Chapter 4: First Mission
"As you all know today's your first mission," Kenja said to team Kami who were standing across from his desk where he sat. This was the first time team Kami were in Kenja's office, the sight of the office put a smile on Manjiro's face.
"No way he has a pinball machine!" Manjiro said excitedly to Lavender and Shita.
"Enough we are here for our first mission, be quiet and let Kenja speak," Kami said with an angry tone.
"Anyways, your mission is to infiltrate the city of Tono. Many scouts that I have sent and refugees that have escaped have said that the whole city has been taken over by demons. From the scouting report, there are many D rank demons and three C rank demons, your mission is to kill the three C rank demons. After that report back and I will send another group of sorcerers to handle the D rank demons."
"C rank? And three of them? Why would you give rookies a mission including C rank demons, especially on their first mission?" Kami asked curiously.
"Well from sensing their cursed energy I can see that they have come a long way since the ceremony," Kenja explained breathing calmly
"Also you're with them Kami, you're used to missions that include A rank demons so your team should be fine," Kenja said while lighting up a cigarette.
"I guess so, it just caught me by surprise that you would let rookies go on a mission that included C rank demons"
"Well yes, but this year's cadets are a bit different there have been three squads already that have taken on missions that included C rank demons, and they all succeeded this should be no different," This statement by Kenja shocked Kami but put a smile on Manjiro's face, he was determined to succeed on his first mission and show off the training that he has done in the past month.
As the group left Kenja's office and arrived at the gate for departure Kami stops them.
"Everyone draw out some blood," As he says this he takes out three blood capsules.
"Why?" Lavender says uncomfortably
"Remember a month ago when I said that cursed energy is in your blood?" Kami asked
"Yea that why we used blood to determine our elements," Lavender said.
"Yes, by you drawing out your blood and putting it in these blood capsules I will be able to track your cursed energy just in case someone gets lost or off track. If you guys are in trouble I can come in and eliminate any threat," Kami explained.
Manjiro, Shita and Lavender all listen to their sensei and fill up the blood capsules. After they did this, they all crossed the gate and left Heiwa no Kuni, and make their way to the city of Tono.
While walking to Toro Manjiro asks Kami an interesting question, "Sensei what's the difference between a D rank demon and a C rank demon?"
"What made you ask that question?" Kami replied
Manjiro looking down on the floor responded, "I mean you were shocked that rookies would get a mission which included a C rank demon, so I got curious."
"Well a C rank demon is much stronger than a D rank demon hence why it's ranked higher but that's not the only thing that puts them higher than a D rank. It's also their ability to consume more humans and being able to take over more land, so overall they are more dangerous," Kami said as they kept walking.
"I see a gate," Said Shita as he was ahead of the group.
"Is….. That a d-" Lavender
"Yea and he has a friend" Manjiro spoke.
"Sensei let me take them both," Shita said with confidence this made Manjiro clench his fist in anger.
"Did you not hear what Lord Kenja said? He told us the kill the C rank demons, not the Drank d-,"
"Fine by me," Said Kami as he interrupted Lavender.
"No! I want to take one on as well" Said Manjiro with a determined look in his eyes.
"Fine Shita, you take on the one to the left, and Manjiro you can take the one on the right."
"Roger" Shita and Manjiro shouted. As both of them made their way towards the demons Shita's demon dashed towards him with his claws out. Shita easily reacts to this attack by jumping into the air and at the same time summons fire onto his fist, he lands behind the demon.
"You're too slow" and he punches the demon with his fist engulfed with fire decapitating the demon.
"He added fire to his fist and also added cursed energy to make his punch stronger, impressive," Kami said with a smile on his fist.
"Sensi Manjiro is in trouble!" Lavender shouted as Kami looked towards Manjiro he was pinned against a tree by his neck and the demon opening his mouth to eat him. As the demon's tongue reached Manjiro's face its body turned into ash.
"That was close… two more seconds and you would be demon food," Kami said.
"Was that fire he used just now?" Shita thought to himself, "That's impossible only the clan I belong to should have it, what is he,"
"Damn it! How could this happen!" Manjiro said as he punched the ground causing his fists to bleed. "The last month of training just for me to lost to a D rank demon," He said with teary eyes.
"You underestimated your opponent," Kami said lending a hand to his student "next time don't underestimate your opponent, it's okay to lose but don't give up and start crying," As Kami said this Manjiro wiped the tears off his eyes.
"Right! Let's go in" Manjiro shouted.
"Now that's the spirit," Lavender said as they made their way into Toro city.
"Huh? What just happened, my children defeated?" A fox-like demon spoke.
"Who cares about your children Sozo, the worst part is that they were defeated by ugly humans," a female foxlike demon muttered.
"I do Tamayo and if you insult any of my children I shall kill you," Sozo said in a calming voice
"Both of you stop it, one of the four who has come is named Kami Shinto nicknamed by A-rank demons and sorcerers the God of Sorcery and is rumored to have mastered all of the cursed energy elements," Said the third fox-like demon "Finally I can test my strength,"
