Chapter 3: Meeting the Marquess

The next morning William woke up finding a cold breakfast already served on the table next to his bed, so he could only assume that he woke up quite late.

During his sleep William found himself having strange dreams, some about a city not unlike the one he saw from the balcony the day before, others about two men that he could somehow recognize as his father and elder brother, as well as other places and faces that somehow felt familiar, almost as if the dreams were memories.

He felt as if a fog was slowly lifting over his clouded mind, giving him access to knowledge that he was sure was not his own, yet it felt as if it was a part of him.

It was one of the strangest sensations he had ever experienced in his life and it was simply fascinating.

While he was combing through these memories, the door to his bed chambers gently opened revealing Laura, who made her way inside.

"Good morning my lord, I hope you had a good night's sleep. How are you feeling?"Laura asked with a smile.

"I feel much better thank you. The headache has substantially subsided, as well as the feeling of weakness and the physical pain that I was feeling, well, pretty much everywhere in my body" answered William.

"I had brought breakfast this morning in case you woke up early; now that it has gone cold, I shall make a quick trip to the kitchen and get it heated up for you." Laura said as she moved to take the plate that contain two scrambled eggs, some bread, butter and a cup of maybe ale.

It did not take more than fifteen minutes for Laura to come back with William's now warm breakfast, yet it was more than enough for him to organize and review a good portion of the knowledge that he "remembered" out of the blue about this world and his situation.

"So basically, Laura was neither lying to me about where I am currently at nor this body's identity" William sighed "if I follow the usual fantasy novel trope, this poor bastard probably died when he fell and I somehow took over his body, making this one of lamest deaths ever." he thought, feeling a bit sorry for the kid.

"Yet it still does not explain how I got here, did I die? I swear to the gods if I had been taken out by truck Kun or some cheesy ass stereotypical trope I will lose my sh*t.'' William grumbled to himself.

Seeing the breakfast that Laura had deposited in front of him, William dug in while thinking further about the information he had so far.

"So this world is apparently still under-developed, more or less the equivalent of earth's middle ages though not quite the same, since apparently a long time ago there was magic in this world. It could be just bullshit though; we had plenty of that as well if we were to believe earth's every ancient civilization, like ever"

In the middle of his breakfast, the door to his room opened once more interrupting his thoughts, from which entered a tall man that looked about 1.8 meters tall, with graying hair and a solid build, seeming to be in his mid-forties, wearing light armor and holding a wooden broad sword in his right arm.

"William, I see that you are finally awake, this is indeed good news, how are you feeling my boy" said the man with a bright smile on his face.

From William's new memories, this man was undoubtedly marquess Ulric as well as William's ''father''.

William tried to respond in a manner that would not make him seem too suspicious. " I am feeling just fine father, thank you for asking, I think in a day or two at the latest I should be back to perfect health"

" Well, that is something for the family doctor to decide once he examines your condition in a bit, what concerns me is what your personal maid informed me about yesterday, she said that you lost your memories, not even knowing where or who you are".

Ulric asked while looking at his son with some worry this time.

"Shit!! Well I guess it is time to bluff my way out of this situation, alright time to bring my A-game, operation ''prevent shit from hitting the fan'' is a go'' thought Williams before answering.

" Yes father, that is true, yesterday after waking up I had an intense headache and was quite confused, I think my head injury was quite serious to affect even my memories. Though all is fine now, after a good night's sleep the headache has subsided substantially and my memories came back just as quickly as the pain diminished. So there is nothing to worry about. By the way, where is Marec?"

William said jovially while adding a question at the end to change the subject before his father asked any more inquiries. After all, some things were still blurry in his mind.

"Ah yes, I sent your brother yesterday to deal with some bandits that have been sighted in a village about a day and a half journey from Landow; you know how he is, always itching for a fight. I swear that boy loves nothing more than battle. He should be back in three or four days.''

Marquess Ulric said as he stood near William's bed, who could smell the sweat on his father and coupled with the armor and sword that he had, it was probable that the marquess was training his swordsmanship before he came to see him.

"I see where this brother of mine got his characteristics from, I guess the apple does not fall far from the tree" William thought to himself.

Ulric put his free hand on William's shoulder and continued " Son!! all you have to do is take good care of yourself, rest, eat well and regain your strength, if you need anything Laura would help you with it."

As the marquis began leaving, he suddenly stopped and turned around.

"Oh and before I forget, once you're back to full health I will have one of my personal guards teach you horse riding until it becomes second nature to you. No son of mine should ever fall and get hurt while horse riding unless they are in battle, don't ever scare me like that again young man. Laura!!! go get the doctor as soon as William finishes his meal and send him to my office once he is done."

Before Laura could even nod, the marquess had already turned around and left the room, leaving William just staring at the door speechless.

'' well that's just peachy, a day in this world and I have already been assigned homework. At least this father of mine cares about his son'' William thought to himself.

After finishing his breakfast, Laura did as she was told and fetched the doctor. The personal doctor of the Blackwell family was a well-dressed man in his late forties with a bald head, a short mustache and beard as well as wearing a monocle on his right eye named Gilbert.

Gilbert, as his job name implied served the house as its exclusive physician for decades and is one of the most trusted members of its inner circle.

After an extensive examination, Gilbert found nothing wrong with William's body and ended up attributing the temporary memory loss to the severe hit that William had suffered due to the fall.

This was good news, as it gave him an excuse to explain his ignorance about this world and the countless basic questions that he was bound to ask once he made a full recovery and started to move around the castle and the city.

William knew that he needed time to adapt and though he still couldn't quite completely come to terms with this new apparent reality of his, he has started to think about how he should proceed from here on out in this world he still knew little about, as well as how to survive and thrive.
