Chapter 37: Legends die (part 2)

Tank stands beside Rat firing arrows with the younger boy. Tank's lack of accuracy doesn't impede him whatsoever as the zombies have surrounded the thick wall in an ocean of death and rot. "By the way don't kill the zombies close to the wall, it will create a pile that the zombies will climb." Riley says over the radio breathlessly. "You okay brother?" Tank asks. "Killing zombies while doing repairs good exercise don't recommend it." Riley answers quickly. Tank glances at the frightened children behind him clumsily go about filling the van and truck with the essentials of the clan. "I know you are all scared and it doesn't look good right now but we have been in the shit before and we always conquer it and grow more powerful this is just another day for the 13 and we will fuck this thing up because that is what we do." Tank says. "We are about to lose everything." a younger girl says to Tank. "We aren't losing shit as long as a single one of us is here. We are home, we don't need named places, we just need each other and our rules so get your ass's in gear and let's do what we do people." Tank says. Everyone starts moving a little more forcefully and taking more time with their shots.

Riley pulls his knife out of the zombies head and quickly re-attaches the cables in the A.P.C. "Rides ready, how are we doing Sunny?" Riley asks the boy inside the police station. "You know you're insane right?" Sunny asks. "Who isn't anymore?" Riley responds laughing. "Nancy says hurry up and pull the corpse plug so we can have at the scraps." Sunny chuckles. As Riley pulls his knife from the next zombie a thought occurs to him. "Perhaps the way I save others is by teaching them to save themselves and become as much a monster as they need." Riley muses aloud driving his knife into the next zombie. By this point there are only a handful of zombies remaining. Riley is feeling a strange sense of excitement at the next battle with the dead. He finds that he has grown more and more eager to face them with his time away from the 13 clan. He was no longer nervous moving through the dark. He no longer jumped at the sounds of rustling around the corner. He no longer had to fight to stay awake because he could sleep surrounded by the dead, their symphony of moans lulling him to sleep like a lullaby made for him. He no longer could stay with the 13 because he was uncomfortable around them, he no longer could sleep with the sounds of life and talk. He no longer could shy away from the gazes and judgment. He no longer could bare the confinement of their notions of morality. He would no longer be goaded into Jason's games of guilt over Riley destroying his leg. The old world had died after all and all old debts were paid in full with the graveyard that became the world. Riley ties a chain around the corpses at the bottom of the pile and drags them away with the A.P.C. behind the wall the 4 sit waiting. "Sorry guys, I got carried away." Riley signs to the 4. "So lets load this shit and add to the dead fucks." Riley signs grinning.

Rat fires several arrows into the crowded horde. "What the fuck is that?" Tank asks looking at the fast approaching vehicle. "If your on the wall I strongly suggest fucking off now." Riley laughs slamming into the horde crushing many under tire. The vehicle doesn't even notice and with a sharp jerk Riley slides the armored truck into a drift slamming it into the wall. "Did he just drift that?" The 4 climbed out of the windows onto the wall followed by Riley. "So who missed me?" Riley laughs expecting the usual wide eyed stares he always received. "Thank god you're here." Mrs. King says. "Yeah yeah save us and all that good shit." Riley says. Walking past her into the main house. "Alex how is my bomb!?" Riley shouts. "Almost done, it's good to hear your voice!" Alex yells. Riley cocks his head to the side. He cares about these people he knows but at the same time he has grown to dislike them as well. They were simultaneously his world and his curse. "I'm going to go kill shit you keep working." Riley says to himself as he wanders to the wall. People are staring at him as he lines up with Nancy and her siblings. "She doesn't talk much does she?" Tank asks. "She is deaf." Riley says and signs. "When did you learn sign language?" Tank asks. "Yesterday." Riley answers and returns to his favorite game.
