Chapter 9: I Choose Her...

" What do you mean by you have already found a bride better than the Princess of Silverland?" Killian asked him

" Because I have, you wanted me to get married to a woman from Silverland, does it matter if she's from a royal bloodline?"

" Well, it will make more sense if she was royal"

" And she's related to the Royal Family," Darren said.

" Who is she? " Killian asked, if she was related to the Royal Family as he said, it would not be much of a problem even if she was not a Princess.

" I won't tell until dad accepts. There are barely two months left for the treaty to expire so you guys should focus on the treaty, rather than who I want to marry" hearing this Killian just stared at him. " And besides King Norman's birthday is in a week, we are going to go there, correct? I would like a message to be passed, all the young females of the Royal Family should be present," he added

" All the young females as in?" Killian asked with furrowed brows

" I'm talking nieces, cousins, goddaughters"

Killian stared at him and when he said, goddaughter, his mind had immediately drifted to Adriele, but he just pushed the thought away, they had met with other godchildren of the King and Queen.

" Here, have this" Darren said to Killian handing him a small bottle he took from his pocket. Adriele had given him another bottle of the medication.

" Is this the medicine?" Killian asked as he took it from him.

" Yes, it is" he answered. Just then their mom was heading to the study to see the King when she saw them and halted.

" Who keeps giving you this medication? " Queen Delia asked

" You'll find out soon enough mom" was the answer, Darren gave her. Since the time she noticed the medicine Darren brought was very effective and helpful to Killian, It reminded her of when he just got sick and they thought he was going to die.

The Palace of Kleevland had never been so quiet and sad before. The terrible smell of death was all over the place as a child laid in bed motionless. Doctors had come and gone but no one could diagnose what was wrong with the child nor could revive him. He had been that way for about a week, beside him sat a woman with her head down on the bed, " mom" came a child's voice from across the room when she raised her head to look at him you could see the swell and dark circles on her eyes which indicates that she had been crying and not having enough sleep lately. But how could she? When her son, her first child laid on the bed looking lifeless. She could not accept what could happen next.

" Will brother Killian be okay?" the child asked

" Come over here," his mom called for him and he walked towards her

" Your brother will get through this okay, don't you worry," she said as she took the boy into her arms. After a while, there was a knock on the door, and in came a maid who said " Your Majesty they are here" hearing this the woman said some things to her son and left him with his brother, and she followed the maid. When they reached she saw her husband the Crown Prince talking to a young couple who had a little girl in their arms. As she approached them the couple stood up and greeted her by bowing their heads in respect.

" As you know, this is my wife, Delia, and Delia this is the woman they said could help him and she is here with her family," the King said pointing to the man and the child who looked like she was just two years old. Tears filled up the princess's eyes, this woman was her last hope, and if she could not find any fault nor treat her son she would go crazy waiting for the next horrible thing to happen. The woman who came saw her and immediately understood, so before they could say anything more she asked " Can I see him?" and the Princess hurriedly nodded and lead the way to the child's room. As the woman got there she felt her heart prick as she saw the state of the child, she had a child too and didn't know if she would still be sane if she saw her daughter like this. Going over she smiled at the other child in the room and went on to touch the boy on the bed.

" His Majesty told me he was ten and it has been a year since he got ill," the woman said

" Yes, what can be done to help my son I don't want to lose him" his mother sobbed

" For the kid to get like this in a year, I don't think there's much we can do concerning his life," hearing this, his mother's heart skipped a beat her son was going to die "But we could also extend his life a bit"

" What do you mean by extending his life and for how long?" his mother

asked with mixed feelings.

" He's a kid, he can live for at least ten more years if his medicine is taken frequently and the Princess gave her a sad smile. She didn't know if she was supposed to be sad that her son would eventually die or happy that his life will be extended a bit before he did.

