Chapter 200: The emperor's offer part 2

Haley and the rest of them were scrambling to get their soldiers and warriors to retreat in a fashionable order.

The gravity ship turned around and aimed straight at the allied Etna state forces. When its cannons were in place, they unleash hell on earth on them.

The allied army was crushed as over thirty cannons shot at them, volley after volley. Soon the rest of the mercenaries and state soldiers were either dead or fleeing with every man to himself.

Amala tried her best to shoot down the massive battleship that floated in the air.

As she released her arrow that turned into a large pillar of stone during flight, flames from the ship stopped it in its tracks.

Five people jumped off the ship. They wore bronze helmets, a large cloth with a staff that was on fire.

They were the sentinels of embers, the imperial guards and the cream of all the imperial forces. They raised their flaming staffs in the air and combined flames and created a huge fireball.

"I think we should run..." Yosef said.

The sentinels of embers unleashed a large fireball that came rolling at all of them.

"Yeah, I am running," Yosef said again

As they started to flee, Pema conjured all of his divinity and shielded as much of his body as he could with carbon. He then ran towards the fireball and was ready to stop it.

Amala yelled after him, not wanting him to sacrifice himself.

As Pema collided with the enormous fireball, he spread his hand and took the brunt of it. It still kept rolling and carving against Pema's carbon body. Parts of his torso were not fully covered in protection, causing serious wounds to him

It started to slow down as it got closer to the others. As the rolling ball of flame started to fade away, it left a badly burnt and wounded Pema on his knees, on the ground. His body was smoking, like a hot rock that had been in a furnace.

As he was too exhausted to run anymore, the sentinels of embers jumped and surrounded him. One of them took a flaming sword from underneath its robe and raised it high as to strike the final blow.

Amala aimed her arrows at them, but the other sentinels guarded and blocked any stone arrow that could come close.

As the flaming sword came down, right at the last moment a horse ran past them. The rider slashed with a large greatsword at the sentinel and cleaved him in two.

The rider then jumped off the horse and clashed with the other sentinels of embers. It was Joan.

Along with her came the black yak cavalry that charged right at the sentinels, They were forced to create a shield made from flames around them.

As the cavalry distracted the sentinels of embers, Joan picked up the wounded Pema and rode back to their friends.

"Have you seen Rufus?!" Haley asked.

Joan just waved his head.

Haley then looked into the distance onto the smokey battlefield.

~~

The emperor stood tall in front of the laying Rufus. The burnt corpse of Erik was still smoldering next to him.

"Do not think you can escape," the emperor said.

"What the hell do you want from me?" Rufus asked angrily.

~~

Berig had gotten himself up thanks to Gadaric. He was helping him limp closer to his father with one hand and one leg missing.

"You should take it easier my prince. You are badly wounded," Gadaric said.

"Shut up. I have to prove to my father that I am a worthy successor. For that I will conjure whatever divinity I have and kill that king Rufus," Berig said in a furious tone.

As they got closer they could hear now what the emperor was saying to Rufus.

"I want you to be my right hand and my most worthy and powerful tool," The emperor stated.

Rufus and Gadaric were stunned, but Berig looked like he had heard the worst news possible.

"What the hell are you talking about?" Rufus yelled.

"Look at this. Look at this destruction. For the Aesis world, this is not anything new. What it needs are order and purpose and I will give it those two," the emperor said.

Rufus looked to the battlefield. He saw severed limbs everywhere with weapons and armor spread on the ground.

Even though it looked horrible, it didn't look that much different from any of the battlefields he had seen before. The horrors of the battle didn't even bother him, truthfully he had grown accustomed to it already.

"We live in a fractured world, that doesn't have a purpose, doesn't have a god...This world needs a god and I will become one and put this world into order," the emperor said with a deep voice.

"How would becoming a god help?"

"You have not yet stepped outside of Aesis and into the universe but I have, and let me tell you one thing. We are weak. We are pathetic. That is why we fight since weak beings battle like mindless idiots, trying to prove to themselves that they are the strongest of all the weak ones. They need someone powerful to guide them so they can protect themselves from the horrors of the universe.

"If a berserk slaughter fleet would arrive in our world, we would all perish. If the dokkaebis realize they can take by force what they want from us, rather than buying it, they can and will. The only thing that can defend us would be a god, that would unite us all in the time of need and would give us purpose."

Rufus didn't know what to think.

"Join me in saving this world, Rufus," the emperor said and reached to give him a hand.
