Chapter 22: A teacher can only guide the path but you have to walk on your own
Elder Hughes was forced to see her in a new light. He thought that she was just a spoiled brat. But she had scars buried deep in her heart. He had to put aside his prejudice against her. Though elder only used a small percentage of his power but she was able to win against him. And he could sense that she was not simple at all.
"This Elder Elve accepts the greeting of princess Athanasia. Princess I hope to see you tomorrow", with that he left as the wind blowed. They were all confused but thankfully butler explained that she would likely become a trainee. Athy had a graceful smile on her face as her troubles were worth it she thought. She had kind of impressed the elder. And to get his approval, it did not seem too difficult.
Next day early in the morning, Athy went to elder Hughes. He was taking a morning walk in the garden. The fresh air was good to breathe. It was such a beautiful view that it gave Athanasia a sense of relief as she felt her shoulders lighter. She basked in the pure sunlight and took deep breaths. Elder heard her and after a moment turned to her. She greeted him again in a polite manner but the haughtiness could be seen in her eyes. A look that suited that confidant but beautiful appearance oddly. If it was someone else elder Hughes would have felt offended but he wasn't. But his expressions were unreadable. Athy was confused because she didn't know how to start a conversation with an elder of this type. But she gathered her courage and stated:
"I assume that I have passed the test last night".
A sly smile appeared on elder's face. He countered. "Princess what gave you an impression that you have passed the test?"
"What do you mean by that elder Hughes?"
Athy asked in a confused tone.
"You are still lacking to be acknowledged as my disciple".
It's been over a month since I left home. After all of this time... What am I getting? Is this a joke. Why?? Athy's mind was filled with these kind of thingss he calmed down herself and asked.
"What do I need to do to get acknowledged by you?"
"Princess, the answer lies in front of you".
Athy had a blank face.
He continued...
" Princess, you have a affinity for every element. And you must be wondering how did I know. It's quite simple as your father can use fire and ice magic and your mother could use water and earth magic. But during the combat you used wind magic along with ice".
Hearing that Athy felt like she was poured buckets of cold water over her head over and over again. In order to win she accidentally used wind magic in front of the grandmaster of wind magic. Her expressions showed her hostility towards the elder.
"You don't have to be warry of me as I don't want to do anything with Empire's princess".
Athy took a deep breath and she knew what she should do in this situation.
She bend down to her knees and gave the elder a knowtow that is only given to a parent and a lifetime teacher. She knew he was the wisest wizard on the continent and it would be foolish to let go of this person. She wanted to get aquainted with this person.
Elder Hughes was surprised as he had heard about the circumstances of princess Athanasia. Maybe this is the first time the proud princess ever bowed her head to anyone.
"Elder Hughes, please accept me as your disciple and guide me through this life".
Elder Hughes saw the determination in her eyes and deep down the scars that she had to endure in this young age. Despite all that she had a strong heart and a will of steal. He had observed her movements all the way from her home. Never once she required others protection rather she had protected others. Elder saw Diana and Augustus in her. He thought he would feel pity for her circumstances but rather he was looking forward to the future ahead and her growth. Last night he sensed the presence of dragon in this girl, he was taken a back by the blood list she had shown, the only reason why he was defeated. But for the time being he decided not to pursue that matter.
"Princess Athanasia from today's onward you are the only lifetime desciple of this old man".
Athanasia's a sunny smile on her face as she gave a simple bow to her teacher.
After what thought was impossible she finally had become an official student. From that day Athy's day to day life was busy from dawn to dusk. She resided in the elder's house. Her accommodation was simple but it had everything she needed. She sent letters to her home and grandpa. She was taught about magic and the reason why it exists.
Magic is the ability of a person to use mana and mana is a part of life force. Every living being has it in it. But only with a sufficient amount of mana they can use it to manipulate the mana present in others. Affinity is one's ability to use which kind of mana they can use.
There are four basic elements: water, earth, fire and wind. Special elements are ice and lightning. And the rare forms are light and dark elements. Light element users are only 2-3 in history of mankind but dark element is practiced by demons and their king demon king, the devil(the strongest demon).
"Teacher, what is the difference between the light and dark element?"
"A good question indeed. But what are your thoughts on it?" Elder asked.
"I think the light element is not an element but a combination of elements. And dark magic is fusion of elements but due to the different technique it is called dark element".
"An intelligent answer that is. But how did you reached that conclusion I don't remember teaching you any of that".
"I was reading the history of the most powerful wizards. Each of them could use the basic elements and a rare element. So if there is a way to fuse a of the elements than it can form Light element. As the light is also a fusion of different colors. But since dark element is welded by demons I could not find anything useful".
"Athanasia, it is a secret that only the grand wizards of magic tower know and you found the truth on your own with limited knowledge. I don't know if I should be surprised or nervous". Elder laughed heartily.
After Athy's arrival, he had been more lively. She was never failed to amaze him. He only guessed that she could use all the elements but she can actually use all 6 elements. It has never happened once in the history of mankind. Only the great first emperor of Aurelius family could use all. But he thought it was a mere exaggeration. If people knew that she had inherited Aurelius blood just like his son, she would become a great threat to all the people if she is not guided properly. As people tend to be fearful of unknown. He was glad she accepted her his disciple.
"Yes you're right princess, it's a hypotheses but if it true then you can also weild light magic. And about dark magic there is my hypothesis that as mostly lower demons use fire elements but higher demons can use variety of elements. But only the few demons can use dark elements and dark element does not need the condition of all elements. The technique they use is only passed down in their families. So we are not aware of it".
Athy was quite curious about these demons but Elder didn't dwell on that topic. For the time being she decided not to pursue the topic.
A year has passed since she came to Alvalor.
She had advanced a lot. After her mother's death her advancement in magic was halted. But now she is back on the track.
The strength of mana users is divided into levels.
Beginer, intermediate, advance, master, elite grandmaster, Saint.
On the continent there are a handful of grandmasters. Her father was included in that list. Her teacher was a grandmaster too. After a person reaches to advance level they can decide whether they want to continue the journey of being a wizard as advancement of magic is too difficult from there. It takes years to reach the next stage. So many people chose the knight route and use their magic along with sword art. Her grandfather had also become the greatest sword man and the grandmaster of sword (the highest position a knight could ever dream of). Only understanding of both magic and sword can take you there. With each level, there is increase in understanding of magic as the mind also become clear and broad.
That is why Athanasia never slack off her sword training. She studied magic, practiced it and even went to do adventures in forest. She fought monsters. As his teacher said only a real life death situation can make someone advance in magic.
