Chapter 2: Homebrew Magic

A golden trigram appeared on the floor of an office building, emerging from the light were two students about 14-15 in age.

"Hey, Do you have our group assignment?", A green haired girl asked her partner.

"Yeah, yeah I got it", a boy wearing a white coat, pin-stripe pants, and a hat.

Both of them have nameplates hanging on their sides, a sack, and some other miscellaneous items that seem very out of place with the world they've traveled to.

"Where are we?", the girl asked.

"I think we're at the planet that our teacher told us about, the place he called XB247. The inhabitants, creatures and aliens of this world named it after the ground they walk on. This material is small clumps of brown particles that plants absorb nutrients and phosphorus from. It's a dirt planet full of water", the boy read from his book.

"Ok, Myzkik. let's go explore!", his friend urged them to get moving.

"Wait for me Demmy!", Myzkik said chasing after her in the brightly lit office building.

They found themselves walking past various cubicles and rooms, strangely the occupants inside didn't see them. The pair passed through various walls observing the strangers scribbling notes, writing text on machines, and gathering in groups before separating.

"What's the assignment?", Myzkik asked Demmy.

Demmy opened the envelope with their assignment inside.

It read, "Search for the object of what they call 'magic' and think about what it means to the people living in this world."

Demmy and Myzkik looked at each other.

"That's such a simple assignment", Myzkik commented.

"We're already in magic classes, why did we have to come here to learn about it?", Demmy added.

The two of them walked around a little bit, disappointed that their project wasn't as exciting as some of their other classmates and stories that their seniors told them about.

Last year a group of seniors visited a world with no color, they went on a dragon slaying adventure with color explorers Camilla, her black cat and a tone-deaf starling.

Friends of theirs traveled to islands to resolve time paradoxes, visit towns like Racoon city, nameless towns, and explored an infinite Ikea.

"You're telling me we're here to learn about magic", Myzkik complained kicking at the empty air.

Demmy was tempted to just fudge the assignment and head back. However their upbringing demanded that at the very least they'd have the integrity to try without giving up.

"Who knows, if we have extra time we can go and play", Demmy responded.

Soon they entered a large warehouse, where large stacks of wooden palattes and objects where being moved around and assembled.

"I don't see any signs of magic here", Myzkik said.

"Check your mystometer", Demmy told him.

pulling out a card shaped object, both of them emitted a white glow and then dimmed.

"I'm not getting any signs here", Myzkik reported.

"Mine's telling me that there's some in that direction", Demmy said pointing east.

They both set off in that direction.

Passing through the warehouse, they passed through streets to arrive at a similar looking building.

"Is it here?", Myzkik asked.

"My mystometer is glowing weakly but it should be here", Demmy said.

They noticed a large amount of injured and sick people entering the building, while a lot of strong and healthy people exit. On the top of the building was the sign of a blue staff, with two winged snakes crawling on it.

"Why do they have those small demons on a staff", Demmy whispered to herself.

They both walked in. Every room had a person inside, the interior was like a maze. It reminded Myzkik of their last trip inside something called a bee hive, a contraption that Daedalus invented that had many empty spaces but only one entrance and exit.

One room was full of plants being turned into liquids and food for people to consume. Although some of them wore white hats and used knives, while the other group of people used glass and fire to turn food into a soupy liquid.

"Fascinating", Myzkik said observing some of the human activities.

"You think they're doing alchemy?", Demmy asked.

"Don't be silly, alchemy is an archaic magic used to create gold. They already have so much of it, they seem to be doing something else", Myzkik responded.

Demmy looked in her textbook, "They seem to be using science and chemistry."

Demmy showed Myzkik the pictures inside the book. She looked at their textbook for class and then looked up.

"This lab practical is very boring", Myzkik yawned.

"Do you have a good answer to the question", Demmy glared at Myzkik.

"uh... not really", Myzkik scratched at his head.

"Let's hurry and finish up so we can go and play. Last time my parents turned me into a snack bar for an entire week because we failed the last assignment", Demmy muttered angerly at the thought.

"ok, ok... let's keep looking", Myzkik appeased his groupmate.

Looking at their mystometer, it glowed weakly. However after searching for a while, they couldn't identify or find any traces of magic that it detected.

"Must be broken", Myzkik said impatiently.

"Or maybe we didn't look hard enough", Demmy replied.

"We searched for 3 hours, if we wait any longer it'll get dark soon and they'll all return home", Myzkik mentioned.

"Fine let's go look somewhere else. The TVs were cool though", Demmy said.

Myzkik took out a new mystometer and started to adjust it to be less sensitive. After a little bit, it started to glow again and they headed off in a different direction.
