Chapter 107: Assuaging doubts.

As people began to line up for the surgery, the Yangban leader pushed his way to the front of the line and slammed his palm onto the table.

I had to physically stop myself from groaning as he bleated the same old charade.

You know what. No. I am groaning.

"Let me guess. You want me to join your little crew of misfits over there too?"

"Yes. You are a traitor to the Union, our most glorious nation-"

I cut him off.

"Hold on buster. I'm not even a citizen of your stupid union or whatever. How can I be a traitor?" I asked, intrigued.

"Everyone is part of the C.U.I. Some REBEL SCUM just don't want to admit it yet!" He said, earning dirty glares from everyone around.

I raised an eyebrow and looked him over.

"That's certainly a unique worldview." I laughed.

"But no. I'm afraid I'll have to refuse. If there's nothing else, I have people to help. See yourself out." I said, shooing him away.

"The C.U.I. is not to be denied, traitor!" He threatened.

"Excuse me. Are you deaf? Or blind? Or are you just plain stupid? Did you not see what I did to those two. I mean Pretender is still lying dead over there. You need only look." I pointed out.

"Do not compare us to rebel scum, we are made of better wood!" He said, ordering his troupe to surround me.

"You know that proverb doesn't translate well to English." I mocked, leaning back in my chair.

"I'll give you one last chance to leave. Just go. Walk away. No one needs to die." I offered.

"You are the one that's going to die, GameBreaker!" The man shouted in my face.

I sighed.

"Fuck it. If you guys are so eager to win the Darwin award, who am I to stop you?

I really tried, y'know. It's not like I'm asking you guys to worship the ground I walk on. All I asked for was some basic civil decency.

But you couldn't even do that much?!

Even Offee would understand at this point. Hell, she might have even gutted you herself.

This is just natural selection.

Computer, arm the matter annihilation array. Wipe them out." I said.

"You did just call yourself a god." Paige teased.

"It's a figure of speech. I don't actually think I'm a god. Yet." I replied.

"Don't igno-" The man said in his thick chinese accent, when he was cut short by beams raining down from the sky.

Curiously though while the others died, one boy stuck around, his body reversing to a point before he was dead, automatically.

He looked around, and scratched his head looking around before it clicked to him.

He let out a sigh of relief.

"Perdition, I suppose?" I asked.

Perdition was one of the Travelers, with the power to turn anything he touched back to the state it was in a few seconds prior.

He had been kicked out of the group after an argument, and then kidnapped by the Yangban. He had a whole story. Poor sod.

I felt pity for him, when I had read his story originally.

"Yes how did you know?" He asked.

"Doesn't matter. Wanna go home?" I asked.

"You can send me back?" He asked, hopeful.

"Yes. At a price. You leave your shard behind. How does that sound?"

"That's all? Deal, bro. Fuck. It's been so long. I tried everything. I had almost lost hope. If you'd asked me for my left nut for a way home I would have given it." He laughed, relieved.

"Good. You're on first." I gestured at a droid setting up a tent behind me.

Perdition nodded and made to walk in when Panacea stopped him.

"Wait. Don't you want to be sure the surgery works before you go under? He didn't even ask for your permission?"

"Don't know, don't care." He said, shrugging her hand off, and walked in.

"Really Panacea? You want to interfere with this now?" I asked.

"I just want people to know what they're signing up for. That girl you operated on is still in the wheelchair, isn't she?" Panacea pointed at Noelle behind me.

"Physiotherapy takes time, Panacea. And you all saw the livestream.

But sure. Why don't you go and take a look at Noelle and then you tell me if the surgery works or not. Noelle, you okay with that, right?" I asked.

"Yes. I'm just happy to not be a monster. Now if you could just send me home..." She said.

"Yeah. Just let Perdition get his shard taken out, then I'll send you two back together." I replied.

Panacea kneeled beside Noelle and grabbed her hand.

"Do I have your permission to check you?" She asked.

Noelle just shrugged and Panacea took it as a yes, using her power to check on Noelle's condition.

"So, what great conspiracy did you unearth miss Panacea?" I teased.

"Okay maybe there's nothing wrong with the procedure but it's still better to check." Panacea excused, turning back to Noelle, "Do you want me to heal your legs?"

"No." Noelle said, "I don't want anything to do with superpowers anymore. I'll take the long way out, thank you very much."

"If you insist..." Panacea relented, walking back into the crowd.

"Can I go next?" Gully asked, pointing at another droid that had finished setting up it's tent.

"Sure. Actually, do me a favour, will you?" I said, shuffling through my pockets and pulled out an injector gun.

"Let's give Noelle her legs back."

I knelt down at Gully's feet and pricked her legs for the briefest moment.

"What's that?" She asked.

"Muscle memory. I took a month's worth of it from your legs." I said, walking up to Noelle.

"Noelle, lift up your skirt a bit will you. This will give your legs a crash course in walking."

"Any excuse to look under skirts, huh?" String Theory teased.

I just gave her a middle finger.

"Don't you have a Gigolo to hire?" I shot back, injecting the liquid into Noelle's leg, causing them to buff up a bit, her thighs gaining some definition.

"Someone's a sore loser...." She giggled.

I could almost feel Paige's glare burn into my back at that.

Ugh. Why do I only get yanderes?

"Try walking now." I said, ignoring Paige pouting in the corner.

"Can I really walk? With just that?" Noelle asked, confused.

"Why don't you try it?" I suggested, giving Noelle a helping hand off the wheelchair as she took her first steps in years.

"I can walk? I can walk!"

Noelle's eyes glittered with joy, as I let go of her and she walked on her own, slowly at first, step by step before brealing into a run around the area, her face gleaming.

I smiled smugly, and turned to look at Panacea. Her eyes followed Noelle with disbelief before she spotted my look and rolled her eyes.

Yeah. Roll your eyes.

That's all you can do.

I chuckled.

Just then the flaps to the first tent olifted and Perdition walked out, rubbing his head.

"Is it wierd that the inside of my head's itching a bit?" He asked.

"Nah. It'll go down in a bit." I assured him, before pulling out my portal gun.

"Noelle!" I called out, as she turned and I opened a portal.

"One portal to Earth Aleph. All passengers aboard!" I said, gesturing at it like a ticketmaster.

Perdition chuckled, and walked into it, stopping halfway, having confirmed that it really was home.

He turned back to look at me, grateful tears in his eyes.

"Thanks man. I mean it."

I nodded and he nodded back stepping through, disappearing into the portal.

"Yeah....uh...thanks. Without your help, I'd have never dared to go back, even if we'd found a way. I'm not good with words.....so..just thanks." Noelle said, coming up to the portal.

She smiled and bowed before leaping in.

I closed the portal and mentally ticked off that part of my plan.

Now to just get the rest of these patients done.

I looked over at the crowd, and counted.

Some 9000 people. Maybe more.

This wasn't going to end in a day, it seems. This will be a long week.
