Chapter 2: Chapter 1

Divergent

As a teacher, school sucks. Hisoki runs towards his designated classroom, ten minutes late. Why was he late? He's the damn teacher! He huffs, running down the identical halls, the room numbers slowly rising. 206, 207, 208,209….. He was going to be teaching in room 221, what hall was that in again? He had tried to look nice for school, having his black hair flat ironed, and a brown tie to match his shoes.

His vintage shoulder bag was starting to weigh on him, slowing down his movements. The bell had already rung ten minutes ago, but he wasn't even at school by that time. His entire morning routine was set back thirty minutes, since his alarm didn't wake him up, his dog did. "Come on.." Hisoki muttered, continuing to run down the halls. 219, 220, 221, 222- oh wait! He took a couple of steps back, placing his hand on the door.

The halls of this school were white cement brinks, but that wasn't a bad thing. There was the commons, the library, the courtyard, the gym, and his home; the educational unit. His room was in the language hall. At this all-boys school, language was very important. He was half Japanese, half White. Hisoki was born in America and spoke English and Japanese fluently.

He was an English teacher, which was as fun as you would think. He took a much-needed breath, before opening the door. He calmly entered the room, shutting the door behind him and walking over to his desk at the corner of his room. He lowered his head, letting the strap go over it, setting the bag on top of the wooden desk.

The group of students stands up, bowing at him. Hisoki bows back. He never liked that in his classroom, but it's normal for students to do that on the first day, no reason to be mad.

He looked up at his class. All boys, not a shocker, but they all seemed pleasant. He smiled, waving his hand towards the class. "*Hi.*" He says, a small smile on his face. He thought it was always meant to speak only English to a first-level class, but he decided to be a little mean. "*How is everyone?*" There was barely an answer, everyone looking at him in confusion. He loved this class.

"Sorry, I can speak Japanese. I'm not one of those teachers." He says with a small smile, sitting on his desk. He could hear the sigh of relief coming from different students. "Ok, well. Hi, I know everyone goes my Mr, but I'm barely older than you guys. So my name is Hisoki."

He waves at everyone, and some students even way back. "Ok, well let's get started." He hops off the desk, walking over to the clean, whiteboard. He grabbed a red Expo Marker, writing the word *Hello* on the board. "Who knows what this means?" He asks, underlining the foreign word.

English is a very useful language to have. Many of the big countries count that as their national language or is second on the list. If you want to live in any of those countries, English is expected. However, in Japan, English has become a part of the Japanese language. Wasei-Eigo is what Japanese mixed with English is called. However, most people know very simple English, since it is a very prominent language. Hisoki expected someone to know. But almost all the boys raised their hands.

"Hm. Ok, then, let's do this. Say your name, then the answer. That's how I'm gonna remember. You, blond hair." He says, gesturing to a boy sitting in the corner. "My name's Baker. Is the word, *Hello*?" Hisoki smiles and nods. "Yeah, it is. Good job. Do you know what *Hello* means?" The boy stops for a moment, thinking. "Um, hi? Like, a greeting?" He says, hesitation clear in his voice. Hisoki however, nods. "Very good."

He smiles at the boy, giving him a soft nod before looking at the rest of the class. "Did everyone here, Baker? He said that *Hello* means hi. It's a basic greeting. Now, unlike Japanese and most Asian languages, English doesn't have formal or informal."

The kids look at him weirdly. This was always the hardest part of teaching English. A language is a clicking learning experience, it has to click. "No matter whom you say it to, me, your parents, your friends, whoever. It's always just *Hello.* Now, there are some more formal words you can use to be polite, but it's different depending on where you-"

"Excuse me?" A kid says, raising his hand. Hisoki looks over, leaning back onto his desk and gesturing towards him. "Yes sir, what's your name?" Hisoki asks. The boy stays quiet for a second, before huffing. "I'm Harley." The boy muttered. Hisoki hummed, nodding his head. "What's up?"

"Can I go to the bathroom?" A teacher's worst phrase. It's always annoying to hear this, even for Hisoki. He nods his head, gesturing to the door.

"Of course." He says with a smile. Man, he hated that phrase. This was his first time being at an all-boys school, however, he did get some intel from another teacher. If a student takes their bag with them to the bathroom, they aren't going to use the bathroom.

Harley takes his bag.

Hisoki doesn't care, but it's always hurtful when that happens. The professor watches the student leave, before looking back to the class. "Ok, where was I?"

Hisoki looked towards the clock. Only ten minutes before this class ends. "Ok, so I have homework today. But it's super easy and it's just learning about yourselves, all right? Ok, Yoshi, can you pass these out?" He asked, taking a stack of papers and bringing it to the brunette boy. He nodded, holding the papers and standing up from his seat. "Ok, any questions for today? I know we just really talked about English as a whole, but anything you guys want to know?"

Harley steps back into the classroom, exactly three minutes before the class ends. How does it take forty minutes to use the bathroom? "Oh, look who decided to show up. Harley, can you stay after class. I'll give you a pass." Harley sighs, but nods, sitting back in his seat. "All right, so I hope you guys have a good day at Yokosa. I heard all of you were seniors, so how is your last first day of high school?" He asks, and some people raised their hands to answer, however, a certain quiet boy that Hisoki had noticed, slumped in his seat.

"The boy with the black hair, how was your first day?" Hisoki asked, looking over at the boy. He looked up, sitting up in his seat. "Hi, I'm Kai. I like the schedule a lot better than last year." He says with a shrug. Hisoki nodded. "It is, you can change it to, which is nice." He checked the time. Two minutes. Hisoki looked back up at the class, clapping his hands. "Well, class is over, so you guys can go!" He says happily, waving the class off.

Hisoki watched the different kids leave. He grabs his book, reading it, before remembering something. "Harley…" He says, singing the boy's name. The black-haired kid sighed, walking up to him.

Oh, this will not be good….
