Chapter 8: The Useless Wand for the Gifted

Kenneth woke up early morning out of habit from being a boxer in his previous life and ran a few workout circuits to wake his body and mind up. Funnily enough, it was only now that he realised that his new body was at least 2 times as strong as he was when he was athlete at his peak. This made him incredible happy, because one of events that killed him on the inside was being forced to give up on his career as a boxer when he could have given more to it.

"Oh good, you are awake," Nagini said while coming into his room, "Exiting day ahead, isn't it? Let's have breakfast and get you that wand, then head to the ministry."

"Kay," Kenneth replied.

They went down stairs to have breakfast, then headed out. The Diagon Alley in the morning was not very packed. Some store owners were setting up their outside stalls and chatting with each other.

"Good day Nagini, oh my, who is this?" asked a woman outside Madam Primpernelle's beautifying potions store. The women had beautiful short brown hair that was slightly curled down to her shoulders with brown eyes, she was wearing a blue and white polka dotted dress that reached her knees and wore glasses, she looked like a well learned girl who loved books.

"Good morning, Alice, this is my husband, Jason Kenneth Webb. Dear, this is Alice Primpernelle, the owner of the beautifying potions store," introduced Nagini.

"Good day to you, Mrs. Primpernelle," greeted Kenneth.

"Good day, Mr. Webb, Nagini always said she was married whenever we tried to introduce her to other men, we all thought she was joking in order to avoid it, but it seems she was telling the truth," said Alice, "Nagini, you never said your husband is this handsome."

"Did I not? It must have slipped my mind, anyway, we are heading to Ollivander's, hubby here broke his wand and needs a replacement. See you later, Alice!" Nagini giggle happily as the parted ways.

After walking down, the alley road for a few minutes, they came in from of the shop called "Ollivanders", the shop building was grey in colour, the two shopping windows on the side was filled and covered with rectangular boxes, there was no doubt that they blocked all the natural light travelling into the building. The entry door had golden letters carved onto them, it said, "Ollivanders: Maker of Fine Wands since 382 B.C.", if side of the shop was just as Kenneth had guess, dark but lit with everlasting candles and wand boxes littered in every corner of the shop. There was an old man sitting behind the reception desk, he had white unkept hair and wore thick spectacles, and was roughly dressed. The old man was carving on wood and when he heard the door open, he looked up and said, "Ah Nagini, good morning to you, I remember when you first came by 6 years ago getting your first wand, 9½ inch, vine wood with a unicorn hair. You are taking good care of it I assume?"

"Good morning, Mr. Ollivanders. Yes, my wand is doing very well, polished it last night. This is my husband Jason Kenneth Webb, we are here to get him a wand, we went to the Baguettes Magiques de Cosme Acajor in France but we did not seem to find a suitable one for him. I hope you can help him," said Nagini.

"I'm sure we can find a wand for you. Now, Mr. Webb was it? What is your wand hand Mr. Webb," Mr. Ollivanders questioned.

"My right hand," replied Kenneth.

The old wand maker started measuring his arm, shoulder lengths. He even went in to measuring Kenneth's facial features and leg length. Mr. Ollivanders then went deeper into his shop and brought out a rectangular box saying, "11-inch, oak wood with a dragon heart string, let see if this wand picks you, Mr. Webb."

To everyone's surprise, the moment Kenneth touched the wand and channelled magic into it, the wand made some cracking sound and splintered before shattering. Kenneth looked awkwardly at the wand maker holding just the handle of the wand.

"Well, that was surprising, never have I seen such a drastic change in a wand, pity the wand was destroyed though. We wandmakers hate to see them break," said the wand maker.

"Sorry," replied Kenneth.

"No matter," he then went deeper into the shop before bringing another wand and said, "13-inch, vine wood with dual dragon heartstrings, Mr. Webb, if you please."

Again, the moment Kenneth channelled magic into it, it started cracking and splintering, this time Mr. Ollivanders was ready, he snatched the wand quickly out of Kenneth's hand as though he was a wand destroyer and his nemesis.

"No wonder you said you could not find a suitable wand in France, I know Cosme Acajor, and he is a fine wandmaker, you are a difficult customer, Mr. Webb." Said the old wand maker.

"Sorry," apologised Kenneth again.

"Never mind, it's not your fault actually, you were born with very potent magic in you Mr. Webb. The magic in you overloads the wand to the point it is unable to handle your power, therefore exploding. I'm curious, what kind of a wand did you use before?" asked Mr. Ollivanders.

"I'm not sure what it was make out of, it was a wand that was given to me, the only feature that was distinguishable was that it was made from a portion of wood and metal," lied Kenneth, since the wooden wand keep exploding, he just went with a reinforced wand idea.

"As I suspected, come with me, Mr. Webb, Nagini," then he led them to back of his store and went upstairs. The next floor was even a bigger mess that the ground floor, Mr. Ollivanders said, "We wand makers hate to destroy our own wands, so we store everything we ever made, in case there is a suitable candidate later on. My family did not always make wands just with unicorn hair, dragon heartstrings and phoenix feathers, my forefathers did experiment with different wands before they came to a conclusion that dragon, unicorn and the phoenix was the best material to use for wand cores. Ah here we are." The wand maker pulled out an old looking box and said, "This wand was made by my great grandfather, black wood and silver body, 12 inches and it has a dragon heartstring, unicorn hair, phoenix feather and few other materials from other magical creatures. Mr. Webb, if you please."

The wand was made of black wood with two silver veins twisting and branching out from the base of the handle. This time when Kenneth touched the wand, he felt a warm flow going through him, while there was flash of blue light coming from the wand that turned into hundreds of butterflies before disappearing.

"Ah, as expected, "special" wand for a special customer," said the wand maker.

"How come its special, Mr. Ollivanders? Can I have one too?" asked Nagini.

"It's only special to your husband, Nagini. You see, the reason we only make a wand with a single core is because it displays the best results. Your husband's wand has multiple cores in it, which is not good because the cores interfere with each other, to put it simply, it only works because of your husband's extraordinary potent magic. This wand is actually useless, that's why I said it was special, its actually limiting his magical talent, I don't even know if I should charge you money for this wand," then he looked at Kenneth and said, "Mr. Webb, give me some time and I'll make a wand that is better suited to you."

"No, I like this wand," commented Kenneth, he knew that thanks to the blue orb and the alicorn rune, the magic in him was very potent, it was only going to get stronger, he was worried he would gain to much attention by displaying extraordinary affinity with magic, but this wand solved his problem by acting as a valve for his powers, handicapping him. it was a useless wand to others but it was perfect for him. Besides if he wanted to go all out, did he really need a wand? Kenneth could cast magic windlessly and wordlessly already, even though they were just his innate magical talents.

Kenneth also bought a wand holster that went under his left armpit with its straps extending to the back of both his shoulders, something similar to the pistol holsters the police wore underneath their jackets.

Mr. Ollivanders insisted that they pay only 50 sickles for the "special" wand and apologised for not having a wand that complimented Kenneth's magical talent. After they left the wand shop, Nagini looked up and down at Kenneth wearing his holsters and said excitedly, "this look suits you! Anyway, now the most anticipated part of today, let's go get that marriage certificate!"

Kenneth thought speechlessly, "So me registering into the legal system is less important?"
