Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Awakening

Simon woke up to the loud argument between two Chinese women beside his bed.

"They were just playing. You really should not be taking this so seriously," retorted the older-looking lady, who had her arms crossed over her flamboyantly designed qipao as the younger woman stared daggers at her.

"Your grandson put my son in a chokehold! That is not 'playing'! That is attempted murder!"

The fuming lady was this magical Simon's mother, Jane. A stunning woman in her late 20s, she had her jet-black hair tied in a high ponytail and had her right hand extremely close to her wand holster. While magical Simon's mind did not seem to have memorized all the names of his mother's seven other siblings, he certainly had learned the name of the scowling older witch. Xiao was the oldest of Jane's siblings and magical Simon's most hated aunt. Simon gulped as the feelings of disgust and hatred from magical Simon's memories spread throughout his body.

Jane Yang, or known as Jian to her prominent Chinese wizarding family, was not too close with her elder siblings. This was something even magical 3-year-old Simon was able to register during the few months his family had resided in the ancestral manor. That may be because Jane did not have the same mother as most of her elder siblings, or it may be because Jane went off to marry a muggle wizard from Hong Kong instead of marrying into another prominent Chinese wizarding family. Or also because Jane chose to become a Gringotts cursebreaker who predominantly lived in Wizarding Britain.

The previous mind inhabiting this body clearly had many theories already. And the reason why a 3-year-old was already trying to understand this enmity was because while many of Jane's older siblings simply kept a polite but respectful distance from Jane, Aunt Xiao seemed to genuinely dislike Jane and her family. She would mock Simon's father, Dirk Li (Li Duk-wai), for letting Simon and Sue run free and enjoy their childhood instead of teaching them the "old ways" and rituals of the Chinese wizarding world. She would start arguments with Jane over the most minor things such as how to set the dinner table. And she always kept her eyes on Simon and Sue like a hawk as if she expected the two children to burn down the ancestral manor.

Hence, it was surprising when Aunt Xiao's grandson, who was a year older than Simon, offered to "play" with him. Since his arrival, most of his cousins who did live or come to the manor tended to ignore Simon and his sister Sue. Of course, it turned out "play" meant trying out the magical martial arts moves said cousin just learned from his private tutor on Simon.

Simon wondered if the 3-year-old who once inhabited this mind was killed by the "playful" chokehold. He wondered if the 3-year-old ever existed. He recalled a Sue Li in the Harry Potter series, a background Ravenclaw character in the Golden Trio's year, but never if she had an older brother.

Maybe this was just a dream, but the argument unravelling before him seemed too real to be true. He had so many questions. Was he dead? Was this a reincarnation? Why was he reincarnated in the Harry Potter world and as a boy with the same name as him?

Simon noticed the scholar in the painting rolling his eyes at what appeared to be a common occurrence in this manor. If he was going to remain in this world, Simon wished the First Wizarding War would end soon so he could be in the more familiar Wizarding Britain instead of facing these complicated Chinese Wizarding family politics.
