Chapter 65: Chapter POV Vailein

The last half month before the tournament we go out again and visit the Audino clan. While our Pokemon train and spar with several Pokemon on the same level, Mav Kira Janfa and I create a small cavern somewhere hidden. The inside of the cavern is coated with a layer of the metal mixture that hides it from energy scans. Medicham places another teleportation focal point down here. With the help of our bikes that my dad created, it is easy to enter and leave at high enough speeds that almost no one would find it. Those that do find it should think twice because there are several pseudo-king Pokemon close by the cavern. Building this cave in 2 weeks is a grueling task in and of itself, even more so when you don't want to use Aura so you leave even less traces.

Our Pokemon saw us working hard, this made them work extra hard as well. That in turn makes the wild Pokemon train hard too. Some of the wild Pokemon have a small breakthrough, ours however just gain more experience battling no significant improvements. Expecting the tournament to be very tiring, we take a 2 day rest period before it starts. The Audino clan helps us completely recover and be rested, this almost feels like cheating, which I like.

We return 10 minutes before the tournament randomizer starts to assign places. The whole class seeing us in such a good state falls silent. Porygon finds a post on the school forum offering 1 billion Poké if we are injured enough to not be able to partake in the tournament. My guess is that some professional trainers tried claiming it only to be unable to find us. That has to be embarrassing. This means that we are the nightmare to meet in this tournament. I get number 4962, Mav has number 1071, Kira gets number 3048, Janfa takes number 1. The tournament this time is a single knockout tournament in 5 brackets. The top 2 of each bracket has another battle against each other victor of a bracket to decide the final victor, this coincides with the top 10. Well since we all are in different brackets we won't have to battle until the final 10 so that's good. My choice of battling would be to train 4 Pokemon and have my final Pokemon wipe the remaining Pokemon away and thus advance.

Each day there is only a single battle per person. The ones that need the most training in my eyes are Tirtouga, Nidoking and Honedge. The Pokemon I can count on to bring me victory are Houndoom, Pidgeot, Medicham. The remaining Pokemon Comfey, Audino and Flaaffy also need some battle experience, though it is less pressing. Comfey is not comfortable in battle but does need to learn how to survive. Audino packs a mean punch but has a lot of chances of killing the opponent instead. Flaaffy is a battle Pokemon but is in between my weak Pokemon and my strong Pokemon, I don't really understand why myself.

Each bracket is held in a different arena, each battle in a closed space. So I have no clue how strong most people are. I guess it is also fair, because everyone can keep the same secrets this way. This however makes our first opponent a tad unlucky. My first opponent has no benchmark for average strength, since I never paid much attention to others he has to become the benchmark. This means that Flaaffy, my Pokemon solidly in the middle, goes up to the stage first. Flaaffy is prepared for a bunch of strong Pokemon but starts off against 4 advanced stage Pokemon, a big disappointment. A few thunderbolts are enough to deal with each opponent until the trainer finally sends out an Elite stage Pokemon. The elite stage Pokemon is an Avalugg.

Avalugg vs Flaaffy

Avalugg is a slow moving Pokemon who can take a harsh beating, it uses ice attacks to reduce the movement area of the opponent until it can hit it and encase it in ice. To start off, Avalugg uses his energy to create a lot of ice. The ice is then launched into the air. The ice freezes small droplets of water that are in the air. Those small frozen droplets pelt down indiscriminately all over the arena and even slightly outside. The arena itself however is enclosed by an energy barrier to prevent the viewers from being pulled into the fight. This in turn is beneficial to Avalugg, the pelting ice freezes the edges of the arena and grow with each new ice flake that falls down. Flaaffy has no large area attacks to counter it, only small area attacks. By using volt tackle in a particular way it is almost like a lightning coat that automatically attacks everything that is within 20cm of Flaaffy, in this case every small ice flake near Flaaffy. Flaaffy uses volt tackle at the same time to start running around Avalugg, looking where to attack, while creating friction with it's fur so that the electric charge is being kept.

