Chapter 3: Chapter 3

Niall woke up to the smell of bread. His mother had always put bread in the oven to cook before leaving to the apothecary as it was a long walk away. Niall put on his jacket and walked downstairs. Bread was sitting in the oven. If he had woken up an hour later, his breakfast would have been ruined. Niall put a towel over his hands and pulled the bread out, setting it on the counter to cool and sat down at the table. He grabbed a stone melon from under the table and cracked it. Its soft flesh spilled out of the hard shell. Niall put the flesh into the shell and mashed it until it became a soft pulp. He grabbed the soft bread and spread the stone melon mash onto it. This was the traditional post Reverence Day breakfast. Niall quickly ate and ran out the door. Although the day after Reverence Day was a work-free day, with the exception of slaves, Niall had to make it to the town square for the celebration. The Reverence Festival was the biggest celebration of the year, even larger than Reverence Day itself. The sun was thankfully not too bright today. Winter was approaching and the sun would shine less and less. Niall pulled his veil off to appreciate the gray skies. Niall could see the kites and other flying toys above the town square. Upon reaching the festival, Niall could not help but smile. This was his favorite time of year when everyone gathered together in celebration. Niall began walking to the stands. He noticed the dead silence that followed him. Many people were staring at him. Could this be because of the altercation with his father? It had to be. Niall silently cursed him, how could he be so foolish? He walked up to a stand to buy a small northern quail. Their meat was always tender and their stomachs fat. The seller gave Niall a dirty look.

"One quail please." said Niall.

"Are you going to steal from the nation too?' spat the seller. Niall sighed.

"I only want one quail." said Niall.

"Fine." hissed the seller. He tossed Niall a quail. Niall placed the money needed on the counter, took the quail and walked away. Every one of his steps was followed by the murmurs and whispers of citizens.

"Niall!" A voice from the crowd. Saia pushed through the crowd and walked up to him. The crowd resumed its talkative nature.

"Hello, Saia," sighed Niall, "don't your parents need you at home?" Niall was sure that Saia was needed to tend to the livestock and horses at her family tavern.

"Actually, no." Saia smile was gleaming. "A man gave us his slave for a month at the inn."

Niall took a bite of his quail.

"Let's go play a game," blurted Saia, "I know that Estel and a few others are playing at the Old Palace Gardens."

The Old Palace was one of the most ancient places in the Yendarian Empire, of course with the exception of the Capitol Palace. It was abandoned during the Elven Civil War when it was blown to pieces by Those Blessed By Gods.

"That sounds exciting." said Niall, it would be a good distraction from his father's banishment. Saia and Niall escaped the confinement of the town square and wandered the streets to the edge of town. They peered out upon the large, snowy forest that enveloped the land through the large portcullis. Niall walked over to the viney wall and began climbing. Saia promptly followed him up the wall. Atop the wall, Niall could see just how expansive the forest outside the city was. It was said to stretch over 500 miles. Niall climbed down the wall and put his hands up to assist Saia. Saia hopped down and landed on the soft ground. Niall looked down the winding path to the Palace.

"Come on, Niall!" pressed Saia. "Scared?"

"Oh you!" said Niall. Saia yelped and began running down the path. Niall sprinted after her. The trees were blurred as Niall ran, he was catching up. Saia suddenly stopped. Niall almost tripped over his own feet stopping. Saia's eyes were filled with wonder. Niall finally saw what she was awing at. A large tundra buck was standing in the middle of the path. It's eyes were large and black and seemed to have a soft glow. The creature turned its head to Niall and Saia. Saia gasped. The buck quickly turned its head away and trotted off.

"That was amazing!" Saia hollered. Niall laughed. Saia had always been obsessed with the creatures beyond the citie's walls. Niall began down the path and Saia quickly followed. It was said the Old Palace was cursed with the spirits of Those Blessed By Gods. It was rare to have such a high concentration of them in one place. Those Blessed By Gods were almost legend, one had not been seen in the Yendarian Empire in over a century. Niall had always wondered if they would return to continue their destruction. The Old Palace began to come into view, its tall towers dwarfing the trees around it. The dirt path became stone as Niall walked onto the palace grounds. Saia trailed behind him with her ever beautiful smile.

"Here we are, Saia," exclaimed Niall, "The Old Palace!"
