Chapter 2: Quick Way In

After knowing what he wanted to do, he started to keep an ear out for anyone who knew about the mafia. After all, since he decided to become a criminal, he might as well aim big.

After 2 months of paying attention to the local gossip and a lot of bullshit stories later, he figured out that there was a young Italian guy that hung around here called Charles Luciano, who recently got hired as a gunman by Joe Masseria, who was the boss of a gang in Lower Manhattan.

Frank thought that it would be difficult to get close to a boss, a young gunman close to the boss however, Frank thought was doable.

What he had to do before that however, was find out more about his future boss or partner, as well as find someone to introduce him to Luciano.

It would be best if that someone was from his school, after all, having a reputation as a good fighter and vicious person couldn't hurt.

Unfortunately, Frank knew almost everyone from his school and he was sure that no one there even knew of a guy like Luciano.

The next couple of days Frank spent asking around about Luciano, which proved to be a correct decision.

He learned that Luciano was close friends with a short little guy named Vito Genovese, who had spent a year in prison in 1917 for possession of an illegal firearm.

Vito had been running errands for some dangerous people from a young age, but it was hard to be threatening when you were young and 5'7.

This was enough information for Frank to think of a quick way in. Of course, this plan of his would have to go perfect, otherwise he'd put a target on his back, one which would prove fatal.

The good thing about his friends getting him into a lot of fights, was that he met a couple of local hooligans from different schools along the way.

Frank thought of a specific group of kids, who were always looking for trouble and decided on them. Getting them to a specific place wouldn't be hard, dropping off a note at one of their homes would do the trick.

Having Vito be there would be easy, after all, it was an alleyway close to one of the bars Frank got his information from. Vito would come to collect money from a guy there that bet on an illegal lottery.

Vito would always go there at the end of the month, he would come alone and it would be a quick in and out.

It was like clockwork, which was probably the reason Vito went there with only a knife the last couple of months.

Frank's plan was simple. He would anonymously leave the hooligans a note to be there at 21:50 and to come prepared unless they wanted to get a beating they would never forget.

They were a couple of bastards that were looking for trouble and couldn't let anything go, so they would probably bite.

As for Vito, he went to collect at 22:00, though sometimes he'd come a couple of minutes early.

At that time of day, there would be no one entering that dark alleyway, at least no one the hooligans would mistake for their target.

Frank was sure the hooligans would give Vito a beating, especially after Vito pulled his knife out.

Which Frank was also sure he would do, after all, after seeing 4-5 guys standing in front of the door where he collects, it wouldn't take a genius to connect the dots and think the guy was tired of paying so he hired some hooligans.

Vito could always run away, but building respect was a long term process, and running away from a bunch of teenagers with no weapons would be a serious hit to Vito's reputation.

Frank's plan was to "pass by" while Vito was getting beat and kill the teenagers as well as help Vito kill the guy that hired the hooligans.

This was the easy part of the plan, not because Frank thought he could win that fight, but because Frank had been saving the money his parents gave him to buy a gun, which he did a couple of weeks ago.

This was New York during the 1920s, guns were not exactly rocket ships.

If everything went as planned, Frank would have just saved Vito a beating to both him and his reputation, incriminated himself in front of Vito by shooting 4-5 guys and helped Vito deal with the gambler afterwards as well, all the while having proved himself to be a young killer with a strong stomach.

Coincidentally, he would tie up all loose ends before the hooligans could say someone told them to come here or before the gambler convinced Vito it wasn't him that hired them.

Pretty good first impression to make to a guy like Vito.

Frank wasn't sure if this would be enough to be accepted by Vito, but that wasn't what he wanted in the first place. He wanted to use this to call in a favor with Vito to get a sitdown with Luciano.

After all, Frank didn't think Vito was anyone important yet. His importance was that he was Luciano's childhood friend, who dealt in the same trade.

The plan wasn't without its flaws, but no matter what happened, prior to him shooting them, Frank Viktorovich was completely clean of this and couldn't be connected to it no matter who decided to look into things.

He was satisfied with the plan, however just in case anything happened, he decided to scope the place out in advance and find a quick route out.

He had a week before Vito's next collection visit, which he used to prepare both the plan and himself.

After all, if Vito happened to know the gambler personally and was sure it wasn't him, Frank would have to off Vito right then and there, before he figured it out.
