Chapter 8: Who is he?

Vivian glanced at the pale lifeless body of the Queen, and wondered the implications. Was it safe to leave her here all by herself? Will she be alright if Vivian goes onto whatever quest they were headed for? Was it alright to do so? She wondered all these things at once. "Tell me more about this mentor."

"His name is Devon Dawson. I have never met him face to face, but I have heard chatter about him amongst the locals, and of course, with the queen." Carson informed Vivian.

"And how shall we find him?" urged Vivian.

"I am not certain if we can. It is an extremely difficult task to-"

"Then why the hell did you mention him if you can't tell me anything relevant about him." Vivian snarled at Carson, causing Carson to flinch. Suddenly aware of her inappropriate outburst, Vivian composed herself. She cleared her throat, and declared. "I am sorry about that." she gulped.

"Your majesty, I beg you not to apologize to me. Ever." Carson told/ begged Vivian. As if he was afraid of the consequences of Vivian apologizing to Carson. Vivian pursed her lips but didn't bother to add anything else.

"Just tell me what can I do?" Vivian shrugged.

"He hides from the local eyes, or so I have heard. And unlike the Queen, he is scarcely heard off. Finding him would be difficult, very much so. But I suppose there will be some clues hidden in the Queen's room." Carson suggested.

"Fine, let's check out that room." Vivian shrugged and was about to walk out of that room, when Carson blurted.

"I can't come. I am not allowed to enter her room, or even stand closer than a foot from the main entrance of the door," he bowed his head further.

"So? She even asked me to not go to her room. I am going"! Vivian scoffed.

"As her bride you have more authority than me. Also, I suggest not violating too much of her rules." Carson mumbled, then bit his own lips.

"If I don't do that, and something happens to the queen, will that be alright?" Vivian spat. "I defeated the strongest men in our country, I can handle the queen." Vivian rolled her eyes.

"Pardon me for overstepping my boundaries, but these situations are irrelevant. The fights mostly handled physical strength. When it comes to manipulation, and politics, there is no one better than the Queen herself in the entire northern seas. She has ways you can't even imagine." He declared, as he trembled lightly in fear of his own words.

"Perhaps that's true." Vivian shrugged, knowing full well how accurate Carson was. Queen Guinevere had been Vivian's life's interest, keeping her eye open on everything that the Queen ever did. No matter what, she always knew what to expect from the Queen, and yet there have been times when the queen managed to surprise Vivian. But that was not for the public eye to know. "Let's go. You can wait outside of the room." begrudgingly, Vivian huffed.

The closed in on the location of the Queen bedroom. With her sharp hearing Vivian could hear the soft tremble of Carson's lower limbs as their steps increased in pace. It could be because of one prosthetic leg, or maybe because the thought of Vivian going into the queen's room without any permission scared Carson quite a lot. "Wait out here." Vivian simply shrugged and walked into the Queen's room, leaving Carson behind.

As Vivian walked in, she saw the way the queen's room was decorated. The entire place was coloured in pink, with not even a single red stain around. Since Queen Guinevere doesn't allow anyone in her room, it was evident that she cleaned the entire thing all by herself. And no doubt, she did a splendid job.

"Wow." Vivian couldn't help but whisper, as she marveled on the beauty of the carcasses on the wall. Vivian was mesmerised. Shaking her head, she tried to look around for anywhere. Given how neatly everything was organised, there is no way Guinevere wouldn't realise Vivian was here, lest she didn't touch anything in her sight. Heck she might notice the footprints left behind by Vivian.

Taking a deep breath, and shutting down the voice in the back of her mind, Vivian looked for any clue superficially. Clearly a room such as this which was meant to be off limits must have some giveaways to figure out the location of this unknown person.

When nothing in her sight seemed appropriate enough for her quest, she decided to dig deeper. She roamed the bookshelves, took a look at the great portraits that had a calming visage in comparison to the other portraits in the castle that was kept in the plain sight, but none of them seemed good enough for a clue. 'This is ridiculous. Maybe the queen doesn't need to survive. Maybe I should simply let her die.' she huffed as she thought.

Finally, when she was about to leave, she noticed a tiny ceramic toy. It was a pot bellied bunny that had dark teeth, which in combination with the red eyes definitely looked scary. What irked Vivian more was that despite the calm nature of the entire room, the statue promoted a sense of agitation into the hearts of onlookers. That ceramic toy certainly didn't belong in this room. Vivian sighed, and took a step towards it. She touched it with her hands, pulled on it, and soon there was a sense of vibration felt by Vivian. It wasn't magnanimous in nature, it was trivial but accountable by Vivian. She noticed a tiny crevice on the floor appear right next to the carpet, and following the trail of the crack she noticed it leading to the wall. Vivian wondered if it meant anything or not, but one thing Vivian knew for sure was that the crack on the wall wasn't there a few moments ago.

Vivian walked towards the wall, and touched all over it with her bare hands, looking for any clue or any reason for the sudden appearance of the crevice. Finally the lower portion of the wall felt hollow on palpating, and upon pressing on it went a little deep inside itself. As if Vivian wasn't surprised enough, the wall rolled up a little and rolled up, granting a tiny passage to Vivian. The crevice separated a little as well to give way.

Was that a secret passage? To where? Maybe that place had some answers, some secrets that would lead Vivian to this mysterious person in question. With that hope she walked in further, careful with each step, hoping not to walk into some sort of trap. Wherever she was headed, it really stinked, so much so that Vivian had the urge to throw up, and as a doctor she was pretty much used to stinks.

With trying her level best not to breathe (which wasn't really necessary in the first place, but simply a force of habit.) she walked in. After god knows how many stairs when Vivian finally reached the floor, she noticed nothing but darkness. Luckily, Vampires had good night vision, being the creatures of night, so she simply kept walking ahead.

After a certain distance, she noticed a place secured by bars. On looking further she noticed a person laying on the floor in the corner of that caged room. Wait? The queen was holding someone captive? Was the person alive? Who was that? She wondered. Vivian finally realized why the Queen's room was such an off limits area.
