Chapter 139: Date For Real

"Are you sure you're going back?" Paul asked worriedly as he watched Maverick peacefully standing against the rails of the balcony facing the direction of the ocean but because it was now dark outside, instead of the beautiful view of the aquamarine color of the ocean, it was now just the eerie sight of the pitch-black horizon. Still, for Maverick, it felt peaceful and calming because he liked the cold sea breeze that grazed his skin and the calming sound of the waves crashing against the sand.
"Hmm, I've been away for months and my brothers are already looking for me. This is enough and I think I'm fine now. Please let me thank you again Paul for all your help until now," Maverick replied with a soft smile. He's been away for more than two months already and he's afraid that if he still didn't return, his brothers and grandfather would start to get worried and maybe hire professionals to go and find him. After all, he didn't say where he was going or who he was with. He just told them vaguely that he was going somewhere to relax his mind from all that had happened to him and that he would come back soon.
He didn't say that he was going to spend time at one of the Hymlyn rest houses far away from the city or that he was going to spend more than three months there with Paul.
"It's fine. I enjoyed the time I spent with you as well and I think I needed it too. It's surprising how therapeutic it is to be away from people and all the pressure that brings, I think this was what I was looking for all this time," Paul conveyed, flashing the same soft smile towards the Omega. Back then when the pain he felt was still fresh, he thought leaving the country would help but now he knew that it didn't.
He realized that now after being together with Maverick for more than two months. At first, he was just worried about the Omega but instead, he discovered a lot of things about himself. He also didn't know until now that he got along pretty well with the Omega and that they both have very similar interests. Of course, there were some awkward moments and also times where they almost made the same 'mistake' again but they quickly warmed up to each other since they both had wounded hearts.
"Yeah, I wish it could stay like this forever... but we need to go back. I'm sure everyone's looking for you too, and again, I apologized for dragging you along with me," Maverick expressed despite clearly saying that he could leave him alone if he wanted to, Paul never did. Instead, he stayed with him and brought him to various places to experience fun for the first time just like he promised he would.
Everyone knew Paul Hymlyn recently took over the Hymlyn Corporation so he shouldn't have the leisure to play around with him but he did. Just to honor his promise, he left his responsibilities, he went away on a trip without telling everyone when he was going back. Maverick even heard the Alpha a couple of times talking to his parents on his phone but he never once did pressure him to go back. Instead, he got worried when he told him that he planned to return tomorrow.
Truly, he was such a nice guy. Almost too perfect that he wondered why his cousin let such a man go. If it was him, he would have not done such a thing.
"It's fine really. I promised you that I would take you on fun dates and I'm sure mom and dad trusts my decisions," Paul chuckled, this time he got closer to Maverick and put over his shoulder the coat he brought because the breeze was too cold and he was afraid the Omega might catch a cold. Maverick felt touched at the gesture and he stared at Paul for a couple of seconds before he sighed.
"You are truly such a good guy, Paul. I can guarantee you'd treat your precious person like a queen when you find them," Maverick mentioned while deep inside wondering why he didn't just fall in love with him. Why did he have to fall in love with Mo Tian Zi who was nothing but almost cold to him all this time. He knew he had no chance but he still chose to hurt himself. In the end, there was no one else he could blame but himself.
"I doubt I'd be able to find them in this lifetime," Paul replied as he continued to chuckle at Maverick's words. At this point, he had already given up on finding love and thought things like this should not be rushed. It'll come if it'll come but he won't hate anyone if it doesn't come to him. Daniella had broken his heart into a million pieces and although it's all back into one now, it had become so fragile that a simple touch could break it again. He may have not loved Fyre like he had loved Daniella or liked him as he had with Daniel, but the little courage he had when he confessed to him and ended up getting rejected, dropped down his confidence. In the end, he decided things like love were just really not meant for him.
He thought he could do it with Fyre but in the end, fate slapped him with a huge "NO". It was almost funny when he thought about it. Maybe it's his punishment for planning to use Fyre to fill the hole he had in his soul.
"Don't be like that, you're still too young so don't lose hope. You'll definitely find them someday, you never know... maybe you've already met them back in London and just hadn't realized it yet. I know for the fact that for me, I'll find them someday, maybe even sooner than I think," Maverick encouraged before playfully tapping the Alpha's back. He was having a moment earlier while looking at the dark horizon but now Paul was being gloomier than him.
