Chapter 2: Companions

Stumbling back into his house the boy began to pack some essentials into a small leather backpack. He had made up his mind he was going to go beyond the walls and kill every last one of those devils living there. They had killed his mother, and he would make sure to avenge her and stop their terrible acts.

The boy was about to leave the house when he spotted a small picture inside a makeshift frame. A sad smile appeared on his face, it was of a small family of three in the centre stood a much younger version of him, while on his right stood his mother, her long auburn hair tied back in a bun. The person on the left however was someone the boy had no memory of, his adoptive father, a man with grey hair and purple eyes. his mother had told him many stories about him, how kind and caring he had been and how he could barely visit.

Tears started to gather in the corners of his eyes, but not wanting to have to think about his mother, he quickly stuffed the picture into his bag. Slamming the door open he took a step outside only to look back at the small house, "Goodbye." he whispered before marching off into the forest.

Stumbling out of the forest the boy caught himself on a tree and had a look around.

Ahead of him was open grassland with only a few trees to be seen. He was about to sit down when he heard people coming toward him. Pressing himself against the tree, the boy began to slow down his breathing trying to calm his racing heart.

Listening carefully to their conversation he deduced that there were three of them. As the trio moved nearer the boy drew a knife, he had packed and readied himself to pounce.

His eyes narrowed as they passed the tree, they were kids, about his own age, wearing shabby cloaks and large backpacks. He moved quickly but silently towards them, his feet crushing the grass beneath his feet. Moving up behind the thickset boy, he tensed his legs and lunged.

The boy with blond hair was thrown to the ground and both the other children screamed. Grabbing the blond's wrist, the boy twisted his arm behind his back and pressed the knife to his throat.

"Don't move."

Both the other kids stepped back, their arms raised in surrender. "Who are you?" the boy asked the trio, but hearing no answer from them he pressed the knife closer to the blond's throat and shouted, "ANSWER ME!"

The blond girl slowly took a step forward and stuttered, "I-I'm Annie Leonheart, and these are Bertholt Hoover and Reiner Braun. We've gotten lost and only want to find our way home."

The boy's eyes narrowed into slits and he pressed the knife closer to the blond's throat, "Inside the Walls?" A smile appeared on the girl's face, "YES!" Nodding a small sad smile formed on his face, "Alright." He then stood up, "Then we can all travel together." The girl smiled nervously, "Sounds great."

Glancing back down at the blond, the boy extended his hand, "I'm sorry, are you alright." This made the other boy grimace and glance at his two companions, "I'm fine."

"That's good." The boy said, as he, with astonishing ease, picked the other, heavier, boy off the ground.

For a few seconds, none of them spoke until the blond girl stepped forward, her hand extended, "I'm Annie, Annie Leonheart." The slightly taller boy took her hand and smiled, "Valentine Ackerman." He then turned to the tall boy, who smiled nervously, "Bertolt Hoover." The last boy still seemed angry when Valentine shook his hand, but he introduced himself anyway, "Reiner Brown, nice to meet you."
