Chapter 2: CHAPTER 1: ANALIA

"Ana, ANA! Stop singing! And get over here!"

Ugh, Susan and her tantrums about my singing. Sometimes, I want to tell her 'Deal with it!' but then, I don't want to lose my job at the bakery, do I? And unfortunately, no matter how much I want, nothing rude ever comes out of my mouth.

I look outside the room I am in and I see Susan having a fight with Mr. Derry over the counter, again. What is their problem? I let out a sigh and decide to ignore them. I'm not always going to be the one stopping their fights. Today, they resolve their problems on their own.

The cake I am baking is turning out good at least. I just need to decorate it now. As I wait for the cream to become thicker, I start cleaning the flour and start putting all the ingredients on the shelf.

The room isn't dusty, but flour is everywhere, making me sneeze every time it passes through my nose. There are two long tables, one for Mari to work on, and one for me. The shelf on our right-hand side, against the wall, is for all the different shaped breads we make.

All the loaves of bread are out of stock again. What can I say? I am such a good baker. But then, this is the only bakery in my town, Demara.

"Ana! Are you gone deaf? This is the third time I'm calling you!"

"What is it? I am trying to bake some cakes here, for your bakery!" I reply.

"Right. How long will it take? I need you to go and drop this order off. Mariana took a day off because she is sick," Susan says. She walks into the room and examines the cake I'm making. It has a moisturous, brown texture. She nods, satisfied with what she sees, and then looks at me and winces.

Susan is a pretty lady. She's in her fifties and has brown eyes, and long, curly, brown hair. Her body is slim and fit, but her mood is always, mostly, grumpy.

"You better clean yourself up, young lady. You look like you had a bath in flour. Oh, and take this order to this address once you are done with the cake. Don't be too late though. It's a kid's birthday party." She hands me the order and a piece of paper with the address on it and walks out of the room.

"Wait! Susan, where's Mari? This is her job to do, right?" I call out.

"Oh, she's sick. But I promise you that girl is lying to miss a day of work. Anyway, she didn't come so you have to do it. Put some sense into that girl if you don't want to do her work."

I stare at the cake I'm baking and decide to visit Mari after school.

Mari is my best friend. We go to high school together and work at the bakery together. I was wondering why she wasn't here. Without her, it's so quiet. She always makes this place noisy, and more fun.

I finish baking the cake after an hour or so and take the order I need to deliver to my bicycle. I put the food in the basket and look at the address again. I know my whole town really properly, but never have I heard of this house. Maybe, that's the new house everyone's been talking about.

I get on the bicycle and start pedaling. All the people wave at me as I pass. I wave back and give them my 'million dollar smile'. Everyone is so friendly and kind, in my sweet, small town.

I soon reach the place. The house is called 'The Alopitayas'. I get off my bicycle and knock and a small boy, no more than six years old, opens the door. Mmmm, why did small children have to look so adorable? He sees me and calls out to his mom. She comes to the door and the small boy, obviously shy, goes back inside. We both greet each other and she pays me. Then she says thank you and closes the door. Now she was a very quiet lady.

I pedal to Mari's house to check on her. I don't knock, just enter and go to her room. And there she is, her blonde hair tied in two pigtails, mouth pouting and her blue eyes glued to the computer screen writing something on PowerPoint. I wish I looked that pretty.

"Aaaaah! Ana, you scared the hell outa' me. What ya doin' here?" And there comes her lazy accent. "Mari, you're sick. You are supposed to be in bed sleeping, not writing a book on Make-up." She needs to learn how to take care of herself.

"Yeah. It was actually just a headache. Now it's cool. Ya know how my mom is. She didn't let me go to work or school." Yeah, right, at least her parents care for her.

"How are things at school, Class Pres?"

I am the class president and a topper in my studies. I'd rather be a nerd, than work at McDonald's later in life. Plus, being class Pres, everyone listens to you, and you're not unpopular. It makes life easier.

"It's okay. There was an issue with Kylie and Alex, and Kylie made a big deal about it."

"Woah, you mean the two 'used – to - be' love birds?" she asks.

"Yep. Alex dropped some food on Kylie by mistake. You can even see it in his face, he was innocent. But Kylie didn't want to listen and says he did it on purpose because of their break-up. She says she wants 'justice'. The girl is crayzyyyy."

And we kept on chatting, gossiping, and babbling, on and on. Soon, it was getting dark, so we said our byes, and I left for home. It feels good to have someone to talk to.

The sky has an orangish and pinkish color now. I'm not able to see the Sun, because I'm heading in the opposite direction, but I'm sure it's looking beautiful as always.

The view never gets old.

I park my bicycle in our backyard once I reach home. My home isn't exactly big, but it has two rooms, a kitchen, a living room, and all the basic things you need in a house. From the outside, the brown colour is fading and becoming peach. The windows are closed but the curtains open, just as I left them in the morning.

I open the door and switch on the lights of my house. Of course, no one's home. Let me guess, my good-for-nothing mom is drinking at a bar and crying over her problems and my careless dad is with his new wife somewhere.

I plop down on my couch and close my eyes. My legs hurt. And then, my tummy rumbles like a washing machine when it is washing clothes.

I didn't have lunch. I get up and make some pancakes for myself. After that, I watch the movie, "Back to the future", once again.

I have access to a lot of things on my computer that many people don't. I've learned computer science from my dad's colleague and now I'm able to hack into different computers. It's fun actually. I could be the next criminal like this.

I smile at the thought and continue watching.

It's eleven o'clock and still, none of them are home.

Well, no need to punish myself so time for bed. I close my laptop and head upstairs to my room.

My room is the coziest place in the world for me. The posters and drawings I made hanging on the wall, it's not too messy, but it's not too clean either. It's small, with just a single bed and a small study table but that's what makes it even better.

I start looking in my cupboard for my pajamas when I hear a deep and hoarse voice behind me.

"You know very well how to hide. A small town. Interesting. But you can't hide from me."

I turn around, ready for a fight, but I'm only able to stare into light blue eyes before it all goes black.
