Chapter 4: Conscious seed of light

After finishing his 7th Rabbit quest in a row with nothing but a stick, Kane began hearing whispers about him.

Almost everyone spawning in the elf village used magic or ranged classes, so to see someone choose an Elf build yet go at the enemy with a melee weapon was a little strange.

Only a little though, the real reason he was getting weird looks was because of his constant teleporting (the 70 rabbits in a row didn't help either).

Because the Aport class spawns you off without any way to deal damage, and has high mana cost skills that seem relatively useless early game, hardly anyone was choosing it.

There are a few other things that should be known about the game however, some of you may be wondering what the deal with speed and so-on is, it's pretty simple. The larger you make your avatar, the more melee damage you'll deal by default and the slower you'll be, and vice-versa.

Stamina in the game is based around your real-life athletic abilities, but since there's no stat for it, you can't actually run out.

If you jog for a while in this game you'll start getting tired, but since there's no stat, as long as you have the mental fortitude to push through the feelings of fatigue you can run endlessly.

The more you push through, the higher the bar for feeling tired gets set, thus allowing you to slowly raise your stamina without dealing with extra stats.

Kane had picked up an item drop during his 6th quest (And several dozen Rabbit Pelts throughout), [Rabbit Ears], although Rabbit Ears says it raises your detection, there's no actual detection system in this game outside of certain items and abilities.

What it really means is that it further increase your senses. Which Kane was quite happy about.

"I think it's about time I get a change of scenery..." He said while stepping over the pile of vanishing corpses under his feet.

Using teleport he instantly made it about a fifth of the distance back to town, he couldn't wait to raise up this ability.

Although the only official death penalty is the random loss of an item, upon dying you respawn back in your 'hometown,' which in itself can easily be a punishment depending on how far you've traveled.

For a high-level Aporter however, Kane suspected this wouldn't be a very big issue.

Walking into town he smiled and waved at a passing player, the smile on his face vanishing when they high fived his hand.

Although Kane had buried his sense of shame and gotten more sociable after spending some time with Sun, nothing could have prepared him for that.

Approaching the quest board, he decided he was finally ready to take on a harder mission.

There were two that seemed appropriate, the first was hunting 10 Vine Boars for 200G, the second was hunting 5 Shadow Wolves for 600.

The wolves were a little weaker than the boars, however, they could perfectly blend into the surrounding shadows and did more damage.

While this would've been easy money for someone like Kane, he was after Xp, not gold. He figured he'd earn more if he focused on leveling up first before jumping straight into harder quests.

Selecting the quest to kill the Vine Boars, he could feel a light tug on his body, this was how the game helped impaired people find the quest area.

Acting shamelessly, he called out loudly to the people in the square. "Hey, any healers wanna help me kill some boars?"

Between the angry yell he gave when first logging in, the 70 rabbit killing spree, the constant teleporting, and everything else that was strange about him, everyone in the Elven spawn area knew who Kane was.

"Oh, sounds like fun, mind if we join?" Kane heard a man's footsteps approaching him, with two others turning to follow.

"I can't, my work starts in like 15 minutes, sorry guys." One of the three said apologetically, logging off as the leader of the group shooed him away jokingly.

"So you're that crazy aporter we've been hearing about? I'm Reaper, this is Jol." He said while pointing back at his buddy, who gave a short wave

Kane stuck his hand out, thankfully being met with a handshake instead of another high five. "Nice meeting you, I'm Kane, level 6 Aporter, totally blind!"

"Welp, this oughta be an interesting day," Jol mumbled from the back. Reaper patted my shoulder, "He means it in a good way, I swear."

Kane chuckled, "No offense taken man." He made a point to quickly check their levels before deciding if he should quest with them.

Reaper was a level 9 mage, while Jol was a level 7 healer. They should be pretty helpful.

Deciding it was still too early in the game to be suspicious of everyone he meets, Kane smiled at them, "Shall we get going then?"

-----------

A few minutes later they arrived at the boars' breeding ground.

The boars were much more dangerous than the rabbits. Although they were only slightly bigger and a bit slower, they had better defense and two large tusks. And when you hit one, the other boars would rush out to defend it.

He could hear one on the other side of a tree. Kane had already spent 600 of his gold on a new chest plate and an actual sword, so he felt confident approaching these beasts.

Letting the information rush to his head, he checked the boar's stats.

[Vine Boar: Melee | Lvl 5 | 50/50 Hp | 13 Def ]

He whispered to Reaper, "I'm going to go draw it out, I want you to ready whatever spell you plan on using." Reaper nodded silently.

In the blink of an eye, Kane teleported behind the tree and stabbed at the boar's... area, making it violently jump out from behind the tree, being hit by Reaper's fireball shortly after, doing an extra 18 damage. Thankfully magic attacks ignore half of enemy armor.

Kane teleported back out to the side of the boar and slashed it twice before it could react.

[Vine Boar: 11/50 Hp]

With the now flaming boar's attention caught between the two of us, it couldn't figure out how to react and began running away.

Before it could fully leave my range I slashed it an extra time. It's health reaching 4 points.

Kane decided he wouldn't waste any mana running after it, 'the fire damage should kill it pretty quickly,' he thought.

And in about 10 seconds the boar dropped to the ground and squealed, thankfully there weren't any other boars nearby.

"I have a proposition to make!" Kane shot up from his sitting position.

"Sure, shoot." Reaper flashed a grin.

"This class doesn't have any attack skills in this rank, so unless I get help in fights like this, it'll take me forever to get stronger. But splitting the Xp between 2 people is also going to majorly slow down my progress, so I have an idea."

Reaper was trying hard to think of what Kane might be about to suggest, while Jol just looked at him with a raised eye-brow.

"My hearing is incredible, so, you guys help me battle these boars and give me 100% of the Xp until I'm level 10, and in return, I'll help you guys grind out the Shadow Wolf quest for a time equal to what it takes me to reach level 10. How bout it?"

Reaper looked at him with a stupefied expression, "That's ridic... wait gimme a second, I'm not really the brains here."

Reaper walked over to Jol and they began whispering to each other. "Is it ridiculous?" Reaper asked with concern. Jol glanced over at Kane before checking his status panel.

Jol whispered back, "Magic equipment is expensive, and that quest pays a lot, if his hearing is as great as we think this could be very beneficial. Let's test him."

Jol looked got up and walked over to him, "Repeat everything I just said and we have a deal."

"What? Sorry, I wasn't listening, could you repeat what you were saying over there?"

"..."

"Fine, fine. The quest pays a lot and equipment is expensive, so my hearing would help you guys out a lot if it's as good as I claim." Jol nodded in approval.

As Kane went to shake hands with Jol, Reaper bounced over and high-fived him, making Kane's eyebrow twitch in annoyance.

Kane really didn't hear what Jol was saying, he was telling the truth when he said he wasn't paying attention. He just had to guess using context clues.

Reaper cheerfully wrapped his arm around Kane's shoulder, "Let's get hunting then!"

Kane pumped his fist into the air, "Time to exterminate another species!"

Jol sighed as Reaper pumped his fist into the air in unison, "Aye aye captain."

And so they walked further into the woods, ready to spend the rest of the day hunting.
