Chapter 1: Death

How long has it been since I was able to see the radiant blue sky? Now, my eyes only gaze up at a plain white ceiling. Other than the life-threatening disease I am diagnosed with; the dullness could kill me at any moment.

Being hooked up to these machines and monitored constantly was a pain. But what hurt me the most was the look on my mother's face when she came and visited me.

I didn't like to see people crying, especially my mother. Sometimes she would look at me and hold my hands firmly. In my darkest moments, my mother's presence was a light that shined through it all.

My mother would regularly visit me after work. Other than her, my friends from school also came by and visited me. They would tell me how everyone I knew was going and the occasional sweets they would sneak in for me since they weren't allowed.

As we talked, I could tell by the looks on their faces that they were concerned for me.

I kept reminding them that I was going to get better and would be back at school with them in a matter of no time.

Then, that day came.

My specialist doctor, Dr Randa, broke the news to me with a concerning yet collected face.

"Mr Jones, I am sorry to inform you of this concerning matter however, please remain calm."

Those words sent shivers down my spine.

"Yes, Dr Randa?"

"The progress of your disease has seemed to have worsened."

Worsened? What do you mean by 'worsened.'

"An analysis from your most recent checkup has revealed that your disease has infected your heart and is producing more of these virus cells. And these virus cells are evolving at an alarming rate of which your body can't keep up with. In other words, your immunity system is slowly deteriorating."

"So what does that mean, can you cure me or not?"

"We have identified multiple drugs and treatments that could help slow down the process, but as it is, we are left uncertain at the moment since this scenario is a special case.

I protested in anger "That doesn't answer my question! Yes or no!"

Dr Randa expression doesn't change from my reaction. As expected of a doctor trained for these types of situations.

"No. Our current methods can only extend your life for so long until our staff can find a permanent solution. Even so, it will take time and time is what we don't have."

The room remains silent for a moment.

I tried calming down but all I could think of were "Am I going to die." "I don't want to die." "What is the point of stalling the inevitable anyway."

Dr Randa breaks the silence.

"I'm sorry that we aren't able to do much. But if we could, we would try our hardest to help cure you.

I snapped back into reality. Realising those words helped lighten the mood.

"Thank you, but you have already helped me a lot, Dr Randa. If you weren't my doctor, I would have given up on living ages ago."

"No need for the compliments. It's our job as doctors to help take care of our patients. After this, I would inform your mother of this information."

"Thanks, but when you do. Try and break it to her slowly. I wouldn't want her to cause a scene."

"Don't worry Mr Jones, we have our procedures."

After our talk, she walks out of the room and gently shuts the door behind her.

What a day.

I had always thought I would make it to 100 years old. Well, I guess that was just wishful thinking.

Now that I think about it. What have I accomplished in my 17 years of being alive on this planet?

Charlie Jones. The average teenager who lived an average life died from an incurable disease...

"DAMN IT!"

I slam my hand against the bed in frustration.

There were still so many things left I wanted to do.

Like visit every continent on the planet and go skydiving. What's wrong with doing that.

I still got regrets too.

My number one regret was not asking Charlotte out. The first time I ever saw her was probably love at first sight.

Just thinking about her makes my heart flutter.

Hold on, I don't think my heart is supposed to flutter this much and why do I find it so much harder to breathe now?

*Panting*

I reach over to the emergency button.

*Ding*

I lay there and waited.

Not long after, Dr Randa and two nurses accompanying her came to my aid.

I started to lose consciousness with each breath I take.

Dr Randa notices my condition and immediately calls for an emergency.

"He's going into a cardiac arrest, quick!"

Oh no. This can't be my time yet.

I can't keep my eyes open.

Open eyes, open!
