Chapter 1: Awakened in Danmachi: Chapter 1

[Congratulations, you have awakened.]

[Please select a class from the list provided.]

[Common classes]

[Warrior]

[Ranger]

[Mage]

[Unique classes](Note: Unique classes may not be stronger than common classes so choose wisely.)

[Escapist]

[Runner]

"No… no, no, no. This can't be happening. I don't want to awaken, system… Please choose someone else. I have a family, a wife, kids, and even a dog. I don't want to fight."

[Select a class within 5 minutes or your soul will be incinerated]

"I… Please… I don-"

[Select a class within 4 Minutes and 45 seconds or your soul will be incinerated]

"I'm not getting out of this am I?"

'Alright… calm down, I can do this, all I have to do is choose a class.'

I quickly browsed over the common class options, as far as I can remember the class that gets awakened killed the most is the warrior class. As early on they don't have a high enough endurance statistic to take hit's, and awakened who select this class usually find out fairly quickly that pain resistance is not a skill that comes with the class.

Ranger was a decent option, however it is currently the most common class that those that have awakened choose. Meaning, they oversaturate guilds making it harder for new rangers to find any form of safety in numbers, as guilds want more diversity in order to capture dungeons efficiently.

Mages… mages were even more suicidal than warriors. As their mana control skill is fairly weak early on, they tend to kill themselves with their own spells.

"I guess that leaves the unique classes."

With a sigh I moved on to the unique classes.

As far as I knew, unique classes were mixed bags. The system creates them if those that had awakened did something special prior to awakening. In my case, I assume I gained the ability to select the Escapist class due to having escaped prison 3 separate times, and successfully escaping the U.S.A. without getting caught.

For the record, I accidentally murdered 3 guys, it was completely unintentional, and it happened on 3 separate occasions. The first was by accidentally hitting a guy with my truck, he was jaywalking but I guess murder is still murder. I killed the second guy by accidentally knocking a flower pot off the second floor of my house, which hit him on the head and killed him instantly. The third and final murder, was a result of me accidentally knocking some guy onto a train track, he seemed to have been overworked and didn't leave the tracks fast enough, and was killed as a result.

I personally don't think I should have been arrested for any of those, but here we are.

As for the runner class? I'm fairly certain I unlocked that by literally being on the run for a little over 5 years now. The system was never good with earth terminology, at least that's what those that had awakened said.

So… runner or escapist. I have no idea what the runner class may entail, but if I had to guess, I would say it probably has something to do with stealth. Whereas the escapist class obviously has something to do with escape.

Now, in terms of prioritising my own safety, escapist is definitely the better option. As it should allow me to escape from things like traps or monsters… or prisons if I'm unlucky.

Runner on the other hand? Unless I need to hide for extended periods of time, It probably won't be terribly useful. I also don't plan on becoming a new dungeon surveyor, as those guys never live long.

I suppose escapist is the best class choice I have.

[Select a class within 1 Minute or your soul will be incinerated]

"Alright, alright I get it. Select escapist… please don't make me regret this."

[Class chosen]

[Generating Status]

[Name: Charley]

[Class: Escapist][Status points gained per level up: +2 Dex, +2 Agi, +1 Int, +1 Wis]

[Level: 0][Exp 0/1]

[Titles][None]

[Endurance: 10]

[Strength: 10]

[Agility: 10]

[Dexterity: 10]

[Intelligence: 10]

[Wisdom: 10]

[Skills]

[Lockpick: 0/100][ Rank F][Passive]

[Escape: 0/100][Rank F][Passive]

That… that is actually pretty good. I not only start with 2 passive skills, but I also get 6 status points per level. While that may not seem like much, common classes only get 5 status points every level. Although, that lack of endurance gain is going to be rough. I'll have to get some defensive skills if I don't want to die immediately.

[Requesting teleportation of awakened Charley to 'Earth' series starter tower.]

[Error, 'Earth' series starter tower teleportation platform has been damaged.]

[Commencing platform repair protocol.]

[Reparation complete.]

[Requesting teleportation of awakened Charley to 'Earth' series starter tower.]

[Error, due to previous failure in teleportation, 'Earth' series starter tower believes awakened Charley to already be within it.]

[Error, awakened Charley can no longer be teleported to 'Earth' series starter tower.]

[Finding a new starter tower to teleport awakened Charley into.]

[Error, no other starter towers were found within this dimension.]

[Expanding search… 'Anime' series starter tower found.]

[Requesting teleportation of awakened Charley to 'Anime' series starter tower.]

[Request Accepted.]

[Good luck awakened Charley.]

That doesn't sound good… actually, is anime another planet? Am I getting teleported to another planet's starter tower?

As far as I know, once the starter tower is completed you just get teleported to the starter tower's entrance. Does that mean, once I clear the 'Anime' starter tower I'll be teleported to the 'Anime' starter towers entrance? If that happened… will I ever see my family again?

My vision is getting darker, I guess that means the teleportation has started.

--------------------------------------------------[After teleportation]

*Cough cough* "I knew teleportation was supposed to be disorientating, but what the hell!"

[Welcome to the 'Anime' series starter tower. It is most commonly referred to as Babel by the local inhabitants of Orario]

[The average clear time of the Babel starter tower is: N/A. As the starter tower has yet to be cleared.]

[You will not be able to leave the starter tower until you have cleared it. There is a safe zone on the 18th floor.]

