Chapter 2: Prologue

It was noon and 3 year-old Josephine Abrams sat beside her mother who was soaked in her tears.

They both knew what was going on but none had the power to stop it.

Josephine had been diagnosed with the fearful disease, Tay-Sachs disease. Her parents weren't surprised because it was an Genetic Disorder that ran in the family but were devastated it had to affect their only daughter. So that's why she fell ill often.

"Mom, I don't want to die" screamed young Josephine. Her mother cried the more "I want to live"

Lori Abrams raised her head and used two fingers to wipe her tears away. She smiled. "Nobody wants to die Jojo but there's a way we can live forever" she said.

Josephine looked at her mother and asked "How?"

"By creating memories that nobody will ever forget. That way we continue to live in their hearts" came the reply.

Josephine pondered on what her mother had just said and smiled.

That was the end of their discussion at that time.

Two days later, Josephine was discharged from the hospital. She insisted her mother play the violin for her. As her mother played "Four Seasons" with usual accuracy she said, "Mom, teach me to play the violin so I can live forever"

Lori smiled, "That's my daughter. Never give up"

And thus began the journey of young Josephine. Her mother devoted her time to teach her all the symphonies she knows today. With love, care and determination, Josephine became a prodigy.

"I made another mistake in a row" Josephine cried. Her mother smiled. "Mistakes are inevitable, what's important is that we learn from them"

At the age of 5, Josephine began playing for concerts and participating in competitions.

At all her concerts sat a boy with his father. Isaac Smith. A boy who's father was a teacher and mother was a florist. He admired her and never missed a concert.

Then it happened, at 9 Josephine had a seizure. She had to be hospitalized. During those times she couldn't even raise her bow. She cried. She hit herself. She became depressed. "Why do you play?" a voice  said one day.

In the hospital, Josephine became scared. The voice kept asking the same question till she had a conviction to why she played "I play because I want to be unforgettable"

With that conviction she regained her hopes. She put in all her best to get better. It wasn't easy but it was worth it. She begged her mother to always keep the radio beside her so each time there was a competition she would be able to listen and imagine the sound in her mind.

Soon, she was strong enough to pick up her bow and create melodious sounds.

Years later, although she hadn't participated in a competition in a long time, she was allowed to go to school anytime she wasn't in the hospital.

Those times, she found out the prodigy who had taken her glory, Isaac Smith, a young boy her age. He was a gifted pianist who had just lost his mother to cancer.

The doctor who managed Josephine came into her room with a grim aura. He stared at Lori Abrams and her husband, who was almost never around because he was a pilot "I'm afraid Josephine has less than 3 years to live" he said with regrets.

Josephine smiled. Then cried. Then spoke to herself. Once she was alone with her parents, she asked for one last favor "Mom, Dad can I win one last competition before I live forever"

Her parents cried. They agreed. They signed her up for The Chicago Classical Musical.

Josephine didn't know how it was going to happen but she had to play with Isaac Smith. No matter what.
