Chapter 6: At the top smiting and fate
The group continues to walk up the path for about fifteen minutes before they see the exit to the cave that leads to the mid point of the tor that is a sort of large clearing covered in grass with a few trees scattered about. walking out of the cave alastair immediately notices the intense fog that pervades the area severely limiting visibility. this lack of sight bothers alastair as it means he will not notice any monsters until they are close. sandy alerts to the tall grass to the right of the cave exit where a small boy runs out of crying.
Both emma and alastair were surprised at the appearance of the child as it was restricted for anyone below sixteen to climb the tor. no sooner than the boy had been held by emma had he cried out in fear as two small clouds of fog much darker than the natural fog with two glowing pupil less eyes and a glowing zigzagged tooth mouth approached rapidly obviously chasing the boy. "smogs." alastair said under his breath when he saw the two monsters before remembering that magic is best for noncorporal monsters like this as because weapons that create large air flows most other weapons only serve as irritation to monsters like these.
Raising his empty left hand alastair used the low level wind attack spell woosh that despite the embarrassing name was quite effective against enemies like smogs whose bodies are made of gas. the palm of alastairs left hand glowed slightly before violent winds shot towards the two smogs who were stunned briefly because of the two new humans and dog with their prey. the winds struck the gaseous bodies of the smogs and began to viciously rip them apart causing them to wail in agony before dissipating into purple impure mana.
Alastairs spell ended right after the two smogs died since it was a short term spell rather than a continuous one. turning to emma and the boy alastair spoke "have sandy go with the boy down the tor so she can make sure he gets back to his parents safely." he said seriously. emma looked at sandy seriously "you go with this little one and see him safe alright." she said to which sandy barked as though agreeing before both she and the boy head into the cave cautiously.
After the child and sandy left alastair and emma continued up the tor via a few ropes leading higher up while thankfully not having and more monsters to have to deal with. soon the duo reach another clearing with a sign labeled tors top right next to the entrance of the clearing making it obvious that this is were they are supposed to be. before the two could look around a large blue feathered eagle like monster swooped down spooking both alastair as well as emma who slipped on the edge of the cliff she was next falling down but thankfully she caught the cliff with her right hand.
Alastair panicked and dove to grab emma's hand that was slipping while the monster circled around to finish off the two but as if sensing the danger alastair was in the mark on his left hand glowed brightly before sending a beam of light into the sky which exploded into a massive version of the symbol on alastairs hand before the symbol in the sky released a lighting bolt at the monster who barely had time to be regretful before being obliterated. the symbol in the sky faded away before the cloud cover did the same as alastair pulled emma up carefully.
Emma gasped when she saw alastairs left hand "look your hand!" she said in astonishment and alastair looked at the still glowing symbol in surprise as the glow rapidly faded away returning the symbol back to normal. "looks like I'll be having a talk with mum when we get back." alastair said before whistling at the amazing view like he could see the whole world from here. emma also looked over the view with an amazed gasp. "maybe the ceremony is only just to show us how big the world truly is." she said enlightened.
Alastair could only nod in agreement before soaking in the view one last time before the duo headed back down the tor only this time the trip was much faster since the monsters haven't respawned yet. at the bottom of the tor the duo found sandy standing with a family of three including the child they rescued earlier. the family thanked the duo for saving their son which alastair passed off as something he should do any way before emma and he headed back to the village. the trip to the village was uneventful and they arrived at alastairs house were he lived with his mom.
Pushing open the door alastairs mom turned from the stove were she was cooking what smelled like his favorite chili that she rarely made to greet him. "welcome home son been making your favorite while i wait. but what is with that dour expression on your face did something happen?" she asked concerned. alastair explained what had occurred at the top of the tor with the symbol on his hand and the lightning strike on the monster. she sighed when he finished talking before speaking. "i knew this day would come i suppose you deserve the true."
"Back when you were but a babe your grandpa came home one day with you sleeping in a basket peacefully and told me that you had no one else in the world and asked me to take care of you before explaining the meaning of that symbol on your hand. you are the reincarnation of the luminary sent into the world to rid it of the dark one." she said seriously. "since that symbol activated it would mean that it is finally time for you to head out into the world and make your mark i had merely hoped the day would come later. when chalky found you this was the only thing on you that could be used as proof of who you are , show this to the king of heliodor and he will help you fulfill your destiny i'm sure but that's a matter for when you leave for now whos hungry."
