Chapter 5: Soft Abyss

Rebellious... Wild... Uncontainable... These were the words that were used just seven years ago at my acclamation.

They were the description given by one of the Great Maji Elders, a society of seven members all with the most ability in one of the seven elements: Fire, Wind, Water, Earth, Electricity, Darkness, and Light. Some were young in appearance, some not.

Apparently at some point through the journey of growing into an expert in warmagic, you can stop aging or at least significantly slow it down. Some of them were purely Maji from the start, hence their age. Some were warmages who decided at some point to pursue a mastery in their element.

Irregardless, they are looked at with high regard. They are however rarely seen except for when there is an acclamation to occur that a major figure in society has requested their hands to perform the ritual. The rest of the time, they are silently cultivating at the Temple of the Most High, a stone palace tucked high and away from society near the peak of the Mountain of Gods, the tallest mountain in the world, or so I've been told.

None of them were present at the moment as I was standing in the middle of the water maji as I awaited my awakening. Their gazes were penetrating and eager. I suddenly began to sweat. I was nervous to say the least.

Yet, my sweating began to grow in volume and intensity. My skin became like burning coals, turning an ember orange then red. It was so unbearable that I buckled to my knees. The contact with floor hurt, but I soon noticed the stones began to melt. I was putting off so much heat that the water maji put up low grade shields to extinguish the intensity of it before it could harm them.

The burning sensation didn't subside. It felt poised to consume me. I couldn't hold it back any longer and cried out in agony. My mother jumped forward but was restrained by Lord Zetrion.

"Hold... watch..." He commanded, placing a hand over her chest.

Others stood astonished as I suddenly burst out with flames flowing from me as if I were a raging sun. They started as an electric blue. A blue so hot that the stones began to melt beneath my feet more intensely. I continued to cry out. The pain exploded into realms that not in my past life nor this one had ever acknowledged as possible.

The flames started to retract as they turned to a dark purplish shade. The change continued as the purple flames faded into a dark blood red. The bloody red flames then grew black fiery whips that mixed harmoniously with the red. The pain suddenly started to subside, yet I felt a foreign force begin to converge on top of and within me.

I heard all of a sudden a maniacal laughter that at first I didn't recognize. It was impish yet I suddenly felt there was a familiarity to it. It was then I realized that it was my voice distorted, but I wasn't willingly doing this. That wasn't all.

The flames apparently had retracted into a form over me. I was covered in a fiery figure that resembled what I remembered from my past life as a mythical demon. I looked evil. The fiery demon formed claws from my finger tips. Then it sprouted horns that spiked from the sides of the crown of my head. Then it developed deep empty pure black eyes. As if I wasn't scary enough, it formed a jagged mouth that had a devilish grin.

I heard the flames only as they flickered violently over me, but apparently there was quite the commotion going on outside of the veil as my mother had begun sobbing profusely, "My baby!!! He's going to die!! Stop this!!! Please!!!"

I suddenly became so angered by the scene I was witnessing that the fiery demon turned towards one of the Maji instantly assuming they were the culprits.

However, there was an extreme turn of events. A fiery spear flew out of no where, piercing directly through Lady Larayna's chest which caused her to spew blood from her mouth. She had a look on her face that I knew would haunt me forever. It was pale, distraught, and full of shock and horror She then collapsed onto the ground, dead...

Screams broke out every where as more fiery attacks flew from directions that couldn't be determined. Zetrion angrily threw up wind gusts blowing away as many of the attacks as he could. Some water warmages joined the defense as my mother layed over her mother's corpse.

With tears of despair, she looked up at me. I wasn't in control but my emotions had effected the fiery demon who then launched a wall of fire at three of the Maji, knowing they stood in the way of me making a difference.

That's when it hit me. The Water Maji had simultaneously extinguished my flames by combating my fire with a tidal wave, and I fell weakly onto the scorched cobblestone. The looks of despair on my mom's face and the face of my now deceased grandmother played like a torturous loop over and over in my head as I heard the screams and sounds of explosions of magic started to slowly fade away. Soaking wet I struggled to get up, but I fell flat on my stomach, too weak to move.

The last things I saw was my mother guarding my grandmother's body as she launched a thunderous bolt of lightning at some adversary. I saw Sehaela cowering under a ledge with fear and tears streaming down her face. Her eyes were locked onto what I saw as a woman's body laying face down, slowly being consumed by fire.

I saw Zetrion hovering in the air with a giant hammer that was made of dark wind currents confined to that form. He then took off out of view. My vision began to blur and the screams and commotion began to taper away as the weakness over took me.

There was only a soft abyss that I fell into.
