Chapter 22: Chapter 22 - A Logical Creature
Well, that's different, I thought, looking down at the weird tentacle creature squirming around in my hand. I was a fan of Parasyte and the benefits Migi would give me would be very good but how exactly did I accomplish that. Did I just command him to infect my arm?
I tried it and to my surprise, he, or it, I suppose did. One second it was wiggling around in my right hand and the next thing I knew it had entered through my palm and began crawling up to the middle of my forearm. It stopped and then seemed to sink deeper into the limb. To my surprise I could only feel a mild tingling then nothing.
"Ermm, Migi?"
I let out a breath as my hand suddenly changed and morphed into the familiar shape of Migi. He looked exactly the same as he did in the show, from the blank expression to the human-like mouth and eyes. I smiled as he turned his gaze to me.
"Hello, Creator," He said in that emotionless voice. "I am Migi, construct of the system and now your summon."
I chuckled. Yep, this way definitely Migi. "It's good to have you aboard Migi."
I meant it as well. I had attack force and defense force, but with Migi by my side and the fact that he could level up and the fact that I would eventually unlock a way to upgrade him. Well, you can see why I was so happy. However, I did have few questions.
"Migi are from the end of the show or the start?"
"My personality and memories correlate to me being from the end of the animated show, which you know as Parasyte The Maxim."
I frowned at that." You know you from an anime and you don't care?"
I'd asked Leone and a few of the others they'd respond with the same thing. It didn't matter and as long as they could remain with me they would be happy.
Migi flowed up to my face before he spoke. "I am happy to be by your side even if I am aware that it is because of the system, but that in of itself should not matter to you or to me as I am a construct of the system created to serve you. A living tool that does not function correctly would be a poor and defective tool."
That's cold, yet logical and I can't really disagree with it, I thought, though I don't see them just as tools no matter what they are.
"Ermm... Your majesty?"
Migu vanished and I turned back to see one of the maids poking their head in. "Your meals are ready and Lord Richard and Lady Susana wish to speak to you."
I nodded. "Prepare some clothes, I'll be out in a minute."
She nodded, and I let out a sigh of relief. The last thing I needed was for Migi to be seen, at least not until my position as king was firm and not at risk. If the maids were anything like they were in movies and novels then gossip would surely abound.
"Do you require any assistance in bathing?"
Migi sounded and I looked down to see a mouth at the side of my hand. I wondered what would happen if I sent him to storage even as I shook my head. Would my mind just return to normal? I did so then inspected my hand. It looked completely normal and I didn't feel any different. I summoned him back and decided internally that I would keep Migi by my side at all times. Not only was he hard to detect but his logical mind and abilities would be very useful.
I stood and made my way out for the bath and into a side room for drying and dressing. A number of maids were waiting for me and I couldn't help but blush as they began drying me and clothing me. Could I clothe myself? yes, did I want a bunch of attractive maids to do it? yes, absolutely yes. I was a teenager full of hormones and in all honesty, it was only a matter of time before I pounced on one of my summons, if they were up for it. That led me to a thought I was uncomfortable with and I shook it away.
Once I was dressed I took a glance in the mirror and let out a pleased whistle. The white shirt and black embroidered vest went well together with the black and gold trousers and all-black shoes which looked freshly polished. The maids had styled my way so it was straight and not a single hair out of place. My eyes looked vibrant and meshed well with the darker colors.
I gave the maids a smile and thanked them which seemed to ease their nerves.
They led me to a large dining room where I summoned everyone but Rath since there was no way he was fitting in the room, though I did promise myself I would let him out to go hunting alter, which also reminded me that after the meeting I needed to plan some grinding. I hadn't really done all I could to level and now I would. I would complete the quest while leveling.
"Ahh that smells so good," Leone said, taking a seat and not bothering to wait. She filled a plate with steaming potatoes and different meats then began to ravenously eat pausing every now and then to take a drink of wine.
Domino snorted from beside her. "Calm down girl, The boss is king now I'm sure we can have all the delicious food we want, no need to rush."
"Gible! Gible."
I looked down just in time to see Gible hop into Lilah's lap and onto the table. He made a b-line for the meats and I didn't bother stopping him. There was plenty to go around.
As everyone began eating in earnest I was about to summon Migi to introduce him but stopped when a door opened and Richard stepped in, Susana by his side. He looked from me to my summons and I frowned at the obviously disgusted looks he threw at Leone and Gible. I'd give him a chance but if he did so again then there was going to be a problem.
He turned to me and must have noticed my cold gaze because he blushed in obvious embarrassment.
Susana for her part just looked interested, especially in Domino who she kept glancing at.
"Your majesty, all had been done," Richard said with a bow. "I have good and bad news."
"Start with the bad and make your way up to the good." My mothers had always taken bad news first and I had picked up the habit from her.
"Well, the entirety of the princess's army has disbanded which isn't surprising. The first prince's army has chosen to remain completely and over three-quarters of the second princess's have chosen the same, but the quarter that didn't disband will I'm afraid most likely either form some sort of mercenary company or start a large bandit group. As you ordered we've sent royal scouts out to track and gather information and have placed them on a rotation so we have constant updates coming in. As for the increased pay. The royal treasury remains full so we can afford to pay the soldiers that stayed extra though not for an extended period of time."
I nodded. It was better than I had hoped. I had over half the armies that had come to the capital and in all honesty, I didn't care that the princess army had disbanded. I didn't think I'd be able to trust them since I was the one who directly killed Adarra.
Susana stepped forwards. "Your majesty, I have contacted all the noble families in the capital and sent messages using our mages to all the vassals and influential families in Larra. The meeting today will have most of the influential nobility but we will be missing a few key figures which you will have to deal with them they arrive. The throne room has been prepped and in an hour we are set to begin."
I smiled as I took a sip of my wine, pleased that things seemed to be coming along so well. Though I also felt a small sense of dread. My mother had said never to become too relaxed because that's when life hit you with a right hook. Keep your guard up at all times and be prepared. Damn, I missed my mother.
I shook the sad thought away and turned back to Richard and Susana. "Good work, both of you. At the meeting, I will be confirming your positions as my highest advisors. Also, I want a list of the people you think most capable."
A smile formed on Susana's face and I shot her a hard look. "Do not use this to recommend you friends or allies who will not be capable. I want people who will be up to the tasks. The kingdom is about to enter a very fragile state and a single mistake could set a flame that could burn it all to the ground, understand?"
Susana's smile faded and she gave me a resolute nod. "Of course your majesty I will not fail you."
"See to it that you don't," I replied. "Not make sure all is prepared and when it is time come call me and we shall make out way there together. It will reaffirm your positions in the eye of the court and help you. Do not and I repeat do not make regret this. I am reasonable and fair to my allies, but gods help me I will move the earth and moons to end you if you betray me."
My voice was dead cold by the time I'd finished and the table had gone completely still and quiet. I glanced over at them and held back the smile that wanted to bloom as I saw all my summons even Gible and Kuriboh staring coldly at Richard and Susana.
Go team go, I thought.
They both nodded, and sweat beaded on Richard's brow as Susana shivered slightly.
"Go now, leave me and mine to eat in peace."
They excused themselves quickly after that, practically running to be the first out of the room.
We waited for a long moment before we all burst into laughter.
"Oh, man the look on her face," Leone laughed.
"Gible!"
"The man looked ready to shit himself," Zombiman said, taking along a pull of his cigarette.
"Hey don't smoke at the table!"
"You're over there it's not gonna do anything to you."
"Gible!"
I leaned back in my chair, smiling and feeling contentment as I watched my summons bicker. It was funny but I and my summons all knew that every word I'd said had been true.
