cores to empower the human's body came to being: humans can absorb the energy in the cores!
