Chapter 2: What silly tricks

The large glass dome broke, the crack resounding like a stroke of a whip. Loud and thunderous.

In the middle of the sharp glass shards was a figure dressed in pitch black.

Lux's eyes flashed with recognition and her mouth went dry.

"Griffin!"

A loud name rang out with ferocity and suddenly the large earth walls changed shape, growing taller and moving with dangerous speed, like a shark's fin in the water. It collected together and raised into a stairway. Lux leapt, jumping on the steps with her long dress trailing behind her.

There was a strange sense of urgency in her eyes and she climbed the crude steps.

She charged forward and in a swift motion caught the falling man in her arms, kneeling on one knee to support his head.

It would have looked rather romantic. A maiden cradling her fallen lover in her arms only if it weren't for the fight ongoing below them. Lux tightly clutched him in her arms, her eyes scanning his black fitted shirt and pants torn with few scratches. His black shirt moulded with his well-defined muscles. His face was covered with a black face mask, his black hair ruffled with a trail of blood travelling down his forehead, staining his pale skin. Blue veins were crawling towards his closed eyes. His body felt too cold, like holding a cube of ice.

Something had gone wrong.

Alpin was supposed to be on stand by and provide assistance from outside. He was not involved in the main plan.

Without thinking, Lux clutched his wrist and slightly lifted his sleeve, the chaos and urgency around her forgotten into a dull haze.

Blue veins throbbed on the jade white wrist. They looked unnatural, a web of blue veins started from under the sleeve and continued under the black glove. Lux tightened her hold on his wrist, her palm heating in an instant. Veins appeared on her wrist and her fair skin warmed in blistering red.

Slowly and with extreme care she moved the warmth from her palm to his hands. She closed her eyes in concentration as she guided the heat along his veins and arteries, gradually warming his nearly frozen blood.

A huge man appeared behind her, his towering height and bulging muscles cast a shadow on her small frame.

Griffin stood behind her quietly, his eyes resting on Alpin's closed eyes and Lux's flushed cheeks. The air around her was fluctuating with waves of heat. Griffin was standing still waiting for her orders when she opened her eyes. Lux turned and blinked at him, her eyes urging him on.

Understanding flashed in Griffin's eyes, he spotted Bolt and curved his hands into a claw. A large hand made of earth scooped Bolt and dropped him at the small peak where they were standing.

Bolt stumbled back and fell on his butt.

"What next?" Bolt asked while glancing at Alpin and Lux.

"Where is June?" Lux said ignoring his question, her eyes on Alpin while she held his wrist counting his pulse.

"He wasn't with me, I was at the C terminal before ... here," Griffin spoke, hesitating on the word 'here', while his eyes concentrated on the people below who were surrounding them.

People in red and golden robes were starting to fill the second-floor gallery. Griffin curiously looked at them as they flipped open thick books in their hands and raised an arm towards them while mumbling incoherently.

Instinctively Griffin knew they were about to do something unexpected.

Instantly he placed his hand on the earth below his feet and consciously started pulling the boundary to raise walls around them.

But before the walls could even raise properly they were slashed through cleanly by a sword aura, like a wind blade of red and black it dissipated after cutting the walls, leaving the debris to fall with loud thuds.

At that moment a circle of fire appeared with them at the centre, the robed men started chanting louder and their palms glowed golden. The ring of fire was blazing and whirling, choking and melting the people present.

"What silly tricks," Bolt tsked, sending the guards falling on their asses with a simple clap of his hands.

Just then the ring of fire trembled with a roar and shrank towards them at an alarming speed, intending to incinerate them with a single slash. Screams rang out as the hall was lit brightly.

Lux blinked at it, still kneeling with Alpin in her arms. She raised her arm and with a gentle motion, sucked the scorching fire in her palm as easily and gracefully as plucking fruits.

The mighty fire that was roaring a moment ago was sucked in her palm within seconds and disappeared without a trace.
