Chapter 2: Chapter 1 - Lost

It was as if he was lost in the oblivion. He couldn't hear anything. He couldn't see anything. He couldn't feel anything. No, not everything. He could only feel fear now. The fear of nothingness. The fear of the void. The fear of being alone in this vast world. While he was busy, scared of finding nothing, he didn't notice the something in his hand.

It took a while for him to adjust to his surroundings. Now he could see that it was dark everywhere. But he could see small dots of light somewhere far away. It was as if he was floating in space. It was awfully quiet. He opened his mouth to speak but couldn't hear a thing. Silence is spooky.

Now that he started paying attention, he could see that his hand was gripping something. Another hand. He could feel the warmth in his hand now. That warmth now slowly reached his heart in the form of relief. The relief that he was not alone.

That was all the energy he had. He felt really tired all of a sudden. He started losing consciousness and felt that hand slipping away. He tried to hold on to that hand with all his might. He couldn't, at any cost, lose it. Was it because he would be all alone? No. It was something else that made him want to keep it safe.

He couldn't fight it for a long time. He gave in at last. It was like getting in bed after a long day.

"Are you fine son?"

Someone was shaking his shoulder really hard. He felt irritated, maybe he wanted to sleep for some more time. But they were persistent.

He slowly attempted to open his eyes. But he closed as soon as he opened because he couldn't handle the brightness. He automatically started rubbing his forehead to ease the pain.

"Come here!! Sit "

He felt someone was pulling by his hand and made him sit somewhere.

He relaxed a little and opened his eyes. He waited a little to adjust and he could finally see. There was a lady looking at him with concern. He was sitting on a bench. And it was day time. Wasn't he sleeping?

"Are you fine?", the lady asked again.

"I am fine."

He slowly asked, "What happened to me?"

"You were standing still for a long time with your eyes closed. So I came outside to see if something was wrong", she said. "Do you need anything?"

He replied to the kind lady that he didn't need anything and he would rest a bit here before leaving. She smiled and left. He saw her entering a store. It was a bookstore.

He slowly started watching what was around. There were so many other shops.

And so many people walking in and out.

It was a busy path.

Maybe because it's morning and everyone's leaving for their work.

It was noisy behind. So he turned back to see so many vehicles on the road.

He felt weird watching other people rushing and that he was the only one sitting.

It took a while for him to come to the actual question. What was he doing here?

He felt like he was sleeping and woke up after a long dream.

He tried to recall what he was doing before, what he was supposed to do or where he intended to go. But he couldn't recall a single thing. Not even a single thing. He was lost. He didn't even remember his name.

It was frustrating.

That one dream which you had and were thinking about just then. But one second later it's gone. No matter what you try, you can't remember. He knew everything just then but right now nothing. 'What am I supposed to do?'

He was panicking now. He couldn't handle this anxiety and felt difficulty in breathing. He covered his face with his hands and attempted to take slow breaths.

After some time, he was able to breathe properly.

He had a gut feeling there was something he was supposed to do, which unfortunately he couldn't remember. He couldn't waste more time here. He knew if he didn't move now he wouldn't get the chance to know what to do or where to go.

But it was getting difficult for him to concentrate. He was not able to think properly. There were so many thoughts in his mind which were like 'Think about me' 'No! Think about me' which was driving him nuts.

He couldn't stop the anxiety of not knowing anything.

He firmly decided to ignore it for now, which was not entirely possible.

As he looked at people walking in front of him, he thought of which way he was walking. Was it left or right?

'Would it be weird to ask that lady for this?', he pondered. He put his chin on his hand and narrowed his eyes, ignoring the mind's chatter.

He looked at his wrist watch and it was eight in the morning. He started noticing what he was wearing or carrying.

It was a white shirt with checkered pants. He even had a tie. Pants were so striking. 'It's a uniform I hope?'

He was wearing a uniform. It was morning. He also had a bag. Bingo! He was definitely going to school. Now he just had to check for schools with this uniform.

He felt his nerves calming down a little bit with relief. He was not entirely lost.

He started checking what else he was carrying quickly.

First! His pockets.

A handkerchief and a wallet.

There was some money and a photo inside the wallet. It was of a man, woman and child. 'Is it me and my parents?', he thought. He scoffed. He didn't even know what he looked like.

Next! His bag.

There were books and other things which were not important now. 'Don't I have any ID?'

He was hesitating to search for it. He couldn't afford to do that but this weird feeling was eating him. He managed to evade thinking negatively for some time but he wasn't able to anymore.

He was scared of the sea of memories. The waves kept coming towards him. When he took the first step towards the wave, he found that photo. He ignored the overwhelming feeling that time but couldn't now. They were, supposedly, the most important people in his life and he didn't feel anything. Nothing. Wasn't he supposed to feel at least a little bit of familiarity?

He was now terrified of what was waiting for him at the bottom of the sea. So he was now walking backwards, away from the waves.

What if he couldn't swim through it? What if he drowned and got stuck at the bottom?

He was in a daze thinking of the worst possible things that could happen. But he snapped out of it when he saw another person wearing the same type of uniform, walking in front of him.

There was no need for him check for schools with same uniform. He just had to find another person with the same, which he found now. He put all these thoughts at the back of his mind and got up. He grabbed his bag and went towards that person.

CREATORS' THOUGHTS
mai_grit mai_grit

I wanted to explain properly how lost he was feeling. Please let me know in the comments whether it lacked something or I managed to do it! :D I recently read TFIOS which I was putting off because it's a tragedy. But when I started it, I couldn't stop. When I was writing about him being lost in void, I could only think about Gus' fear of oblivion.

Okay now I'm crying to sleep. Good Night (ಥ﹏ಥ)
