Chapter 56: Entering the Compound

After our meeting with Yuri ended, Rogue and I swiftly grabbed some food from a street stall and climbed up on top of the roof to eat in solitude and look over all the info we had on the upcoming raid.

All the info we have on the enemy comes from the mouth of the one cop on the inside that revealed the base to us in the first place. Still, Yuri had specifically added a note for us saying that while the info he gives 'should' be trustworthy, it is always best to assume we are being betrayed and lured into a trap.

The so-called compound the Manfredi family is using was once a small factory used to manufacture fishing boats, but as it has been standing empty and dormant for a while, the Maggia comfortably made it their own base of operations. Right now, it was heavily defended by dozens of the family's men, all armed with top-of-the-art weaponry that they should never have been able to get in the first place.

In order to breach and clear out this base with minimal damage, the police decided not to be stingy or cut any corners unnecessarily. Instead, they seemed to have gone all in on this operation.

To start off with, there are a couple of snipers set all around the compound that are cleared to shoot anyone they can with tranquilizer darts. Of course, the police aren't going to start indiscriminately killing anyone before they are even shot at. The key point here is 'before they are shot at' as all officers have been permitted to kill as long as a firefight breaks out, and as that is what they are expecting, other than the snipers, all other troops just brought live ammunition.

After the snipers hopefully manage to lessen the enemy numbers by immobilizing a few of the maggia members, the rest of the police force would systematically breach through the main gate and take down the base quick and easy as long as everything goes perfectly.

Yuri, of course, has no hope in everything going according to plan, which is precisely why she took the initiative to invite me here as a backup.

I was given the location of the forward operating base for the police in case I wanted to go ahead and meet everyone before the raid began, but for a few reasons, mainly some cops being openly racist against mutants like Rogue, I decided not to bother with that and instead just get directly to the raid.

Finished with looking over the files, Rogue and I downed the rest of our food and set out toward the compound location. On the way there, I gave Yuri a call and told her that we would be going in ahead of everyone else to clear out whoever we could, and she promised her snipers wouldn't take a shot at us unless they wanted to lose their jobs.

I kindly recommended she remind them that if they do take a shot at us, then losing their jobs would be the least of their worries, and eavesdropping on the comms channels, it seemed the message got across well.

Trust me. I would happily turn them into my XP.

Rogue and I reached the edge of the Manfredi compound roughly 15 minutes before the designated start time of the raid. Due to it being early December, the sky turned dark very early in the day, granting us darkness that we utilized to sneak into the base undetected.

The base was really heavily guarded as right away we noticed some sniper-wielding people sitting on roof edges as well as on top of some makeshift towers. If any regular civilian walked past this place and looked over, then everything would be pretty open to see. How are they getting away with this even?

Marvel universe New York City is weird.

Rogue, while trained in using her web-shooters and wall climbing, wasn't as great or experienced in stealth as I was, so for the time being, I just had her stay in the cover of the dark on top of the roof of the main building while I skillfully jumped around the compound unnoticed taking down snipers without anyone being the wiser.

Anyone of the enemies anyways, as the police surely saw me, mainly cause they were warned beforehand. Listening in on their comms channels was great fun.

"Spiderman has entered the area. Everyone, hold your fire until captain Watanabe orders otherwise."

"Is my scope foggy, or am I seeing double? I swear I just saw two people climb over the walls."

"You're right, Bob. I also see two of them! I think the second one is a woman, though, so maybe Spiderwoman?"

"This is getting out of hand! Now there are two of them! Is Spiderman really trying to put us, honest cops, out of business?"

"No, I think it's fine. I heard on the radio that the woman is actually one of the good mutants and today is the first time she has been seen with Spiderman."

"One of the good mutants? Please, they are all animals and should be put down. Should I just shoot her while I have her in my scop- MGHMGHMMM?"

"Hey, what happened to Steve? Wait, shit, there a web cocoon hanging from the roof of where he was positioned."

"Shit, we're being listened to. Stop talking shit unless you wanna take a fast track to the grave."

While listening to their chatter, I cleared out all of the snipers I could see, all without ever being noticed. Down on the ground, I could see a good 30 men walking around with rifles and two really buff dudes carrying miniguns on them.

While I would love to clear them out completely, I ended up coming to the conclusion that it would be impossible to do it all stealthily, especially with the heavys walking around. I instead just ended up reporting everything I had seen and done to Yuri before heading back to Rogue on top of the of manufactury.

I find her looking down inside the building through the skylights on the roof that are missing windows. As I land on the roof, she spots me and signals her hand to beckon me over to her.

As I crouch down next to her to look down inside the building, she whispers to me. "See all those shelves with the sealed boxes on them? They must be the guns they are storing here."

I nod, inspecting everything inside. "The green ones must be military boxes and the white ones from Sable International." There are also a few guys patrolling between the shelves inside the building but compared to the outside, the number of people here is laughable.

"It's the white boxes that are weird to me," Rogue says, and I look over at her waiting for her to explain further. "The white boxes all seem to contain tech parts rather than guns. While I was waiting here, I saw some people come over and open some of the white boxes as if looking for specific parts before bringing two boxes further into the base."

"I wonder what they are using them for," I whisper and glance at the time in my system window.

"We have five more minutes before the police begin their operation. Let's go in and try to take out as many people as possible before things get heated in here." I say, and the both of us enter through the broken skylight into the building, crawling on the ceiling where no one thinks to look.

Note: Been a bit busy this week helping my family renovate an old house again. Hopefully, another chapter tomorrow, but I can't promise anything.
