Chapter 55: New Bending
Azula was unfortunately highly against a warm up run and similar stretches. So I convinced her to do something that resembled Yoga. I wasn't like a expert on the stuff so i only knew a few things about it. Azula had complained about the idea that this was something Ty Lee would suggest and that when are we gonna get to fire bending.
It really burned me out a bit. However we got to where we needed in time. "Alrighty are you ready."
"I've been ready." I frowned, "Trust me you weren't, okay so in the air there is generally 4 main components that will alter fire. Your Blue fire is a somewhat bi-product of that. As Blue fire is when something something Oxygen interacts with fire."
"Something something?" "Do you really want to know the technical mumbo jumbo?" She shook her head, "No just give me what's useful." So I continued, "Helium is also a gaseous material that's in air. Though its far rare then Oxygen and so likely much harder to use. By having your bending interact with that gas you could produce a fire that freezes."
"A Freezing fire? How would that work?" I shrugged, "I never seen it personally, but I do know it works." "So then I'm guessing your method doesn't actually use this Helium?" I nodded, "Indeed, instead its sort of the reverse if fire bending. and a combination of lightning redirection."
"Lightning redirection? Unbelievable." "Hey, I didn't come up with that, and I honestly am not even sure I could do it. It is something your Uncle had come up with using water bending techniques."
"Right, I guess he was once an accomplished bender. Except how does that relate to your..." She motioned for me to name the fire bending. "Let's just call it Song of Fire bending." She looked at me not understanding the reference. That was fine though the reference was mostly just for my own enjoyment. "I'm getting really tired of having to ask things."
"Okay fair, let me explain then. Cast a fire ball in your hand." I had formed my own ball of fire as well a normal red flame. "Done, now what?" "How does the heat feel from the fire?"
She rolled her eyes, "Hot like fire." I stared at her, "Har Har, Seriously focus on the heat and tell me when you can feel the difference from your fire to the surrounding temperature. I already got the strategy anyway so I'll show you the end result."
I took a few steps back from her and extinguished my flame in an instance as I breathed in. The air around me dropped and I was excited from the result. The fire I had expelled was a baby blue as it rolled across the ground. It left a trail of ice behind it due to it literally sapping the heat from the air.
"It actually worked!" The fire in her hand vanished as she gasped. "That actually worked! You caused it to freeze the ground." I nodded, "It is just a little frost not actual ice. I imagine this would actually freeze thing if you use it in a colder climate."
"I am still impress Orin, I thought you were just bullshitting. So my own blue flames really are affected by the air?" "Yup, though now that I saw that the fire was baby blue I am also convinced that emotion has something to do with it as well."
"Wow! Really? I never would've guessed! Its almost like 100s of years of that." "Yeah whatever, Science can't explain everything that is why monkeys believe in magic."
Azula looked at me like I was crazy, "I'll just go ahead and try the Song of fire bending." I giggled at the name and she could tell it was a joke of some kind she just didn't know how.
She made another fireball and begun her self-study of the heat. I honestly don't expect her to do this. Except if she does I can get her to create smoke bending. She does this later in life during the comics for Avatar, I just hoped this would lead her to create it sooner.
I had no idea how smoke bending worked or even conceive how it was created. Number 1 due to my own unfamiliarity with the comics and Number 2 my own lack of skill. I couldn't be proficient at everything after all. "Interesting..."
"What's up?" "You said that emotions might play a part right?" "I did..." I watched as her Blue fire begin to shift color. My eyes widened...
"It's not what you did, but I'd say I discovered something interesting." In her hand was a now a purple flame that slow begun changing to a pink "H-How? What? Wait!" I checked her notification and saw her current emotion. It proved what I really didn't want to be true. Emotions did influence your bending alas! I mimed a dramatic fall and Azula just looked at me like I was insane again.
"Are you okay?" "No, just accepting a truth I already knew..." "Well aren't you supposed to be doing something now?" I sighed, "Well now that we discovered you have the ability to literally freely do this. We need to discover what changes when your fire bending changes. As well as can you replicate the process. Such as why did it change to purple then to pink. What emotions were you feeling? What were you thinking about to cause the shift. Can other replicate the shift?"
"Um...Cool?" She had long since extinguished her fire, but she was still standing until now. She sat down onto the ground and crossed her legs. "How do we test that then? Your bending had changed to so does that have something to do with it?"
"Are you asking what I felt?" She covered her mouth and looked away. "I would never ask someone about how they feel. i don't need to know such trivial things..."
I rolled my eyes, "I'll tell you if you tell me what caused your fire to turn pink?" I had my guess, but it was better to hear it from her. "I have no idea! Pink is not my color anyway. Far too girly."
I raised an eyebrow, "What's wrong with pink? its one of my favorite colors." Her eyes widened and she back tracked surprisingly. "I mean its just not my color, like black! Yeah, never enjoyed those colors since my...Ty Lee and Mai had liked them."
"You can call them your friends, Azula." She looked down, "I don't think I can anymore..." She took a tonal shift that I wasn't prepared for, then she switched though. "Not like I ever considered anyone a friend any way though. Trust is for..." I pulled her down and laid her back while I got on top of her.
"What are you doing!?" I smiled, and produced a large glob of spit that trailed down from my mouth. "NO NO NO! GET OFF!" The drool fell on her face and she exploded into anger as I got up and ran away.
"YOU DARE SPIT ON ME! I WILL ROAST YOU ALIVE!" She chased after me in her rage. The fact that her psyche had went up though told me that I did the right thing. She needed to blow off steam from her sadness. Azula was already beginning to change, which was great. Except she wasn't ready to change an thus needed a distraction.
I just wish the distraction didn't include her throwing fire at me. "YOU WILL REGRET THIS ORIN!"
"I regret nothing and have no fear! So catch me if you can! HAHAHAHA!"
"YOU DISGUSTING IDIOT!"
