Chapter 2: Find Me Part 2 (Volume I)

She opened the door for me but as I tried my first step, bad luck wished me some luck again, I fell on my knees. Luckily, my hands saved my face from being planted on the white tiled floor.

I heard Jo sigh, "It's better to happen here than out there."

I stood up and followed her outside.

"Miss Valoria?" The same guy from a while ago greeted us as we stepped out of the elevator. "You're next. Just in time." He smiled. I used my curse again to hear the people in the wide hall which is just on the other side of the wall I'm leaning to. I heard the crowd whispering about how swiftly he played the violin; some were also dismayed at how he acted on stage and some were satisfied with his performance. I heard Yu's footsteps stepping off from the stage until he reached backstage.

"Good play Mister Yu. Miss Valoria?" a woman in a black suit led the way for me.

"I wish you some better luck!" Jo waved.

I took a deep breath before finally walking my way towards the stage. I walked swiftly towards the piano in the center of the stage, knowing my parents, they'll probably watch every move I make. I sat on the stool and breathed deeply as I gained concentration and let my fingers do their work on the keys.

I press softly on the first key as an entrance to a mellow yet strong piece written by Mozart. With my right hand, I started to play the mellow part, and on my left the strong beat as they harmonize with each other. In this part of the music, I'm no longer here. It's the body that keeps moving but my mind is somewhere else. My mind is listening to what I am hearing now. The beautiful sound that the strands from behind these keys create, my mind dances with it. This is why I love my curse, it makes me join the music, and it makes me listen to music as I create them in each press, despite giving me headaches every night. This is the only time where even my bad luck becomes one with me and helps me ease the moment. I opened my eyes, not realizing that I closed it while performing, and looked at the audience as I stood up and bowed down. I heard nothing from my parents, they never pointed out anything good with me, but I heard a lot from the rest of the audience, some good comments and constructive criticisms which I take note of in my head to be better next time.

Jo greeted me from backstage, "That was good" she did a mini clap.

"Break a leg in there," I said. She winked and took the stage.

Jo and I are eating our favorite dessert in our favorite café near our university.

"We did great," Jo said before taking another bite from her croissant. "When is the next competition?" I asked.

"On the 26th. We are given two weeks to prepare."

"The further we get the shorter preparation time they give."

"The professionals do it on the spot." She took a sip on her latte, "Heard anything from your parents?"

"Not a word. I didn't even see them after the contest either." I bit on my chocolate-filled doughnut.

"As always." She fixed her sweater and stood up, "I'm going to buy another croissant."

I just nodded. I took a sip on my Frappuccino and listened to the busy city outside. How am I going to sleep this way? Just hearing these cars make me irritated already. I rubbed my temple trying to settle things on my mind as if it really is going to work.

Jo went back with two croissants on a plate, "I can't help myself." She smiled like a kid.

I laughed, "I thought you needed to diet because your brother is getting married next week and you need to fit in your dress."

She immediately dropped the croissant back on the plate and gave it to me. "Never mind," she said disappointingly. She took a sip on her latte instead while looking outside the window. "I wonder who's destined to be with me. I want a decent-looking guy of course. Someone who could play piano as well as you. I think that will be good. Then we could play together. Or maybe someone who's good with the violin? Then we'll be a perfect combo for competitions." She chuckled at her own thoughts. "What about you?" she asked me.

"I actually didn't think of that. I mean, it hasn't made my mind yet." 'I can't choose who to marry. My parents will.' I reminded myself.

"Oh yeah…I forgot. You don't get to choose…" she bit her lip. "Look at that guy, he walks funny," trying to change the subject she tried to make fun of the guy, which is not her by the way. She's nicer than that.

"I think I need to rest already." Finishing my Frappuccino, I stood up and took my bag.

"Wait for me!" She took the croissants from the plate and stuck the other one on her mouth while still holding the other.

I opened the light from my dorm and threw myself on my bed. If I ever get to choose, "I want someone who'll cope up with my bad luck." I laughed at myself. As if.

I lay on my side and propped my head on my arm. "Whoever comes, comes." I don't get to choose anyway, why bother. Not realizing that I had fallen asleep, I opened my eyes only to be blinded by the sun shining through the window. I immediately reached for the curtain and closed it. I lay on my side and took my phone from my bag to check my schedule for the day. "Music class starts at 8. I only have 20 minutes to fix myself. Ugh." I just woke up and I'm in a bad state already. I immediately ran inside the bathroom and fixed myself.
