Chapter 14: Inheritance
"When did I get these titles Soph?"
[You got both of them yesterday and don't give me nicknames on your own.]
"Why do I not know about them then?"
[It's because you couldn't read the system window, master.]
"That explains it, but I must be some genius to get two titles in a day. Ain't I cool Soph?"
[Of course..... not. Aren't you going to the hunting grounds and don't call me that.]
"I want to but I don't know why I am feeling fatigued all of a sudden. I just want to lie down and sleep. "
[Hmmm..... looks like you are experiencing the side effects of your class change.]
"Elaborate please."
Rey was intrigued because in the operator's institute, they weren't told anything even remotely close to this and operator's institute was for the elites. Perhaps because inheritances are not easily found.
[I also don't know much but according to a theory there are some side effects of class change via inheritance. Like fatigue, change in personality and behaviour being the most common]
[It is not proven but it is believed by many that an inheritance also contains some of the essence of the original owner. And when one accepts the class change, the essence gets merged with theirs. That's how you instantly learn the skills instead of training them and know how to use them.
Moreover, you may not feel this but your body is probably changing by the second to get better accustomed to your class.]
"So, if my body is changing then shouldn't I be feeling pain?"
[You would be if you were an average person or not suitable with the class then the amount of changes will be a lot more and painful. But as your body is probably compatible with the class, you are not undergoing any significant changes.
That is also why you are only feeling fatigued rather than writhing on the floor in pain.]
"What about the change in behaviour and personality part?"
[That is probably because your mental resistance and willpower is strong enough to resist them. If you are weak willed then the essence may greatly affect you but if you are resilient enough then there won't be any effect like in your case.
One more thing, this is all just speculations so there can be other reasons and side effects, master.]
"That is a lot to take in at once and it is tiring me out."
Rey moved from the sofa to his bed which looked even more inviting than usual.
"You, why are you looking at me like that? Do you want me to come to you, beddy?"
Rey was slowly getting drowsy as he started blurting out nonsense.
[Get a hold of yourself idiot!]
Though Sophie acted angry, she was worried about Rey on the inside.
"Hey Soph! How can I refuse someone who looks this..... this soft, bouncy and inviting? I am going in."
[If you are feeling drowsy then why are you acting like a freaking drunkard?]

Sophie again tried to keep Rey awake but he was already in dreamland.
[*sigh* I only hope that he resists whatever will happen.]
(Somewhere in the woods, in a cottage)
"Quit being stubborn old man. You know better than to decline my offer."
A man in his early 20's adorned by rich, lavish clothes, priceless jewellery and smooth milky white skin gave the picture of a young master from a prestigious house. He was surrounded by four men not much older than him with spears and was trying to intimidate an old man.
"I have told you Qing Liang, you are not fit for my teachings. A person who has never tasted the harshness of life or survived life threatening instances or conquered the darkness within him, will never be able to grasp the 'Shadow manoeuvres conquering light' technique.
You who has always known the bright side of life will not understand the essence behind the technique."
" That is just your excuse old man to not teach me. But I will learn this, either you willingly teach me or I will make you. "
"... "
The old man ignored the youth and went back to meditating in the lotus position.
"You.... old man I gave you a chance considering your age but looks like your pride has blinded you as you can't see what's good for you. Don't blame me for what happens to you."
The youth ordered the guards to attack the old man with a slight nod of his head.
"Illuminate!" The young man used a skill, illuminating the whole cottage as if it was noon.
"Now, where will you run old geezer? I know your weakness, without any shadows you are as good as any ordinary martial artist. Hahaha you should have just agreed when I was asking you nicely.
Too bad I'll have to take your corpse. "
Under the bright light, the four guards dashed towards the old man with superhuman speed and thrusted their spears simultaneously at the old man's vitals with utmost precision.
*whoosh*
The guards seemed to have pierced the old man but unfortunately for them all they saw was their view disorienting before they blacked out.
