Chapter 3: Another universe

Seeing that the situation had calmed down, Coulson regained control of his emotions and decided to resume acting as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D, dealing with the most imminent threat, which was the person in black armor with white lights in place.

"First, can you tell us who you are and how you ended up here?" Coulson asked.

Logan, still confused by this new environment and people, took a defensive posture in response.

"And why should I tell you? As far as I know, you're armed criminals. The only reason I let you keep your weapons is because they're as threatening to me, your Majesty and Lady Sif as a child's water pistol." Logan replied.

Surprised that the stranger was not at all intimidated or willing to cooperate, Coulson stood still, trying to assess the situation before attempting a new approach. Then he remembered the respect he showed towards Skye and Sif, he glanced at Sif with the intention for her to take the lead in the situation, given that Skye's status was still unknown.

Sif understood and nodded, then approached Logan with a calmer and friendlier demeanor, as she would in a diplomatic mission from Asgard.

"You are in a base of an organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D, which are guardians of Midgard, also known as Earth, third-class protector Logan." said Sif.

"S.H.I.E.L.D?" Logan said with a weak voice of surprise, as if the revelation deeply shook him.

Logan then decided to look around to see if the rest of the place offered more clues to understand the situation. He stopped and fixed his gaze on a person, Barbara Morse.

"Wait, you... Mockingbird? But you're without your suit." said Logan.

Bobbi was surprised and afraid that the person who appeared out of nowhere acted as if he knew her, but his words hinted that he perceived her differently from how he knew her. She looked at Mack, the only person there who could truly help her, but his gaze was too focused on the stranger, his fists clenched with anger, and his body rigid as if he were ready to attack at any moment. So she decided to see how the situation unfolded before trying to learn more about how the stranger knew her.

Logan then looked around and recognized another person he knew as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D's scientific division, Jemma Simmons.

"Jemma... but you're still completely human, so I really am in a S.H.I.E.L.D. base." said Logan, but his speech became softer and weaker as he finished the sentence.

Logan's gaze then swept the environment. He didn't recognize anyone else, and the place offered no further clues as to where he was. His face turned to a wall that had nothing extraordinary, and he pulled up a nearby chair, sitting down and resting his arms on the table in front of him.

Although all actions were done extremely calmly, Logan's mind was more active than ever, pondering the situation he found himself in.

'The old bald man acting as the leader here, Lady Sif saying this is a S.H.I.E.L.D. base on Earth and not knowing what New Asgard is, Daisy Johnson acting like a scared child, Mockingbird not recognizing me, and Jemma without her cybernetic implants. All of this points to the possibility that I'm in another universe, and if that's true... I'm really screwed and will never be able to return to my original universe.'

When Logan sat down and remained still, Coulson, realizing he was lost in his own thoughts, ordered agents Mackenzie, Hunter, Jemma, and Fitz to take Vin-Tak to the medical wing. Some were ordered to clean up the broken glass shards and isolate the area.

After giving orders to the remaining agents, Coulson approached Sif, Skye, and May to discuss the current situation.

"For now, understanding who this person is and how they ended up here is the priority. Let's deal with this first, then we'll resolve the situation with Vin-Tak, and when that's settled, we'll deal with Skye's condition." said Coulson.

Skye, May, and Sif nodded in agreement.

"Skye and Sif, this person seems to know and respect you, so you can approach with me. May, you and Bobbi will stand by in case he becomes hostile." said Coulson.

Bobbi, Sif, Skye, and May nodded in agreement, and the rest of the agents carried out their assigned tasks.

Coulson waited a bit until everyone in the headquarters calmed down and was in the position to execute the protocol created for possible containment of a hostile individual in the base.

Bobbi and May took positions around the room to subdue the stranger if necessary, while Coulson, Skye, and Sif sat at the table with Logan.

Coulson tried again to start a conversation with Logan.

"Are you okay? You've been standing still there for a while." said Coulson.

"Yes, I'm fine. I'm just trying to accept the fact that I'll never be able to go home again or even know what happened to my friends." said Logan.