[Note: Due to this world not being a part of the system's domain, it is recommended to not mention anything about the system to the local inhabitants, and instead refer to yourself as an adventurer that has taken an oath of secrecy to not disclose your level, stats, development abilities, skills, and your god's name.]

[You are currently on upper floor 1]

[After evaluating your status, and the average status of monsters on this floor, there is a 65% chance you will clear the floor without dying. Good luck.]

[Mentally say inventory and equip your starter equipment.]

W-what? I'm the only one here with the system's assistance? This starter tower has never been cleared? I'm supposed to pretend I have taken some sort of oath? What kind of bullshit is that? I mean, I'll do it, as it is common knowledge that the system only wants to help those that have awakened.

Seriously though, this is more than slightly worrying. I mean, the first safe floor is on floor 18. That's insane, as far as I can remember, Gaia, the 'Earth' series starter tower, had a safe floor every other floor.

Looking around I noticed I was in some sort of cave. The walls seemed to be made of stone, and appear to be light blue in coloration.

Might as well check out my 'inventory'.

[Escapists iron starter dagger][Equip?]

[Escapists leather starter helmet][Equip?]

[Escapists leather starter chestplate][Equip?]

[Escapists leather starter gloves][Equip?]

[Escapists leather starter greaves][Equip?]

'Equip all'

Oooh that's cool. No longer am I wearing my green shirt and pants. Now I've got some rather nice smooth brown leather armor. It doesn't seem to give me any extra status points, but I'm fairly certain that is normal for starter equipment.

"Crgrgrcr"

'The hell was that?'

Turning around, in order to face the direction of the sound, I saw something that I could only describe as terrifying.

The walls split open revealing some sort of small green humanoid looking creature. It had 3 bone spikes sticking out of its forehead, and appeared to be rather fit for it's small stature, it also appeared to be carrying no weapons.

Looking slightly above its head, I saw the words-

[Goblin][Level 1][Normal]

I guess this'll be my first battle. I took a moment to mentally prepare myself, then I lunged at it with all the strength I could muster, yet it dodged out of the way like it didn't even notice my existence.

It even appeared to have been angered by my attack, it quickly raised it's claws and lunged at me, aiming for my head. But I dodged, or tried to at least, as it successfully left a cut on my cheek.

'Oi, from what I remember, those that had awakened said Goblins should be easy to defeat.'

"THIS IS NOT EASY!'

I shouted that last bit, as I narrowly dodged another head strike. The goblin appeared to be slowing down a bit, which seemed to match what I had remembered about them. As they are commonly referred to as weak monsters that had low stamina and could not fight for prolonged periods of time.

After dodging a few more attacks, I managed to successfully land a hit on the goblins left arm. Which stunned it for a few seconds, and allowed me to swiftly stab it right through the neck.

Less than a second later the goblin exploded into a cloud of black smoke, never to be seen again. All that remained was a small manna crystal the size of a fingernail. Before I could grab the crystal, I was interrupted by a system message, followed by a brief feeling of extreme pain that lasted less than a second.

[Goblin][Level 1][Normal][Defeated]

[1 Experience point awarded]

[You have leveled up]

[Your current level is 1]

I feel… faster? Is that the right word? It's like I can not only move faster, but also think faster. It's a strange experience to say the least.

My 'status' should have changed as a result of this right?

[Name: Charley]

[Class: Escapist][Status points gained per level up: +2 Dex, +2 Agi, +1 Int, +1 Wis]

[Level: 1][Exp 0/100]

[Titles][None]

[Endurance: 10]

[Strength: 10]

[Agility: 12]

[Dexterity: 12]

[Intelligence: 11]

[Wisdom: 11]

[Skills]

[Lockpick: 0/100][ Rank F][Passive]

[Escape: 0/100][Rank F][Passive]

Yep, it changed alright.

As I closed my status window, I went to wipe the blood off of my cheek where the goblin had cut me before. Only to realise there was no blood, even the cut had healed.

"Crgrgrcr"

Is that the goblin sound I hea- not a goblin.

The wall opened up to reveal some sort of wolf like creature. It stood on 2 legs, had claws slightly sharper and longer than goblins, and appeared to be faster than goblins as well.

[Kobold][Level 2][Normal]

I remember reading about kobolds a few years ago. Although, those looked more like lizard people than bipedal wolves. Maybe this starter tower just labels enemies differently than Gaia did.

Similar to when I faced the goblin, I lunged at the kobold. And was dodged, the only difference was that the speed of the kobold was much faster than that of the goblin. It even counter attacked me after it successfully dodged, luckily my chestplate existed… otherwise I might have been missing a kidney right about now.

I once again began my dodging spree. Unfortunately the kobold had much more stamina than the goblin. If those who had awakened didn't have such inhuman levels of stamina, I probably would have died a few times over. The fight lasted a little over 2 minutes, which was absolutely insane considering how much I had to move and dodge.

In a similar fashion to the goblins' death the kobold burst into a cloud of black smoke.

[Kobold][Level 2][Normal][Defeated]

[2 Experience points awarded]

This time I didn't check my status, as I was fairly certain nothing had changed. I instead leaned over and picked up the fingernail sized mana crystal that the kobold had dropped. Looking it over, the system generated an appraisal window that described the item.

[Kobold][Level 2][Normal][Mana Crystal]

[Value: 1,300 Valis]

Hmm… I have no idea what Valis are. But I can infer that it is the currency this starter tower operates on.

Well no use standing around, this tower isn't going to clear itself.

With that thought I placed the mana crystal into my inventory and started searching for monsters.
