Chapter 41: Wendy's training

"Are you alright, Your Highness? If it's not a good time, we can postpone my training." Wendy asked when Roland arrived at the designated place behind his residence. She could see that his mind was somewhere else and that he looked a bit unfocused. Others might not notice it but Wendy could feel that something was troubling him.

"Hm? Yeah, don't worry about it. We can start your training right away." Her voice woke Roland out of his thoughts who then replied with a confident smile.

"Alright, you know you can always turn to me if there is anything troubling you. After all, I made a promise to Your Highness." Wendy replied with an unusual kind smile, accepting his answer and not trying to push it.

"I doubt I would be capable of discussing that "problem" with you" Roland muttered with an uncomfortable expression while looking to his right.

"What was that?" Wendy could only catch a few words but she could guess what he just said.

"Nothing, nothing...Let's just start with the training! Show me what you can do with your wind control" Roland said hurriedly and Wendy could only helplessly follow.

She has shown Roland some basic wind controls, creating wind currents all around herself and those types of things which had Roland thinking whether she knows only how to create wind currents and manipulate their directions.

"Alright, you can stop. I have seen enough, let's not deplete all your magic in a few minutes." Roland said while rubbing his chin and staring at Wendy with a thoughtful expression.

"So...What do you think?" She had no idea what to ask since it was still a bit absurd that a male was trying to teach her how to use her magic, even if it was a sole male who knew how to use magic.

"Um...If I wanted to be kind, I would say not bad, however, I guess I should be honest here...You practically only know how to create wind currents and direct them. If I were to create tiers of my ideas on how to use your magic, it would be at the lowest tier, basics of the basics." Roland said with an uncertain expression since he didn't want to hurt Wendy's feelings and pride. However, on contrary to his expectations, Wendy actually faintly smiled. Although it was a slightly sad smile, the determination in her eyes only grew stronger.

'I know that there are some limitations set on witches' powers but Anna has shown that those limitations can be broken. Her flames were already hotter than normal flames however her green flames now are even hotter but also can be of room temperature. It's as if one was being trapped inside a room and he had to break through a door to get access to the second room. The more doors he would break through, the more limitations would disappear.' Roland thought that Wendy most likely will be unable to learn most of his ideas but he had to start somewhere.

"That's a bit cruel to hear but if you think it's that bad, it just shows how much more I can improve." Wendy said with a confident smile.

"That's the spirit! I will make a Wind Goddess out of you, you can count on it!" Roland said jokingly and showed her a thumb up with an encouraging smile.

"W-Wind Goddess?!" Wendy muttered while playing with the strand of her hair and faintly blushing, visibly embarrassed by the idea of anyone calling her that way.

"Let's start with something more simple. Instead of generating vast wind currents, just try to use a fraction of your magic and send a small wind current in front of you." Roland said and Wendy tried to do so and she easily succeed but not in the way Roland intended.

'The wind current is still too large, it only became weaker, enough to push person a little.'

"Hmm, I didn't mean it that way however it seems like your idea of using wind is practically pushing so it's understandable that you would only make it weaker without touching the entire idea behind it. Let's try it in a different way, imagine that your hand is blade and your arm is hilt, swing your hand and release a fraction of your magic with the intention to cut something, not push it." Roland said, demonstrating what she should do by chopping the air in front of him with his right hand.

Wendy nodded her head and tried to do the thing Roland told her but her first try was a failure. Then the second, third, and twentieth try came with the same result.

By now, she was getting a bit distressed, however, she wanted to keep trying. She wasn't even sure whether she is capable of doing such a thing.

At least thanks to the amount of magic she was using each try, it was possible for her to keep at it for even several hours. Thankfully, it took only around half an hour before Roland felt like she succeeded.

"Try it again in front of this tree now." Roland pointed at the tree next to them and Wendy nodded, approaching the tree before swinging her hand.

A momentarily sharp sound was produced and a small cut appeared on the tree before the wind dispersed into all sides.

"Nice, good job!" Roland said and brought his hand high, waiting for Wendy to give him a high five.

Wendy only looked at his hand with a confused expression and tilted head, not sure what she should do.

Roland nodded towards her hand and Wendy understood what he wanted her to do but that didn't clean up her confusion. Still, she brought her hand high just like Roland but didn't slap his palm so Roland did it in her stead which slightly surprised her.

"It's just a gesture of celebration between friends...No one is around here so want to try it again? This time you hit too." Roland explained when he noticed her confused expression but upon hearing his explanation, an uncertain expression appeared on her face.

"Is this really fine? To practically hit a prince..." Wendy asked.

"Don't leave me hanging like before" Roland said and raised his arm.

At first, she looked a bit unsure but she decided to go along with it, she closed her eyes and raised her arm, slapping Roland's palm maybe with a bit more strength than she intended which caused her to open her eyes in panic but when she saw Roland grinning at her, she quickly calmed down and started giggling.

"Eh? What is it?" Roland asked in a confused tone.

"I apologize for saying this, but Your Highness is really a strange person!" Wendy said amidst her giggling.

"If you have time to giggle at my account, you must have more than enough magic to keep practicing! Maybe it was just a fluke before so keep at it!" Roland folded his arms and said with a stern expression but the tone of his voice betrayed his stern look.

"Yes, Your Highness!" She replied but kept giggling.

They kept practicing before returning for the dinner. Before Roland knew it, a few weeks passed and thanks to recruits and witches, the months of the demons passed without anyone dying. None of the citizens ever starved which greatly increased their trust in Roland, right now, the locals were practically blindly loyal to him.

In those weeks, everyone was quite busy. The bunkers were finished, the cannons had their carefully selected operating crew. Brian, Greyhound, and Carter were taught how to operate ships by Lightning. A new grand building was being built near Roland's residence, he was planning to use that building for witches in case more of them were to come here since his castle didn't have an indefinite number of spare rooms.

Roland obviously kept training with Wendy and also on his own. He even started sparring with Nightingale which was a great help to his progress, mainly when she could always turn invisible, making it challenging for him. As for the relationship between those two...they didn't move any further other than kissing a bit longer.

The moment the sun appeared and the months of the demons ended, Roland was standing on the wall, inspecting damage done to the wall.

[The months of the demons ended in your victory. You have successfully protected the people of Border Town]

[+ 1.000 Gold Coins, + new title 'Righteous Protector']

[Your Right to rule slightly increases with this victory]

'Ugh, what is that title?' Roland thought with a blank expression while every recruit around him was celebrating the victory.

Seeing the money he received for doing something he would do anyway, he decided to throw a big celebration for the entire Border Town which could also strengthen his position as their lord.

"Well done, my recruits! You have all fought well, however, now is not the time for heartbreaking speech. Go inform every single person in this town that we will hold a grand celebration at the town's square in the evening for this victory over the demonic beasts!" Roland shouted at recruits and everyone's eyes lit up before they started chanting 'long live your highness'

Since it was the first major victory since he arrived in this world, Roland was prepared to bleed and spend a lot of Gold Coins on meat and other delicacies for everyone to enjoy.
