Chapter 2: Chapter 2

At the end of his first, and only, relationship some three years ago, Russell decided he didn’t want to see the same doctor at the same clinic as his ex. That doctor had been a touch gay-unfriendly anyway. He went online and did a search for gay doctors who were taking new patients. He found Peter and booked an appointment. He wondered, at their first meeting, if he would be capable of not flirting endlessly with the guy. Peter was tall. Russell measured at six feet and when he stood on the scale for his height and weight, he was eye to gorgeous blue eye with his new doctor. That would put him at almost six two. They were about the same age and the few times he saw him without his lab coat, he knew Peter was solid with muscle. He was tempted to go for his annual physical fifty-two times a year. He figured, somewhere in his subconscious mind, someone like Peter would have a partner securely locked in his bedroom.

He sighed, shook hands with the doctor, and reluctantly departed in good health, pending the blood test results. On the bright side, Peter did not discuss results over the phone, so another appointment was coming. He pondered bringing flowers. Before he left, he went to the receptionist. Bernice Jones was an older woman with greying hair and an enormous bosom. He wondered how she ever stood straight, carrying those babies around all the time.

“Bernice, the doctor is making me pee in a bottle. I don’t suppose you have one that’s large enough to hold a bit more than a drop and wide enough so I don’t get my fingers wet?”

She laughed and put the specimen jar on the counter. “Last time you were here you bragged that you could pee an arc higher than your head. I thought you wanted a challenge. If this isn’t big enough, I can get a bucket from the cleaner’s closet.” She smiled. “You sure bring cheer to the office when you’re here, darling. I’m always glad to see you.”

Russell smiled. “You’re good people. This is the friendliest place I’d ever want to be if I was sick. Pity doc Peter’s got himself a partner, though. I kind of like the guy. And—” He glanced around discreetly and lowered his voice. “He’s had his way with me in more ways than I ever knew was possible.”

Bernice looked at him solemnly for a moment before she burst into raucous laughter. Others in the waiting room looked over, puzzled. She eventually managed to compose herself. “Oh sweetheart, our Dr. Wilson only has his work for a ‘partner.’ He worked hard to build his practice and he never took the time to socialize. Not that I approve, mind you. He needs a good person in his life to balance it out.” She winked at Russell. “Probably someone like you.”

Russell took the vial, peed, and left the goods in the cabinet, as the instruction sheet directed, even though he skipped the first few steps. He had no intention of wiping his sensitive part with an alcohol swab, and he only fully retracted in the most intimate of occasions, and then only with the right date.

He waved at Bernice on his way out. He noticed the waiting room was filled with an assortment of guys. Hunky bears, skinny twinks, gorgeous model-types, and wondered if someone like him, who was none of the above, would ever appeal to someone as beautiful as Peter.

At the end of the clinic hours it was typical for Peter, his partner Trevor Mills, and the clinic nurse Helen Williams, to meet and discuss the day’s cases. Bernice was asked to sit in when she was available.

“Mr. Bronfsky thinks he needs a stronger dose of erectile dysfunction medication, claiming he can only get it up three or four times a day now. The man is almost seventy. I couldn’t do that when I was twenty.” Trevor frowned. “I was tempted to welcome him to the real world.”

“Perhaps he simply needs to meet the right woman?” Bernice wondered aloud. She blushed when the other three looked at her with admiration and astonishment.

Peter grinned. “Maybe we can pimp you out, professionally, of course. It would reassure him, and probably scratch an itch of yours, as well, just saying.”

Bernice wasn’t about to let that pass unchallenged. “And, just saying, why aren’t you actively pursuing a certain patient, who leaves this place after every visit feeling as though he got lucky and was walking on air?”

Trevor and Helen both looked at him. Not questioning, but with a knowing look.

“Russell is a very good looking man, and he obviously has the hots for you. And that’s a professional observation, doctor.” Helen leaned back in her chair and smiled. “He’s the only man I know who probably prays for an accident or illness so he can see you before his next check-up. Hell, I’m tempted to trip him on the stairs. Why aren’t you dating the guy?”

Peter slowly shook his head. “He is an attractive man. I’m his physician. Getting personal would be a breach of professional conduct, as well as a conflict of interest. We joke, but I have no idea how he might feel about me. So, if we can get on to the rest of our business…”

Trevor grinned. “Before we get to that, I can take over his file. He’d still have the care he was looking for from our clinic. That would eliminate any potential conflict you might worry about.”

Bernice glanced at Trevor and Helen, winked, and then looked at Peter. “Oh, I might have forgotten to arrange the colonoscopy with Russell. Would you be a dear and give him a call?” She handed him a paper with dates, times, and the man’s phone number.
