Chapter 13: Chase

The governor waved his hands at Elsie's team, signaling them to walk over. In unison, Elsie walked over with her team and they took a bow.

He nodded his hand in satisfaction and waved his hand at his sentry, "Bestow the reward on them."

His sentry stepped towards Elsie and her team who were still in a bow and plopped a bag of gold each, in front of them. "My lord bestows these on each of you, as a reward for becoming the champion!"

Thank you, my lord!" They took a bow in unison before straightening their body. They picked up their gold bag and couldn't hide the smile on their faces.

The governor waved his hand at them but his gaze didn't leave Elsie, so was for his son too. "You may all leave now."

Elsie and her companions swiveled to leave but then she glimpsed a deep gaze filled with ill intent on her and she couldn't help but turn around to gaze in the direction that the ill gaze was coming from. However what her eyes saw was a woman with red hair and a smirk hung on her face, clad In a pristine white dress with a v-neckline.

"Oh no!" Elsie already knew what was going to transpire next and without squandering time, she swerved towards Olive and Zarin with an apprehensive face. "Guys we need to leave right now! right now!"

"Wh-why? the festival isn't over yet!" Olive chuckled with a raised eyebrow.

"We need to leave right now!" Elsie shoved them forward to get them moving but Zarin forcefully stopped. "Elsie, what is going on?"

"It's her!" Elsie bit her lips with the back of her teeth, as disquietude could be seen on her face.

"Her?..." Zarin knitted his brows together as he tried to comprehend what Elsie meant. It didn't take a moment before his eyes dilated as wide as a saucer "Wait...You mean her?"

"Yes her!"

"Shit... Common Olive, we have to leave right now!" Zarin shoved Olive and they sprinted out of the crowd which had everyone startled.

"Run!" Elsie screamed and they dashed out of the city market aiming for the woodland nearest to the municipality.

"Y'all gat an explanation to give me when we are done running!" Olive glared at them as resentment bubbled up within her. What was this? She had just won a competition and instead of resting, she's in a run!

Elsie ignored her and fled into the woods. Behind them chased eight men swathed in matching blue uniforms, they looked like royal guards.

Elsie who was the sluggishest in them was almost being caught up to. She was already apprehensive within her, thinking this was the end when suddenly a hand grabbed her and sprinted her forward with him, giving a huge gap between them and the men chasing after them.

After they had run for a little bit of time, Elsie accidentally fell down and painfully clutched her ankle, "Shit!"

"Are you alright!" Zarin squatted down to her and his eyes peeked at her ankle, "Oh no... You have a sprained ankle!"

"What? How are we to continue running now!" Olive grumbled in irritation. Those men will catch up to them anytime soon!

"You guys... should go I will be fine. We need to split up." Elsie gritted her teeth as she tried to fix the bone back into place.

"No! What if something happens to you?" Zarin shook his head in disapproval.

"We have to. Don't worry I will be fine." She nudged the bone once more and it finally went back into place which had her screaming in pain. "You guys need to leave now! We will meet back here tomorrow morning, alright."

"Alright, Take care of yourself!" Zarin nodded at her and dragged Olive along with him and sprinted away.

Elsie gritted her teeth and stood up on her feet. She couldn't help but yell internally, it was still painful even though the bone is back in place.

She dragged her injured leg along with her and tried as much as she can to move at a fast pace.

The sun was slowly setting and she was still trying to find a place to hide into. However, before she could even move again she heard their voices, "There she is!"

Elsie panicked immediately and unhesitantly ran as much as she could and without much thinking, she lunged into a hole she saw. But what she didn't know was that this was a hole set to catch a demon varmint. So the immediate she jumped in, a huge nail gored through her leg which made her grit her teeth and scream internally to the extent she felt her soul leaving her body.

Unbearable tears fell from her eyes as blood oozed out from her leg. When has such a thing happened to her! As a person who had an overprotective mum, she never experienced this kind of thing!

Footsteps sounded as the men sprinted past the hole she jumped into with some of them discussing, "I am hundred percent sure that I saw her."

"Then where is she? She is the one that our lady wants!"

"I have no idea! Let's keep looking, am sure she hasn't run that far."

Elsie held her breathe to prevent herself from being caught.

She did this for a few minutes before she finally breathed out a mouthful of air. Her heart couldn't cease beating rapidly.

With her bleeding leg, she pushed herself out of the hole and clutched her leg trying to stop the blood oozing out from it. She was still a 2nd level cultivator and for that, she couldn't heal as fast as a strong demon does.

"Get up, lets go," Zamiel knitted his brows.

"But my le..."

"Endure it, we need to leave right now!"

Elsie painfully dragged her leg and continued walking. It didn't take a long while before she spotted an old brownish house, "Oh God, a house!" She breathed a relieved breath and proceeded to walk towards the Old house.

Making it to the front of the house, Elsie gently knocked on the door, but no response came, she gave a second knock, still no response.

"Hmm...seems like no one is around," Elsie eyes the house with narrowed eyes, "Guess I will have to go in myself then."

With a slight turn of the doorknob, she opened the door and slipped her skinny body inside. However, the moment her body slipped into the house, the door slammed close by itself with a loud bang making her jolt in fear.

She shooked her head and took a deep breath when she saw it was just the door. Then she turned around and began to scrutinize the house.

There was a broken chair and a table beside the wall which had a small mirror hanging on it. Some candles were lit which gave brightness to the house.

"Hmm, I wonder who lives here," Elsie narrowed her eyes and proceeded to walk around the house. "Hello! Anyone in here!" She yelled but no response cane.

With knitted brows, she proceeded to make her way up the stairs she spotted. At the end of the stairs was a door standing right in front of her, pulling the doorknob, she slipped her body into the room, and turned around only to jolt back from what she saw.
