Chapter 2: The first signs

It had seemed so simple; it had seemed so harmless but still he regretted it

Do you know what he did that cost him so much? What has left Eadwulf laying on the ground holding his entrails in with one hand, staring at the fading light of the lanterns as the holders of those lights get further and further away and listening to an ominous growling that seems to get closer and closer?

He Trusted his friends

Well, he thought they were his friends but considering they left him here one would guess a re-evaluation of their relationship is needed because last he checked friends were supposed to help you out of a ditch not through you into one!

When Eadwulf had gotten out of bed this morning a Rent was the last place he expected to be. He had gotten out of bed like usual stared at his poster of the various motivational reasons why he should get out of bed

Which was obviously a cruel joke considering the owners of the orphanage new just how little reasons he had for even staying alive other than simply not wanting to die when they put it on his wall.

As Eadwulf got prepared for the day he contemplated whether he should even go to the academy or not, what reason was their unless you enjoyed being seen as a punching bag. The academy was created to help in the development of youngsters and just like all the other academies had a hierarchy purely decided by one thing

Eon Based Abilities

Each member of the academy from staff to students had some form of power given to them by the ingestion of Eon hence the schools purpose being the training of students abilities and their control over them

And what was Eadwulfs ability?

He was durable. Not like his skin was tougher or his bones don't break, no that would be to useful, no instead he had a faster than usual healing factor and didn't feel pain. But even then his healing factor had limits.

If he got a scratch it would heal in a day but if he lost a limb it was gone for good.

These abilities had made him a literal and figurative punching bag during training and his placing in the ability classing of C. sure his abilities could be worse or he could not have abilities but what he didn't have was a future

See the way the academy work was that if you are one of the few chosen to serve a Drey then your future is pretty much set. You will live as a maid or butler for the rest of your life in relative comfort and accompany your master wherever they go whether it's into a Rent or around the house.

On the other hand, is what most want to avoid myself included, those who are the majority not chosen by the Drey youth must become soldiers for the period of ten years as part of the contract they signed in order to gain access to Eon.

Should you become a soldier you will likely be involved in the exploration of Rents or the patrolling of the border of Eshax, both are extremely dangerous if you are below B rank ability, which he is.

As Eadwulf began his walk to the academy he ran across his friends Billy, William and Chris.

Billy and William Tanice were twins who were identical with matching black hair and grey eyes, the only real difference was that Billy was about an inch taller than William, but they also made a point to not stand next to each other, so it was harder to tell them apart. They were both rank C and could had increased strength and increased speed respectively as these were relatively common abilities.

Chris or Christopher Valdez was the leader of our little ensemble and the only B rank among them, he had blonde hair and green eyes with a face that represented his noble family background that had a long history of being users of wind related abilities which he of course had with the ability to create weapons out of thin air.

And then there's Eadwulf he was the smallest of the group with grey hair and pinkish red eyes that were a result of mutation that occurred during his Eon eating and was as mentioned a C rank with a slightly abnormal healing factor and no ability to feel pain

"Hey guys!" he said jogging over to them

"Hey Ead" responded Chris with his signature smile and then gesturing to his watch said "I think we need to run"

"Yep!" the twins yelled as they began running

"Hey wait up!" Eadwulf began running after them

"Last one there's getting their food eaten!"

"But I'm always last"

"Then get faster shrimp! "Chris called back

As they ran towards the school suddenly, they felt a quake in the ground

"Ahhh!" Billy and William yelped as the tripped over each other which he normally would have laughed at if the blood Hadn't drained from his face leaving him even more pail than usual.

"Was that…?" Chris looked at me with full seriousness doing a double check just to make sure he wasn't imagining it.

He wasn't

"A Rent!" Eadwulf replied trying to keep the tremor out his voice "and by the feel of that tremor it's going to take out a block at least!"

"Sigh… well you know the drill" Chris looked at me and nodded at him and the group turned back the opposite direction back to where they had come from, running as fast as they could towards the orphanage.

When a Rent happens it's not just a small portal that appears, no it's a giant vortex of interdimensional energy that can take out whole blocks of cities as it drags them to whatever dimension it is connected to.

For section 15 the city section that Eadwulf lived in the emergency gathering spot for civilians was the orphanage that he called home

If only he knew this was the worst place to go