"What do you mean you can't go home? Talk to us about how you ended up here. Maybe we can find a way to get you home." said Coulson.

"You don't understand. My universe has already suffered an incursion attempt, and we've taken measures to prevent it from happening again." Logan interrupted.

"Incursion? What's that?" asked Coulson.

Logan then looked at the confused people at the table.

"Lady Sif? You don't know either?" Logan asked.

"No." Sif said.

"This universe must be very weak if not even an Asgardian general knows what an incursion is." Logan then looked at Coulson.

"You probably is the leader of this base, since you keep trying to take the lead, call the head of the base's science division because I'm going to explain a little about the multiverse and concepts that may not exist or are still theories on this Earth, and I don't want to have to explain multiple times. Lady Sif might understand a bit more since Asgardian technology is far ahead of Earth's, but maybe not, after all, she's a warrior, not a scholar." said Logan.

Coulson immediately thought of Fitz, but he still didn't fully trust his mental state, so he called Jemma into the room.

After Jemma arrived and sat down, Logan turned to her and began the explanation.

"Okay, what I know didn't come from science books but from history books, so I won't know the physical principles or formulas for anything, understood? But I know what happened." said Logan.

Jemma nodded briefly.

"So let's start from the beginning. Can you tell me how the universe began?" said Logan.

"You mean the big bang?" said Jemma.

"Yes, do you know what caused it?" said Logan.

"There's still no scientific evidence of what caused the big bang." said Jemma.

"Well then, I'll start from there. In the beginning, the universe was an endless void until a sentient being emerged. This being wandered the universe in search of another sentient being for a long time without finding any, eventually unable to bear the loneliness, the being decided to kill itself. However, the being knew that eventually there would be more sentient life forms than itself, so it decided to split its essence into seven parts, and when it killed itself, the explosion generated caused the big bang." said Logan.

Jemma listened attentively, but she was still skeptical about the truth of what was being said and continued to listen to the explanation.

"The explosion was so powerful that it created two universes. This one we're in contains six parts of the essence of this being, and one part of the essence ended up in the other universe. The shock of the explosion caused the parts of the essence to collide with each other and created the universe as we know it today. As the being predicted, new sentient life forms eventually emerged, and eventually, some of these life forms managed to find one of the six parts of this being's essence and discovered in it an infinite source of power," said Logan.

Coulson already imagined how many new threats would be discovered by the end of Logan's explanation, Jemma listened curiously, restraining herself from asking questions. Skye seemed bored, and Sif had an apprehensive look upon realizing that if all six objects that were significant power sources were indeed referring to the Infinity Stones.

"Soon it was discovered that in each part of this being's essence, there was an infinite source of power. Due to the unique nature of these objects and their resemblance to precious stones, they were named the Infinity Stones. As expected, someone eventually realized that if one stone is an infinite power source, then by gathering all of them, it might be possible to obtain absolute power," Logan said.

Coulson felt that the threats that emerged by the end of the explanation would only grow larger, and Sif seemed more apprehensive after confirming that it was indeed about the Infinity Stones.

"Every time news of one stone appeared, news of the others followed shortly after. It was as if they were trying to reunite. So, after some time, a being managed to gather them all. But when attempting to use their power, it realized there was still a missing piece. This being then used the power of the stones to pave the way for the last one. Well, the inhabitants of the other universe weren't exactly friendly when they were invaded, and after realizing that there was more than one Infinity Stone, they also fought to obtain the rest." Logan said.

The story began to pique Skye's interest. Sif, who loved tales of battle, was eager to hear the rest. Coulson couldn't measure the level of threat posed by the gems anymore, so he decided to wait until the end of the story and evaluate it afterward. Jemma's curiosity about the scientific part of what was being said had already surpassed its peak. If she measured the time to ask the questions in her head, they would be there for days, months, or even years.

Throughout the explanation, May and Bobbi did not move or show any reaction, focusing only on the mission given.

In the other room, watching everything on the monitor, Fitz paid attention to everything being said while taking notes feverishly. Hunter was open-mouthed, completely lost, and Mack remained with a furious expression.
