Chapter 2: Assassin of the Continental

"It's already been a year and a half since I came to this world," Bruce sighed looking at his stats.

Considering his more than a year of stay a level of only 10 might seem very low to some, but things weren't as easy even with his system.

The System was a gaming system through and through, but it didn't randomly pick up skills just because he tried it once.

For example, just throwing a couple of punches in the air wouldn't give you a boxing skill. You had to learn it properly either from a teacher or by yourself. And as long as you could understand the basics or the principle of it going down, only then the skill was formed.

Skills were technically a helping guide rather than being a complete cheat. Understanding the concept of the skill was important but once you had it done, it didn't take much longer to push the skill to its potential as long as you practiced hard enough.

The next different thing about skill function was that things had to be valid up to a certain degree for it to be a skill. You couldn't just wash dishes and expect a dishwashing skill.

His active skills were the result of his training in Ruska Roma under the Director. All his fighting techniques combined and formed Mixed Martial Arts skill, alongside high proficiency in everything weapon-related.

And with interrogation as one of his skills, he was becoming a decent assassin who was also good with recon missions. And served more purpose than just mindless slaughter.

The skill levels started from beginner then Intermediate, Advanced, Master and Legend.

With an Advanced level in most of his skills, he was close to any professional athlete or any assassins around, but upgrading them further than that seems to require more than just training.

Then came his passive skills, which he gained through quests and experience. These four skills were the only ones that the system had given him as rewards, as for the rest, he had to work hard for it.

The skill cold-blooded which he earned after his first kill gave him calmness and composure, no matter the situation.

The Charmer skill, he gained through a quest basically made him good-looking and pleasing to the eye in general. It was a bit of a decent skill, as with women the skill worked wonders and he could pretty much charm his way through with them as long as they were at a lower level than him.

But if they were at a higher level, or their will was stronger, the skill would become a bit useless.

Pain tolerance prevented him from not losing his mind in torture or slowing him down in a situation where he was injured by numbing his sense of feeling pain. A skill he gained through countless beatings when he was a beginner.

Multilingualism was a handy skill that gave him the ability to speak and understand any language. A skill he gained after he completed the quest of defeating every trainee.

The other passive ability of function of the system was Inventory, where he could put any item into a pocket dimension, though the size of it was limited with each level up the space increased by size a little by little. Currently, it was filled with a couple of pairs of special bulletproof suits and a shit load of weapons and ammo.

The concept of MP wasn't hard to grasp as whenever he used his skills, MP would be used.

For example, he could cook normally without using skills, and no matter how hard he tried, food would come out as average at best, but if he used his skill, the food he cooked will be a delicacy mixed in with some healing properties like in a video game.

And now after reaching level 10, a magic core has been established in his body and now he can use mana for what it's normally intended for, Magic skills. Though those skills would have to come in the form of rewards as magic wasn't a normal thing in this world for him to grab a skill book.

Maybe if he met the Ancient One, he could get some handy skills but currently it wasn't a possibility.

Stats wasn't difficult to understand either, strength referred to what it sounded like, raw power. Vitality referred to his healing and stamina, and Dexterity referred to measuring agility, balance, coordination, and reflexes.

Similarly, Intelligence was used to measure general intelligence and it also helped in increasing MP. And Wisdom helped with common sense, self-awareness, and increasing the recovery rate of MP.

Within the two years of his training his skills had risen up considerably well, but his level hadn't grown much.

But within six months of being in the continental, doing jobs here and there gave him enough quest to level up freely and as his credibility grew, quests with higher experience points and rewards came along. And now he was leveling up faster than ever before. Increasing his stats faster than before.

It also gave him the title of 'Assassin of the Continental' which increased all of his stats by 10%, which could be considered as the best perk of it all.

With level 10, he was in peak human condition as the gap from level 1 to 9 and 9 to 10 was completely different and large. To put it simply, he was strong as the strongest human in the world, he was equally fast as the fastest athlete you could think of, his recovery rate was thrice of a normal human, and so on.

Just comparing his stats, he was currently stronger than John Wick based on constitution alone, but despite his skills and strength, Bruce would likely come short-handed against Wick who had similar set of skills as him with a lot more experience than one could imagine.

So unless he mastered his skills and raised his stats, followed by some trump card fighting against monsters like Wick and winning would be a bit difficult, after all, the stories about John Wick around the continental and the underworld made him out to be a devil straight from hell.

Luckily, he was retired, and looking at the situation Bruce likely had to retire soon too. Continental was a great place to work at with quest popping here and there with every job but as a freelancer, it was a hard place to live in.

Bruce who had been upgraded with such a high-level job out of the blue was sure that it was meant to be a test, a test to finally determine his skill set.

Working under operatives as they called themselves was the best choice he had other than quitting, after all, people were surely focusing on him, and attention in this line of work was never a good sign.

It was either work with them or be hunted by them, neither of it was something he was fond of.
