Chapter 4: Moving
Waking up Marie was startled a bit. She had momentarily forgotten that she was now in a scary new reality. Once her memory returned she was disheartened. Her life had been ripped away by some weird god and now she was playing a game of life and death.
Pushing those thoughts to the back of her mind it was time to get moving.
*Sigh
Glancing at the fire she painstakingly built last night only smoking embers were left. It left a sour feeling in her stomach. 'All that work for it to go out last night eh?' She would have liked to be able to take a piece of the fire with her to keep burning so she wouldn't have to start one again. Foolish as it may seem the blisters on her hand made it seem like a passable idea.
Journeying on through the forest Marie was looking for the water she had spotted yesterday when looking for sticks. A slow-moving mountain creek. If she learned one thing from Survivorman (The better survival show host.) you need to follow water to find civilization. Humans have been bound to bodies of water like any other animal since they came out of the primordial soup. The stuff is essential.
Following the water, she was not idle. Picking nuts and berries that clung to the water she was using the knowledge she gained to distinguish the poison ones from the editable ones. Though she was keeping both she did not want to accidentally kill herself in such a dumb way.
She was keeping the poison versions to build up an immunity. Most of these berries probably could not kill a grown man outright. But to her, they would be a dangerous gamble. It would be best if she waited to get a book or more information on the subject first. The basic knowledge gained from the genin did not provide dosage amounts only that they were poison. She had no idea if they had books outside of ninja villages readily available but she could only hope.
While moving she was also focusing her mind on the way to start practicing chakra control. While the voice outlined the same starting point as she had seen in the anime it did provide a better suggestion on the placement for the infamous leaf exercise. The exercise normally has you place a leaf on the middle of your forehead and try and make it stick using your chakra. The voice suggested to instead put it on the back of your hand. The reason being is that your mind makes it easier to imagine grabbing from the hand because that is its job. When your mind directs your body to grab an object your muscles react. In the same way, your chakra will move accordingly. In so you can work your way up the arm until you can move it around the whole body.
Trying both methods she had to admit the genin was right. Unsure if it was something a clan had figured out and they keep it secrete from nonclan kids. She was just happy that it proved to be something she was quite good at. It was no trouble at all for her to walk and keep it suck on the back of her hand. Keeping her hand in a fist made it exceptionally easier to pay little attention to the leaf. When she opened her hand she had to keep a lot more focus on the leaf or it would fall off. Adding more leaves did create more strain on her focus but it was good exercise.
'Should I stop for the day?' Looking at the sun's position it was not very favorable to keep moving. Another problem is that she is unsure if it's a smart idea to even leave the forest. ' Can I just pass through a village or town without being targeted by criminals or worse politicians? My luck I would end up in the hands of a pedo before I knew it. There is no denying I am quite the cute kid.'
While you can't tell how somebody is going to grow up she had all the features to indicate Marie's new body was quite the beauty. With her delicate face and black hair, she had a lot of hope for the looks department. The only thing that bothered her is her uncanny resemblance to a certain snake of this world. Her skin was now pale white and her eyes were gold with a black vertical slit down the middle. She did not want to think past seeing the resemblance. Nothing she could think of would end up good for her confronting that man. So might as well try and avoid him like the plague until she is strong enough to not care about him.
Walking until mid-day she had enough energy to build a fire and set up a few traps for animals that might procure her dinner or breakfast depending on the efficientness of the trap. Full from the copious amounts of berries and nuts she had plenty of time to practice various things.
"System can you turn these rocks into kunai?" Continuing her idea from the previous days she knew it was possible to ask for lower-tier items for practically nothing. In the case of the ax it was free so why can't she get more rock tools.
"I can for...30 of those blueberries." The system said with a mischievous voice.
A bit taken back Marie could not believe her ears. The minute she acquired anything of value this mean-spirited system wanted a piece. "Why would you even need berries system stop being stubborn."
"The system is not required to do anything for free. If you think you can make it better without the system you are welcome to try." Like always the system would not give an inch to Marie.
"Fine." With venom in her tone, Marie had no choice but to put up with the dastardly system. Like before after a couple of minutes she had six perfectly formed rock kunai. When she was tired from too much chakra use she wanted to improve her throwing skills.
*pok pok pok
"Ha, this is kinda fun why did I not throw knives in my last life? You can always find videos online of people teaching you how, I never imagined it was this fun." Even though she was having fun her aim left much to be desired. She keeps having to reread the information or listen to the insights of her benefactor. Slight progress could be seen as she went on but it was not a skill you could just become a master in 4 hours.
With tired muscles and weak amounts of chakra, Marie checked her traps to no avail. It would seem patience is king when you are trapping animals.
Shugging her shoulders she had enough berries to last her the night. Laying down next to her fire the question of whether or not to stay in the forest was stuck in her mind. 'The only downside is the lack of comfort. While I would love to go out and stay in a nice house how possible is that for me right now?' Not a trustful person Marie had plenty of doubts about the people in this world. The nail that sticks out gets hammered and Marie is no doubt different even in the naruto world. Maybe in a ninja village, she would not be looked at differently but to everyday citizens, she sticks out like a sore thumb.
'As much as I hate it let's not leave until I at least master what I have in front of me then I can feel safe that normal citizens would have trouble dealing with me.' Solid in her decision she called it a night. Unknown that she might have to deal with citizens quite soon.
