Chapter 22: Being A Bad Friend
Mabel just stayed still. She remained impassive and her face lost warmth.
" Look Forgive me but I was just kidding... I mean what would it take to get you to agree on this uhh?", he asked quickly and she let her blue eyes wind up to his, she kept on staring at him.
" Are you dumb Holden I can't do this.. ", she yelled at him, dragged her phone away from him and hurried away from the classroom.
What was she hearing because everything seemed to stop in her head. ' Lose Oxygen, Lose Oxygen, Lose Oxygen', it kept playing over her head that she didn't even realize when she stumbled to Megan's lunch desk.
She stretched her hand out and grabbed the bottled water on the next lunch table.
The owner glared at her but before he could take it back, She already unscrewed the cap and drank the content without stopping for a pause
Megan who had watched Mabel walk in with a tired look on her face and caused a scene at the other table, apologized on Mabel's behalf and passed her own bottle of water to him.
" What's wrong with you? Why are you behaving strange and where are your glasses?", Megan fired questions at Mabel and instead of answering her.
Mabel suddenly spat out all the content of water in her mouth on Megan's face.
She looked up and saw that everyone was already paying attention to the scene. Some students snickered and looked away, while others kept their eyes glued on Megan wondering what she would do to the strange girl on her lunch table.
Megan slowly got up from her seat and wiped the content of warm water from her face with the back of her sleeve.
She stared at Mabel and with her eyes signalled her to follow her outside. Mabel got up and accompanied Megan with the constant eyes of on lookers following them till they were out of the lunch room.
Megan didn't stop there and continued walking towards the girl's bathroom while Mabel followed suit.
Mabel had not intended to spill all the water out, it was just that while she was listening to Megan ramble, she remembered that she had taken off her glasses when she was at the class with Holden but never put them back on which meant they were in the class.
Or maybe Holden had them with him. She didn't know which to believe.
All through, Megan never said a word. She let Mabel follow her in silence and when she got to the ladies room, she went to a sink to wash her face with tap water before wiping her face dry with one of the face towels. She stared at Mabel through the sink mirror and saw her looking downwards.
She had just turned around to face her when she heard the most soft voice ever.
" Am sorry... I didn't mean to", Mabel said without looking up. She felt guilty but not because she spilled water on Megan's face but because when Holden said he would kiss her, deep down, she was......
Expecting him to do that, wasn't she being a bad friend?