" Take this, give it to him twice in a day, I had prepared this after I talked with your husband and the previous doctors," she said giving her a sachet with some sort of blue powder in it. The woman did some more tests and explained to his mother exactly what she should do. After a month her son, Killian could finally sit up straight, and though he could not walk she was happy to see him, his younger brother, and his father smiling again especially with the new life growing inside of her, joy had finally returned to the palace. She was so happy that her son was doing fine now and she found out about her pregnancy, with all the stress when he was still in bed, she could have killed an innocent child she didn't even know existed. The healer had told her she could not experience the normal pregnancy symptoms as she was tensed and suffered from malnutrition. With a little worry, she asked the healer about why he could not walk yet and she said it was perfectly normal, the kid had been unconscious for about four months, his bones were still weak and numb it would take time to recover and with that, she felt peace within her. A few years later the healer who had become her friend had died and she wept bitterly.

************

" Hello, mom" Darren disturbed her thoughts

" Yes, son"

" I've finally agreed to get married,"

" Really? Then why is your brother all grumpy," she asked with a smile

" He is, isn't he?" Darren teased

" He's not going to marry a Princess," Killian said as he glared at Darren

" Why?" she asked facing Darren

" Tattletale " Darren said, he was referring to Killian " Mom I've found the one I want to be with, she is from Silverland, and though she's not a blood relative she is still related to the Royal Family in a way. My mind is made up if it is not her then no marriage" Darren said sternly

" If she is from a noble family, I'm sure there can be a reasonable solution for it," she said to Killian

" Ok, mom, I'll try to talk to dad," Killian said to his mom " But I make no promises" he added

Darren's lips quirked up to form a grin ' not your responsibility right ' he thought to himself. And an even more wicked smile made its way to his lips.

After a lot of persuading, King Jerome finally agreed to Darren's wish. It was the day of the King's birthday which also was the day of the festival of dance, each year during this festival, dancers, and people from around the world would travel long distances to either perform, compete or watch the show. Both Kings were seated opposite each other with their Queens by their sides, the Princes and Princesses had a place for them, the elders, Dukes, many were present. Even Juliet Khan the second daughter of King Norman who was married to a Grand Duke was around.

Adriele was accompanied this time by Cynthia and Francis, she was also seated where the Princesses and Princes were as she was forced by Dennis and the Queen also urged her to, to the Queen Adriele was nothing short of a daughter to her. The festival began and different dancers made their way to the stage, some came in groups while others went solo. They cheered for them as they danced. All the while Adriele kept glancing at Darren briefly and one time when their gazes met Darren winked at her, she blushed furiously and looked away immediately. Some people had noticed them like Killian, Francis, Derick, and Cynthia. At last, the competition was over, votes were in, and the winner was a beautiful woman who won the hearts of everyone with the way she danced. She was given a reward of fifty gold coins and a chance to have dinner with the Royal Family tonight. While the commoners and low-class people ate from the big table which was outside with different varieties of food the royals and nobles went to have dinner at the Palace. Shortly after the meal, both Kings had passed on the message that all the ladies of marriageable age, related to the Royal Family in any way should come out and stand in the middle of the hall, the women had been preparing in a room in the palace. The Prince of Kleevland was going to choose his bride. They all came out, the older princesses, their cousins, and the Goddaughters. They were all covered with veils and Darren was supposed to choose the one he wanted. Not waiting for the signal his father was supposed to give him, he went on ahead and stood in front of both Kings bowed, and asked for permission, since he was already there why send him back? They thought to themselves, King Norman was the one who gave a nod to him indicating that he should continue. He walked up to the girls passing through one by one, Clarisse who knew it was Darren smiled from ear to ear as she saw him walk past the others, she was so sure he was going to choose her. Adriele on the other hand reluctantly stood there just for formalities, but she cursed inwardly when she found out it was the weird man who was choosing a bride but then she quickly pushed the thought away, there was no way she had a chance, there were princesses and noble ladies here whose parents were still breathing, why would he stoop to the level of an orphan?. As Darren walked searching for the one he was looking at he came closer to Clarisse and she was almost jumping for joy when he just passed her, her heart almost jumped out of her chest, her smile had fallen and if one could see her now, they'd think she was a widow mourning her husband. He continued and finally saw the dress he was looking for, he had taken note of the dress the girl wore before they headed for the Palace. Pulling her out of the crowd by the hand he looked up to the Kings and said " I choose her"!!!!.....
