Chapter 8: Chapter 8 - Sona Sitri

The moment the bell sounded and the gate was closed, Souna turned towards me.

"Akatsuki-kun, would you like to play a game of chess with me?"

"Why not? I'll play with you, even though it's been a while since I've played."

"Wonderful, then, Akatsuki-kun, please follow Tsubaki to the student council room, I'll come shortly after I finish my duties as the president of the student council."

Strangely as it may seem, I was actually excited to finally play my favorite non-video game once again. The main reason for that is definitely the lack of people that are quite good at it, even though I could play with my aunt, she wasn't the best person to play against, since she would just lose the game in the first few moves.

As I was waiting for Souna to finish her work, Tsubaki poured me some tea, something that she seemed to be very skilled at doing. After I thanked her for the tea, she decided to sit near me on the couch. I could see that she was trying to strike up a conversation with me and for some unknown reason, she found it really hard to do it. While I can agree with what most of my fellow classmates say about me, I wasn't truly a cold person that wouldn't greet you back, but most likely due to how I acted in class, no one had the courage to approach me other than Abe. So looking at the Vice-President of the student council having difficulties starting a conversation with me, I've decided to help her out and be the one that starts the conversation.

"So Tsubaki-san, how are you today?"

"I'm doing fine, Akatsuki-san, but shouldn't I be the one asking you that? After all, we heard that you were attacked by a girl last night."

That was unexpected for more than one reason. I don't recall telling anyone what happened last night and I'm sure that neither Yukina, since she had just transferred, but at the same time, maybe there are more things unknown to me than just the Church and who knows how many mythologies can be actually true?

Now, it's time to bullshit my way out of this conversation, hopefully, they won't find the truth, or who knows what could happen to me and Yukina if this whole thing gets public.

"To tell you the truth, that girl is someone from middle school and she thought that I was her ex-boyfriend. I'm sorry to say, but I can't reveal her whole love story since it has nothing to do with me. Anyways, long story short what happened was that they got into a fight and she got scared. Now, a few months later, the girl wanted revenge for what her ex did to her and she thought that I was him, since that guy left the town, thankfully I've managed to dodge her attack or God knows where I would have found myself?"

Another strange thing that I've noticed was that as soon as I mention God, Tsubaki flinched a little, but just long enough for me to see her discomfort at the mention of the biblical God. Even though I would have loved to find the story behind this, I couldn't pry open her secrets, at least not now, maybe in the future when we are friends, I could ask her.

"I hope she didn't injure you, Kojou-san."

"Believe me, Tsubaki-san that that would have been the least of my problems that night. I had to calm down the girl, comfort her, and make her understand that she doesn't need to prove to anyone how strong she was."

"Oh, just the two of you? Now, I'm curious about what you two did after that."

"My aunt was also at home, she told the girl that she could sleep at us for the night, seeing how the girl was after all that."

"I see…Well, let's change the subject since I believe that this isn't a comfortable subject to talk about. I don't know if you have seen those posts about the fact that there are plenty of rumors of weird people that some believe to have powers on Earth. What do you think of them?"

"Haven't given them much thought, and to be perfectly truthful with you, I didn't really notice those things, you know, new town, new life stuff. Even if it's a bit hard to believe, though. I mean… priests fighting winged people that look like those fantasy animes and mangas... Then there's also their name, what did they call themself again? The Lion Academy? No… Church something king' something... Or that group of cosplayers that proclaims themselves as humanity's true heroes? Please. I believe those stories as much as I believe those people that see UFOs in the air and use the camera from an old 2000 phone."

"I also find them quite childish. Who knows what they are doing, after all, from all that we know, they could be very well making a movie."

"Could be that or maybe there's an upcoming invasion from the devil realm."

For a second both of us looked at each other when both of us burst laughing at the same time.

"I'm really curious how does your imagination work, Kojou-san?" Tsubaki asked, shifting so that her shoulder would slightly touch mine.

"You know, I let my mind fly between the wonders of the world, imagining things left and right, heck sometimes I even wonder why won't start writing a book. That's about the gist of it. It's amazing and somewhat refreshing. Although… seeing that there's such a beautiful girl near me makes me stop thinking about my crazy ideas and instead focus on her. It has a certain je ne sais quoi to it if I could say it like that."

Unfortunately, as if fate itself was trying to get me away from her, soon after I said those words, my phone start ringing which made me show an apologizing smile to the girl before I got up and left the room to respond.

As soon as I left, Souna got up from her desk and walked toward her queen.

"How did it go? Does he know something about us? "

"I couldn't find anything related to his knowledge of the supernatural, but I'm sure that he's lying since I don't believe that whatever happened last night could be just a misunderstanding. For now, though we can't be certain about anything and it's better to treat it as if he was clueless."

"I also think it's for the best to treat him like that. Say Tsubaki, what do you think about him, from your short interaction with him."

"He's interesting, quite the gentleman and while he briefly glanced at my breasts once, after that, he looked me in the eyes, and not even once after that did he try to peek, not even when I tried to slightly suggest him to look at me. Akatsuki-kun also has a wild imagination which could make him a good long rage caster if only he had the mana to work with it. Other than that, I couldn't find anything more about him other than what I have already told you, but one thing is for sure, Akatsuki Kojou is very protective of his past from what I have seen."

"Hmm, you didn't say anything about how you two flirted with each other for a while, could it be that you took a fancy to him?"

"What! Sona-sama, don't say that!"

"Gossiping about me, ladies?"

I asked as I reentered the room

"You're not that interesting." Tsubaki lied. I grasped my heart in pain.

"Ouch! I have never been so insulted in my life!" I exclaimed, eliciting a giggle from both of them surprisingly.

"Kojou-san, would you, now, like to play a game of chess with me?"

"Of course, it would be my pleasure."

"Before we start, do you know how to play or do you need me to explain the game to you?"

"I may not look like a veteran, but I've played this a lot when my old man was alive, we would play every night."

Both of us sat down and I picked the black pieces, letting Souna take the white ones. The game went back and forth without too much happening at first and while it seemed that I was on the losing side, I was actually leading her into a trap. By the time she found out that it was strange how I was sacrificing my paws, her king was left undefended and with a quick and calculated move thanks to my queen, I checkmated her, winning the game, making both girls gasp in shock.

I got up from my seat, smiled at them, and told them that I had to go or I wouldn't hear the end of it if my aunt hears that I skipped classes.

Meanwhile, Sona was fighting an internal war of disbelief.

'Did I just lose a game of chess? Me, the smartest young devil?'

I put both of my hands on my head and looked at Tsubaki. She saw how sad I was after I made a deal with my parents when I told them I didn't want to get brought into a forced marriage like my friend. For that, I had to find a good reason and that was that I had to marry whoever beat me in a chess match…and now a human did it, more so ever when he lead the game in his favor from the start, as if he didn't even try to beat me in the first place.

"Sona-sama…are you feeling well?"

"I will be fine, Tsubaki. I just hope, my sister won't find out about this, since I'm scared of what she would do to Kojou-san if she ever finds out that he managed to win against me."