The old man who looked like someone in his mid 80's with wrinkly skin, suddenly disappeared before the spear could strike him and twisted the necks of the four guards in quick succession by approaching them from the back.
"Wh... what just happened? How could you..... without any shadows?"
Qing Liang was shocked as one moment, the old man was about to be pierced in four different places but the very next moment, the four elite guards which his family specially nurtured, lay dead on the floor instead and the old man was standing beside them, unarmed and unfazed.
*crack*
"Owwww! Seems like I am getting to old to not even take care of these younglings without getting tired, but I think I can take care of one more before my back pain kicks in."
The old man slowly moved towards Qing Liang, one step at a time but every step was like the harbinger of death for him.
"D... don't get any closer! You don't know who I am, I am the young master of the Liang clan."
The young man knew that he was not the oldie's match as he tried to threaten him with empty words.
"Just because of your stubbornness, these four talented guards were killed and for what? So that someone useless like you who can't even dare to fight back can get something he doesn't deserve."
The old man stopped when he was just three steps away when a dagger formed in his hands out of nowhere.
"You'll regret this old man, my father will come for you with all his might if you as much as touch a single hair of my body. What will you do then? It's better to you apologise and kowtow in front of me."
Qing Liang was scared shitless but he still tried to put on the act of the young master and threatened the old man using his father's name to escape.
" Hahaha! You amaze me kid. Haven't you realised, your father is scared of me more than you are. Why do you think he only gave you four guards and those who just completed their training? "
" You... you are bluffing, so that I get scared. Haha but your petty tricks w... won't work on me. "
" We have done enough chit chatting to last me for years and enough oxygen had been wasted by you. "
The old man disappeared into the ground as if being swallowed by it and
*whoosh*
the next moment a dagger was placed on the neck of the young master.
"One more thing, as long as there is even the tiniest of shadow, I AM INVINCIBLE!"
The old man whispered in the ears of Qing Liang as the dagger slowly sliced the smooth and milky skin of the man without any resistance. Drops of blood started to drip down from the blade onto the floor as they slowly formed a puddle.
'N.... no, I won't. I... I need to stop!! '
'Don't resist, just let it flow!'
'I can't.....ughhh, stop!'
The dagger which almost cut fully into the neck of the man suddenly stopped and was taken out.
Some time later, Qing Liang opened his closed eyes when he realised that he was not dead yet. He pushed back the spaced out old man with all his feeble strength and ran out of the cottage as fast as he could.
"You just wait old man. You'll regret this!"
"*sigh* A pain in the ass till the end! "
" By the way, you passed my trial young man. My blessings! "
(Back in Rey's room)
*huff* *huff*
"What was that dream?" Rey woke up from his sleep, drenched in sweat and panting heavily.

Rey narrated the whole incident as it is to Sophie.
[According to me it was as I told you earlier. The essence that merged with you had to do something with this.
The man himself said it was a trial is sorts.]
"So if I killed the man then there would've been changes and i would have failed the trial. But as I resisted i passed and my skill level rose. Is that it?"
[For the most part.]
" What time is it, by the way?"
[It's 5 in the morning.]
" I am awake now, so shall we go for a jog? "
(15 minutes later)
" Damn look at that piece of art ass. It looks so... so squishy! "
Rey was acting like any typical hormonal teen. Staring at the girls and women who were also jogging, shamelessly.
[Focus ahead not on them, pervert, Hmph!]
"Who said I am looking at them. It's just that I am appreciating the scenery and they are in the way. Not my fault"
Rey tried to convince Sophie such was not that difficult considering her personality.
[I... is that so?]
"Of course, I am just enjoying the view."
(5 hours later)
"We are here at last, Beginner Hunting Grounds"
[What should we do about this sack?]
*muffled noises*
"Oh this! Let me put it down first."
Rey put down the sack to reveal a person with hands and feet tied and mouth gagged by a piece of cloth.