Avalugg so far doesn't pay much attention to Flaaffy and emits cold air. When the air forms icicles they are launched higher to add to the ice storm, creating a freezing blizzard, that in turn increases the ice walls that surround the arena. Flaaffy quickly notices that it's tactic is at best a temporary stay of execution. This forces Flaaffy to change from a defensive tactic to an offensive one. The volt tackle aura is suddenly shot up towards the most congregated ice cloud. The lightning goes up and charges the ice while jumping in a certain radius between small ice parts. When the ice reaches a melting point the highly charges water rains down, Avaluggs ice control is lost on those drops because the energy changes. The electric charge in the drops hurt Avalugg, but since it trains as a tank it shakes off that little damage in seconds and keeps up its tactic of slowly freezing the whole arena.

Avalugg is slowly increasing the pace. Next to a blizzard, or strong hail it is now able to release ice blocks the size of fists. Those fist sized ice rocks shoot out towards Flaaffy like they are shot from a cannon. Flaaffy is still running around charging into the next volt tackle. Each ice rock that misses imbeds itself in the already existing ice walls, accelerating the formation of the walls by 60% for a few seconds. In a short period of time this means that The battlefield is reduced by 25% due to ice. Flaaffy still has enough space to dodge but at the same time the space slowly decreases. Flaaffy however is not stupid and is trowing thunderbolts in the direction of Avalugg, most of those do hit but Avalugg is still shrugging it off like it is nothing. In the end it is Flaaffy's physical energy that gets exhausted, this in turn quickly reduces the electric charge it can get from friction. In order to win Flaaffy has to reduce its core energy, which results in a decrease in strength until it can be recovered. Flaaffy refuses since it is a friendly competition, this means that it gives up the fight. A red beam quickly shoots out hitting Flaaffy and Flaaffy vanishes. Avalugg looks stumped until the trainer congratulates Avalugg on a well earned victory. Avaluggs trainer asks if he can continue, to which Avalugg answers positively.

A red light flashes once more and Flaaffy appears next to me. I still have 4 Pokemon I can send out to battle and only Avalugg as an opponent. I decide that the next one is the youngest, Honedge.

Avalugg vs Honedge

I send out Honedge to battle Avalugg, this will be the first time that Honedge fights autonomously, not being in my hand. The largest advantage Honedge has against Avalugg is that it can phase through hard objects since it is part ghost. Of course phasing through an object with the energy of an opponent will hurt Honedge. Honedge starts the combat by pointing it's blade directly, a dark sphere gathers at the tip of the blade. Once the sphere hides the whole of Honedge, Honedge pulses energy directly from the orb, with a few small intervals in between. Avalugg sees it all happen and tries to make Honedge move by firing ice beams directly towards it but the energy in the ice gets cancelled out by the dark orb and further it phases right through the ice suffering nearly no damage. When the pulses keep rolling and pushing Avalugg back inch by inch it seems as if Honedge is winning but what Honedge misses is that more and more ice is growing right behind it trying to encapsulate Honedge into the already existing ice. Lucky for Honedge he isn't fighting alone and trainers are allowed to help their Pokemon fight. A simple behind you from my voice allows Honedge to prevent being captured in the ice. Since Honedge moves the dark energy pulses stop for a moment. This in turn allows Avalugg to charge a larger ice beam. Honedge breaks that ice beam by coating itself in dark energy and slashing the beam like an anime character that resists a strong energy beam. This only stops when Avalugg needs to gather new energy for the next attack. This also proves that Avalugg is currently using the surroundings to recharge its core, creating a cycle of give and take. This makes Avalugg more durable then I thought. Honedge sees what is happening and copies a part of Avaluggs idea. Dark energy that stays after the attack is integrated into the next attack enhancing the next attack ever so slightly. After 30 exchanges of moves Avaluggs energy can no long recover fast enough to keep up with the expenditure that Honedge is forcing it to have. A soft cry allows the trainer to return Avalugg before it is injured badly.
