Chapter 16: Chapter 16.
( A little bit of Christina's story)
It has been more than 3 years since the day Christina was forced to seek refugee in this city. And her expectation was so much compared to what she's experienced in the city. She thought she would be welcomed. She is engaged to the ruler of Poland, Duke Jan Wozniak; before her father was murdered, he told her many things about him, mostly how good his father was and ensure me that he'll be the same strong and kindhearted person as his father.
In general, Jan Wozniak under the praise of her father as well as the rumor about him leading Poland out of economy depression and his chivalry in the recent wars capture himself as a hero in her heart. She is the most beautiful person in the continent, that was the thing everyone tells her. Everyday she tried to learn everything that a girl need to learn: dancing, cooking, playing music,… Everything is for the sake that she can sway her spouse to support her claim to the throne of Lithuania and fulfill her father's dream, a United Kingdom between Poland and Lithuania.
His personality is exactly as what her father imagined. However, there is a part that she doesn't understand. Although he seems to be impressed by her beauty at In the first meeting, he acts normally while talking to her later on and always maintains a distance. She wants to be loved by him since they are going to spend the rest of their life together. She tried to get his attention whenever they get the chance to meet, but his eyes never look directly at her.
Several months ago, her maid and dearest friend, Elizabeth, married a Polish officer. Thanks to the information Elizabeth acquired for her, she knows thatDuke Wozniak has a lover and two children who were born as bastards. This news shocked her and made her lose her mind so much that she burst into his office to confront him about him. He didn't say anything to her from that time, which made her sad even more; she has the freedom to go everywhere she wants in the palace and its surrounding land. But she feels like she is in a cage, and feels very uncomfortable about it.
Christina asks Elizabeth to learn more about the Duke's love life; however, Elizabeth's husband refuses to tell her more and as Elizabeth loves her husband, so she avoids insisting on the problem too much. Christina knows that for some reason, Jan's subordinates always try to be loyal to him as much as possible. He seems to have the instinct to tell who betray him. In a dinner with her, a maid appears to deliver the food; suddenly, he took out his pistol and shot the maid immediately. Later on, the dishes were discovered to be poisoned and there was a grenade under the maid's clothes. There are spies discovered just by being seen by him for just one time. To the people that he knows are loyal and dedicated to his cause, he rewarded them well and encourage them with his words, promises of profits. She intended to sway some of the maids to act as her spies on him but after acknowledging his ability, she decided to stop.
About three weeks ago, she met him in the garden while she was feeding the fish. That was the first time he approaches her, she felt delighted at first but when she looked into his eyes, she sees no love. She let all her feelings out, cried, and asked him hundreds of questions that concerned her mind, her loneliness, worries. And out of the surprises, he hugged her, not like the type of a man hugging a woman but she feels more like the type of a brother trying to comfort his worrying sister.
After she stopped crying, they spend time talking to each other. He apologized to her for making her feel lonely and his true feelings about their marriage. The words were harsh but she knew they are the truth. To him, their marriage is a burden and she is just a beautiful trophy, who can't help him in anything aside from uniting Lithuania and Poland.
After several days of thinking about it, she wants to be more useful, she wants to become a person that other people can rely on. She wants to be admired by her people like her spouse. People of Warsaw always yell his name and hail him whenever they go out for a date on the streets.
And now, after receiving Jan Wozniak's approval, she has attended his meetings with the officers, people, and the most important, military advisors. She learns more about politics, warfare, and ruling a country. Seeing the Duke of Poland working hard every day makes her heart pump like crazy and in no time, she can make sure that her feeling toward him is love. She loves the man who works days and nights for the sake of his people, she loves the man who acts childishly when his children visit him, even if they are not her children; she loves the gentle atmosphere he shows to those he meets every day.
Today is an important day for Chipristina, she is going to be married today. Together, she and her beloved Jan are standing outside of the Church, where they'll be married. The protocols were long, but when her fingers are gently put on a golden ring and when they are put on the crowns and named King and Queen of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, she feels that they are the happiest moment of her life. Although she feels that her husband still doesn't love her yet but is anytime to come, who knows what will happen.
When the marriage celebration ends, they get out of the Church and move back to the palace. On the way, they are welcomed by thousands of commoners, who give them flowers and blessings. She sees several behind the wedding carriage throw golds onto the crowd, maybe that is the tradition here.
And what need to come must come, they're alone in the royal chamber. Christina knows that this moment will come, she was told by Elizabeth what they're going to do. Christina sees the mighty Duke Jan Wozniak standing shyly looking at her. She wants to take the offensive, she moves forwards and pushes him onto the bed. And then, their night begins.