"I don't know. I really admire your positivity but as for me, I've never been with that many women or Omegas back there and most of them are married so it may take a while. I just give up on looking for now." Paul replied while thinking as he crossed his arms over his chest. He had only ever been with that one woman for a one-night-stand and after that, he was so busy with work that he barely had the time to think about women or Omegas. Truthfully, in the past years, Maverick was the only one he had spent so much time with and also the person he shared a bed with after years of unintentional abstinence.
"I don't really have a choice, right? But really? Not even one lover? It's not like you're not attractive."
"Yeah! I didn't have one. I was so busy with work."
"Are you sure it's not because of Daniella?" Maverick mentioned, making Paul sigh. He did say that he was fine mentioning her name because it's not that he still has feelings for his past lover but he just didn't like remembering the fact that he was so blinded by love that it made him look like an idiot. He didn't want to remember such a dark past that if he could just travel to the past, he would have punched his past self so he'd wake up.
"Yes, so far, you're the only person I had spent so much time with after her," Paul replied without much of a thought that once he realized it, both he and Maverick suddenly turned silent because both of them already decided to forget about the things that happened between them but truthfully, how can one forget about such things? This was the reason why sometimes things would become awkward between them like what was happening now.
"Hey..." After a long awkward silence, Paul began to talk, catching Maverick's attention. "Happiness is not something you can just find in romantic relationships. There are so many things that can make people happy... I'd like to say that to you but not all people are the same. One thing can make one person happy but it might not be true for the other person. For someone like us who was born with almost everything, fame, wealth, influence, education, career, maybe romantic love is something that we crave. I've been successful my whole life. I have it all but when it comes to love, I was always a failure that I thought maybe I should give up on it." Paul said, making Maverick look at the Alpha curiously and confusingly because he didn't know what he was actually trying to say.
"You said I might have already seen them... You might be right but I don't really have a clue..." Paul added with a bitter laugh before he carefully touched Maverick's hand.
"There's nothing in my life that I lack and I thought I was satisfied with what I have but after listening and spending my time with you, I realized there are so many things that I have yet to know about myself... I know I'm talking nonsense right now and you are right, but what I'm trying to say is that… I heard that the best way to move on from a failed love is to find someone else. We don't have to love each other, spending time like this would be enough." Paul said with a helpless smile, causing Maverick to blink still confused.
"Paul, what are you trying to say?"
"Maverick, let's start dating for real and spend more time together just like this," Paul conveyed. Meanwhile, Maverick was flabbergasted because he didn't know where this was coming from since it's obviously not because the Alpha liked him romantically and it's not like he liked him as well. It was too sudden! While he did think it was a shame he didn't fall in love with Paul instead, he didn't really think to actually date him. Such a thought never crossed his mind.
". . . " Maverick didn't reply and continued to stare at Paul. His mind was quickly filled with lots of thoughts but in the end, he sighed before he chuckled.
"Okay. It's not like I would lose anything. Please take care of me from now on then," Maverick said. He didn't really want to think much about this and Paul should be well aware that he'd most probably make him a rebound. Just as he previously thought before he invited Paul to take him on dates, even if it's just pretend, he wanted to experience what it felt like to be loved and cherished by someone who is not his brothers. Paul had already made him experience all of that as a dear friend and for him, it wouldn't be so selfish of him to experience a little bit more.
"But tell me the truth, what's the real reason you're suddenly offering me something like this," Maverick asked as he raised his eyebrows towards the Alpha because there was just no way feelings would develop between the two of them during the past months they've been together. Well... for him, it would have been difficult since he had someone he loved. As for Paul, he wasn't so sure but it does not look like the Alpha had that kind of feelings for him as well.
"*Sigh* You caught me... Truthfully, I just want Mom and Dad to feel a little bit more at ease. I'm their only child and so they worry about me a lot especially after Daniella. They knew that I tried confessing to Fyre and was rejected so they've been worrying sick about me, especially that I went away like this without telling them the reason. I just thought that if they knew I have you, they wouldn't worry too much." Paul confessed which made Maverick giggle. In the end, both of them are just using each other for their benefit.
"If it's like that then I wouldn't feel so bad for using you as a rebound..." Maverick conveyed and this time it was Paul's turn to laugh.
"Yeah, so feel at ease. You can tell me anytime you want to break up. But in the meantime, for as long as we are together, I'll treat you like my Queen." Paul said before bringing Maverick's hand close to his lips before kissing the back of it as he stared at the Omega kindly. At the same time, Maverick continued to giggle. He didn't know that things would end up like between them when he decided to trust the Alpha months ago but surprisingly, it felt so peaceful.
"I feel the same way."
