Chapter 37: MY HUSBAND IS HERE.
Imperial City at 7th Heaven Restaurant in evening,
In a VIP open garden room, some people were sitting and chatting together. For the success of the 2nd artificial heart transplant , the Director had invited the whole surgical staff of this surgery for dinner as a congratulatory. A huge dining table was in the middle of garden. The open garden had really beautiful view. There was also a fountain in there. The garden was decorated with dim lights that made the night special and atmosphere pleasant.
Everyone was chatting and having drinks but there were two people who were quiet. Seren was the quiet one as she never had interest in such kind of parties but the another one who was quite was rather unexpected. Caleb who was always a social person and who used to chat a lot was quiet for some unknown reason.
The whole day Caleb didn't show anything on his face and pretended to be fine and not bothered by Seren's marriage thing but right now it seemed somewhat impossible. Caleb and Seren both were siting just beside each other but they both never said a word.
Caleb was losing his mind as he thought, ' She is just sitting beside me but I can't even look at her. I don't know how should I face her? Should I just pretend like nothing happened between us? Or should I just stay with her as a colleague? But it really hurts whenever I think of being a stranger to her'.
Everyone was having drinks but Seren just ordered some mango juice. Kevin was busy chatting with his other seniors and colleagues hence Seren was just quietly sipping her juice alone. She didn't mind the man sitting beside her.
After some time Caleb asked Seren as he stood up, " Dr. Seren if you don't mind may I have a chat with you somewhere else?".
Seren looked at him with blank eyes as she replied, " It's fine".
They both strode towards the fountain with their drinks where no one was. Seren said nonchalantly, " Please feel free to speak Dr. Caleb".
Caleb replied as he smiled , " Just call me Caleb. We are not in the hospital anymore. Also aren't we classmates from our medical college? Won't it sound weird if you call me Dr. Caleb everywhere?".
Seren didn't reply and just sipped her juice.
Caleb continued, " I heard that you got married Seren. Congratulations !".
Seren replied with her same composed self, " Yes. Thank you".
There was a moment of silence until Caleb again said, " I am sorry ".
Seren looked at him with confused eyes as she asked, " For what?".
Caleb felt like his heart was ripping apart by every passing moment but still he had to talk today otherwise it will just be closed in his heart forever.
Caleb breathed deeply as he replied, " I didn't know that you already had a husband and I still confessed my feelings for you. It must've made you uncomfortable. But I was really sincere about my love towards you. I have liked you for all these years since our medical college days. I know you must hate me for how I am behaving right now but I hope that you can forget what happened between us and just be friends like we were back in the days".
Seren replied looking at the man in front of her, " It's fine".
Caleb a little shocked by Seren's reply asked, " Huh?".
Seren said as she looked at him with her same expressionless face, " It's true that I've never thought about you that way Caleb but I don't hate you. It's not bad to like someone. I understand your feelings but I can't reciprocate them. So I hope that you can find someone who can love you back".
Seren and Caleb were practically friends in medical college days as they studied together. Caleb was always the first student who topped in complete university but later he became the second one as first one was Seren. Hence they both made a deal back then to study together and share their notes and just how they became friends. Normally if someone were to snatch your place then you'll revenge them but these two joined hands with each other. Well its true that brains was extraordinary works different. Later Caleb realized his feelings and confessed to Seren and so she tried to keep a distance from him since then. But Caleb never gave up and continued to court her all these years. After knowing that Seren was married, Caleb felt it awkward to be around Seren as he felt guilty for just thinking about his feelings and making Seren uncomfortable.
Caleb was feeling relieved after hearing Seren's reply. He said , " So are we still friends?".
Seren nodded her head and continued to sip her mango juice. Just then her phone rang. Caleb saw the name flashing on the screen, ' Quack'.
Seren picked up the call as she heard the man on other side, " Are you done wifey?".
Seren replied, " Probably".
Louis said, " Where are you? I'll come to find you".
Seren immediately rejected his offer, " No need. I'll come to you".
Seren knew that if Louis comes to find her then there again will be another day of gossips surrounding the cardiology department. She immediately disconnected the call and went towards the dinning table where everyone was and Caleb went to have chat with other colleagues.
She noticed that Director and Chief were both chatting until Director got up to take an important call. Seren strode towards Chief Dr. Richard Adams as he was her senior after Director.
She informed the Chief, " I'm sorry but I need to take my leave".
Chief smiled as he looked at Seren and replied, " It's fine you can go".
Seren asked, " About Director?". Seren wanted to leave after talking to Dr. Andrew Corden but as he was on phone so she couldn't. The another reason was that the Director had personally invited her so it might not look good if she just leaves without telling.
Chief assured her, " I'll talk to him".
Seren replied, " Then I'll take my leave".
Chief asked as he called out for Seren, " Are you going alone? Let someone drop you".
Seren replied, " It's fine Chief. My husband is here to pick me up".
Chief said as he smiled, " Fine then. Go safely".
Seren felt that there was something different about Chief today. He was unexpectedly good towards her. Chief even allowed Seren to go home early. Earlier Chief didn't like Seren too but after having an experience of her surgical skills as a doctor he was impressed. He also came to know from the director that Seren was the one who adopted that child and paid for his expenses. He felt like he had wronged her for no reason in the past. He realized that she was much more kind as a person at heart.
Seren walked out from the place as she went towards the parking lot of the restaurant. She had already messaged Kevin about her leave so that he wont worry for her. Caleb who was still at the VIP room chatting with his seniors noticed that Seren was nowhere to be seen. He rushed towards basement where he found Seren near the parking lot.
He strode towards her as he called out her name and Seren stopped as she looked at the man who was calling her.
Caleb asked, " Are you leaving?".
Seren replied, " Hmm".
Caleb said, " Let me drop you. Don't go alone".
Seren wanted to reject Caleb but she was sure that he would still insist hence she used Louis as a trait.
Seren replied, " My husband is here".
Caleb said, " Oh.... okay. Bye then".
Seren turned and walked towards a white Volkswagen. Caleb watched Seren sitting in the car as they car drove off from the place. Due to the dark night he was unable to see the man on the driver's seat.
