Chapter 4: Chapter 4

It was early in the morning.

Thin fog surrounded the woods as it brought a cool, humid ambiance to the forest.

"Wow... I really am in a different world huh?"

Raven muttered to himself, as his vision flitted up to the ever rising celestial bodies in the sky.

But unlike Earth's sunrise, there are two celestial bodies peeking at the atmosphere.

The one on the left was as resplendant and fiery as the one from Earth, and the other one gave a cool piercing sensation akin to needles poking his skin.

The two were the complete opposite of each other, but the picturesque scene they painted upon the horizon was utterly breathtaking that you'll find their beauty perfectly complementing one another.

"So beautiful..."

He didn't have the chance to take a look at this scene yesterday, because the 'suns' have set. But now, he was amazed by it, feeling somewhat enchanted and lonely in this completely foreign world.

Growl~

Waking up from his stupor, his stomach was currently growling.

'First things first, I need food. I feel like this body hadn't eaten for a week, my goodness.'

A hungry army is worse than having none, so he definitely need something to fill his stomach first.

He jumped down from the thick branch of a tree he was currently lying in.

"Hmmm... let's see. There are many fruits and fungi growing everywhere in this forest, I wonder if it's edible though."

He stood up and found one to pick up.

Raven observed it for a few seconds then cuts it vertically.

"Looks like this one's good. I need to find more of these."

He searched the area for around thirty more minutes and gathered up all different types of fungi and fruits that he hypothesized as 'safe' for eating purposes.

'Looking at them now, I'm really not confident on eating these things up, I need to cook them up or something.'

All kinds of bizarre looking fruits and fungi were present. For his mental peace, he decided to cook them up first with the shell that he picked up before; it was like something from a coconut's shell but bigger and was colored white.

"Hmmm... a soup would be nice for a breakfast, and probably for lunch too."

Raven mumbled while munching on a blue, pebble-shaped berry.

He stood up and traced back his way to the river where he can find ample amounts of water for his soup.

***

Walking for almost an hour or so, he finally heard the rushing of waters.

"System, do you have anything like a map or something that I can use for this place..!?"

He almost lost his way. Some of the markings that he left last night were either missing or in a strange spot.

Water is a fundamental source of life, so he made sure that he can get back to the river if ever he needs something from it.

But looking at it now, it seems what he's done was a rather futile effort.

He's now praying that the markings he left back to locate his temporary camp were still intact.

{Please complete the emergency task first to access some information provided by the system.}

He almost popped a vein after hearing what the system said.

'That damn task again..!'

He swore to himself inwardly that he'll complete the task as fast as possible to make his life much more easier later.

"I wonder how long this river goes. It must be connected to some sort of town or village when it's this big. I can gather then much more robust information rather than fumbling here all by myself."

Calming himself down, he took out the makeshift flask he had prepared (an intact coconut shell thingy) as he scoop out water from the river.

Gulp

"Ahhh.. this water was.. holy shit..! How is this so good?!"

He continued gulping down large amounts of water to quench his thirst from walking around the place.

"Ahh.. my trip here at least wasn't in vain."

Raven also washed his face up, savoring this rare moment of relaxation.

When suddenly..

A bundle of thick clothes in a piece of wood was floating along the stream.

It was slowly falling downstream, hitting small rocks along its way, resulting in swaying and rocking of the wood.

He dumbfoundedly just watched it pass by him, until it hit a large rock in its path, threatening to flip down the entire thing over when..

"Waaahhhh! Waaahhhh!"

A loud crying sound came out of it.

Raven's mind went blank as he heard that particular sound.

'That sound was clearly from a baby..?!'

He snapped out of his daze and quickly jumped towards the river to save whatever that thing was.

'Is this how people were born in this damn world?! What the hell is wrong with this river then!?'

***

Still panting for his breath, Raven climbed backed up to the river bank. He lied down and put the thing wrapped on clothes to the ground.

"Hah.. hah.. for fuck's sake.. this world is.. trying to kill me for sure.."

The deep wounds on his body are opening up again due to his reckless behavior earlier.

Now that he thought about it, anger flared up within his eyes.

In novels, whenever someone transmigrated or was rebirthed, there will always be memories accompanying the body to make sure the main character can adapt instantly at the situation.

But him, with a soul of a true transmigrator, he didn't even have a clue on where he was, let alone taking revenge for the boy's murderer.

"Whoever the hell you are who made my body like this, I'll kill you and throw you in the middle of the ocean so if someone suddenly want to transmigrate into you, they'll drown immediately!"

He swore loudly, gritting his teeth as he tried to sit down.

"Now what, do I just leave this child here? Nah, let's just wait for a moment."

As an orphan himself, he cares about children the most in his previous life. Majority of his money was donated to charities for children. Innocent lives for him was precious, almost wishing to swap places with them and live peacefully in the dark; never knowing how dirty and murky the world was.

He started waiting, expecting somebody to show up. A relative of some sort that has a connection with the child.

A presence of a fellow person would also be nice, he also thought.

***

"What the..."

It was almost an hour though, and nobody was showing signs of showing up.

He then decided to check the conditions of the child.

He didn't touched or checked this thing for the past hour. He didn't want to be in some sort of trouble for carelessly touching foreign things.

It was eerily quiet though, totally not normal when you're with a kid.

He somehow started to worry.

Pulling down the thick bundle of clothes, a head full of golden hair peeked out from within.

Eyes prettier than the finest rubies, chubby cheeks with a hint of blush, and the hands so fair and plump clearly showing signs that the child was a healthy little brat.

"Oh. Uhhh, hello..?"

Raven looked dull for a moment as he stared at the baby who was also looking at him.

"Why aren't you crying? Are you by any means dead?"

He was mildly shocked, thinking that something was definitely wrong with this child because of how quiet it is all this time.

"What should we do then?"

He muttered under his breath, clearly conflicted on what to do next.

As an assassin, he was used to being alone. The life he chose was a path of loneliness, personal relationships were hindrance to his job so he was a little bit uncomfortable at the idea of caring for an another person.

"But I can't also just leave this child here either, dammit."

'Where the hell are your parents, huh!? I just started my life here in this alien planet and now I have to immediately babysit someone?! Are you fucking kidding me right now?' he angrily thought.

A minute or two has passed since the two started their staring contest and eventually, Raven came out as the loser.

The baby cheered happily as if knowing that it won the match.

"This damned kid..! Fine! Fuuu, really. It seems my first commission in this world was to babysit huh."

He mumbled while massaging his forehead, knowing how troublesome it is to take care of a child.

Sure, he loves children; or more precisely, the pureness within them.

But that doesn't mean he has experience dealing with one!

'Right, I'll pretend that this was a commission and I cannot fail.'

He murmured while performing some self-hypnotization.

Growl~

Growl~

When suddenly, both their stomachs rumbled harmoniously.

"This kid.."

He smiled wryly while looking at the child, thinking how did it even manage to survive from the raging river for god-knows how long, and why is the child there in the first place.

"This kid's plot armor is quite thick huh. What now, is it some kind of movie drama shit, parents abandoning the children, sending them somewhere safe while they duke it out with their enemies because of some shitty reason."

Raven said, making useless speculations in his head.

But what Raven said was somehow spot on though, funny he didn't have a prize for guessing it correctly; not that he knew he was right either.

"You know what.. I think my stay here won't be that boring at least."

He smiled as he looked at the baby, thinking that he at least won't be alone anymore.

"But first, let me get these fabrics as your parent's payments first."
