Chapter 12: Ch. 12 - Second Day

It was the following day. I had rested nicely the night before, and I woke up before the roosters started crowing. In this rare moment of peace, I began to reflect on yesterday.

Thinking about the events that had transpired yesterday, I subconsciously rubbed my left eye. I was still getting used to being only able to see with one eye. I was gradually getting better at maintaining my balance and slowly getting accustomed to my new perception of distance. I acknowledged that my left side would forever remain my biggest weakness now due to my limited field of view.

*Cock-a-doodle-doo*

The roosters started crowing. I rubbed the head of Zain, my pet rat, before beginning to get dressed. Through our spiritual connection, I knew that Zain was keeping itself busy by exploring the school campus during the day. With its progress, it'll probably know the school grounds better than even professors by the end of this week.

After getting dressed, I immediately headed towards the cafeteria. Although I was heading towards the cafeteria, I wasn't feeling hungry due to eating very late yesterday. I was going to the cafeteria primarily to meet Valde and to see how Ronald was doing.

Walking into the cafeteria, I wasn't surprised to see that Valde was already waiting for me. Sitting down next to him, I asked, "Have you seen Ronald yet?"

"He's over there," Valde said while pointing towards one direction.

I looked towards where Valde was pointing to see Ronald sitting by himself in a very isolated spot in the cafeteria. I noticed that the people who were sitting close to Ronald were pointing and snickering at him.

"What are they talking about?"

"They're insulting Ronald." (Valde)

"How bad is it?"

"It's pretty bad. The beast people students consider Ronald to be a coward for running away from the sacrant, and the noble students call him a failure for being saved by a thin-blood." (Valde)

"Both of those statements seem very unjustified. In what world is Ronald able to take down the Sacrant? The only and best decision for him was to run away. And, what's wrong with me saving him? Do the noble students believe he should've died instead?"

"I fully agree with you; however, regardless of their statement's holes, they will continue to spread them." (Valde)

"Should we go talk to him now?

"No. Knowing Ronald, he'll think that we're pitying him. It'll only make the situation worse." (Valde)

"So, you're saying that we should do nothing as untrue negative statements about Ronald spread in the school?"

"It doesn't sound great, but yes. Hopefully, those statements will die down soon. If we try to help Ronald now, it'll only feed those statements." (Valde)

"So there's absolutely nothing we could do to help."

"No, there is, but it'll do more harm than good." (Valde)

Sigh...

----

Our first class was History of the Magical World. During the class, we didn't speak with Ronald, and Ronald didn't talk to us. We kept a distance between us. Now being closer to Ronald, I could tell that it has been tough on him. He didn't look as energized and vibrant as he typically was and carried a regretful and sad feeling with him. I looked at Valde, and he shook his head.

The class ended without any hiccups, and we started heading towards our Study of Magical Creatures class.

----

"There you are, you lucky bastard!" Thundered Professor Joseph.

"Do you know how worried I was when I heard you were attacked by the Sacrant you twerp? You better be thanking your lucky stars for being here today." (Professor Joseph)

"Good morn.."

"Ha ha ha ha ha! You should've seen the look on Miss Kimberly's face when she found about your accident. For a moment, it looked like she was going to try to kill me. If it weren't for us being in the same room with Headmaster Bonner, she would've attacked me then and there for sure." (Trainer Joseph)

"Ha ha ha," I laughed along awkwardly, not knowing how to respond.

"Who knew that wretched woman had that kind of side to her. Going past that, I give you my condolences for what has happened to your left eye. It's truly an unlucky scenario. Now, where's that Ronald brat? I better give him a good spanking cause he's the lad at fault here. You're the victim of his actions." (Trainer Joseph)

"No, Professor Joseph. What happened wasn't Ronald's fault. He didn't intend for any of this to happen. Please don't blame him. "

Professor Joseph looked at me carefully and then sighed in defeat.

"Aight lad. You've got a big heart. Go get ready for class now." (Trainer Joseph)

Just as I was walking to my seat, I heard Professor Joseph mutter to himself, "Sadly, the good people are the ones who die first in this world."

Right as Professor Joseph finished muttering to himself, the door to the "classroom" was pushed open, and in came Ronald.
