Chapter 19: Chapter 19: New team
"If you do represent a threat I will kill you without hesitation"
His words radiated coldness and his dead serious eyes could give the shivers to a weaker person, his superiors didn't know him enough to realize that it was an uncharacteristic reaction of him, but the girl by his side thought otherwise.
She punched his arm to make him snap out of it, which he did, soon returning to his usual neutral expression.
She turned to Eren with a smile that warmed the atmosphere, getting rid of the awkwardness created by her friend "Don't worry Eren, we know that you're not a threat, Kle just wanted to scare you to make you behave, hope you don't take it personal"
Eren took a little to snap out of it, but he replied "Oh, yeah, sure, I know"
The awkward was almost gone, at that point captain Hange spoke up "Whatever, now Eren, let me see if this tooth of yours can still be placed back" she opened her palm to show the tooth inside.
But the moment she opened his mouth she was stunned.
The tooth had already regrown.

The other recruits where selecting in which regiment to join, with a record high amount people joining the Scout regiment compared to any batch of recruits in history, mostly thanks to the situation in which nobody knew when the Colossal Titan could come back.
But even more than that it was thanks to the display of might of the two top cadets who as soon as they came back to Trost, they immediately asked to be sent to clear the district of every single titan that had entered during their period away.
Their motivation to do so was that they wanted to avenge their fallen friends and companions.
They succeeded in their self imposed mission the same day, killing over forty titans alone, farther increasing their kill count, before even joining the Survey corps, they already had a higher amount of kills than any member in the history of the regiment, combined they were above even Levy who had close to two hundred kills to his name.
While the commander was having a relatively happy time thanks to all the people joining, although the happiness disappeared once he remembered that most of them would die and had joined out of arrogance after seeing the two monsters, there was a certain group of individuals retreating farther inside Wall Rose's territory.
"So, my dear Kle, would you mind telling me why you snapped like that at Eren a bit ago?" asked the red haired girl to her friend with a smile that hid the worry she had inside, she had never seen him threatening anyone in a non joking manner.
"No reason, I was just making sure he knew what would happen if he actually is an enemy" replied the boy cryptically, he had no intention of telling her the true reason, but lying was useless on her so he had learnt that telling half or partial truths was the best way to hide things.
"And why would he be a threat now?" asked the girl.
"We already had three and one we don't have any information about, at this point I trust only you" whispered the boy loudly enough to only be heard by his friend and not by the other surrounding them.
They were currently in a convoy with Eren in the middle on a cart, the two of them were on one side on the same horse with Klemens commanding the horse and Liesl resting her back on his chest.
They were the best when it came to horse riding, but given that there was no threat she decided that letting him do all the work while she rested would be a better way to pass time.
"You still consider Annie an enemy? I thought we discussed this, Kle" said the girl with a stern tone, they had both discussed the matter of Annie and how to deal with it, so the thought that he could be having second thoughts worried her.
"No, I don't, it's just that we don't know what the fuck goes on other than what Annie told us, and I'll stop you right now" he said while stopping her from interrupting him "I know she can't lie with you there, but hiding details and half truths are a different matter" he knew that because that's how he hid things from her.
"Calm down, Kle, you don't usually get this nervous about things, what is going?" asked the girl worried, while there were no variations on the tone of voice the boy used, she could see his eyes waver.
She had never seen him like this ever since they were children, he never doubted, not even when they were escaping from a titan infested land as mere ten year olds.
"I'd rather not talk about" he replied with a tone that told her he wouldn't talk about it no matter what she said.
He had no intention of telling her his fear of her dying, he could handle the sky itself falling if he needed, but her leaving him behind was something the mere thought of made his heart hurt.
Deep down he thought that he should just kill every single one of those titan shifter and let their powers be forgotten in history, but then he remembers that some of them are his friends and calms down.
But that idea never disappears, it gets only repressed deep down.
He didn't want to kill anybody, he thought that doing so would make him no better than their enemies, the people on the other side of the sea, the so called Marleyans.
He had heard the history of their people from Annie, he thought the entire conflicts to be extremely stupid and based on nothing more than ignorance and fear, but they were enemies nonetheless.
He had been thinking of any way of stopping this conflict peacefully and had a half idea on how to do it, but there were too many variables he simply had no idea about until he got more informations.
Liesl showed a small, pained smile, she felt slightly hurt that he still didn't trust her with his thoughts and what troubled him.
They had been together for their entire lives, they knew each other better than twins did.
She rested her back on his chest atop the horse and looked at him, dead in the eyes with a neutral expression, mimicking his, and said with a domineering tone "You will tell me, sooner or later, mark my words" she showed a grin going to end to lighten the atmosphere.
"If you say so" whispered the boy in an almost inaudible tone, but she heard it, loud and clear.
Liesl, seemingly content with his reply, closed her eyes and relaxed, knowing that there was no way she could fall as long as he was behind her.
"Hey newbies, I know being young and in love is cool and all, but maybe keeping an eye out would be better at the moment" came an irritated voice of a man who looked way older than he actually was.
"And remember, we are retreating only because the two of you said we needed to figure out how to bring out Eren's titan, we would have already closed the breach otherwise"
"Shut up, old man, Eren doesn't even know how to do anything with his power, if we didn't do this he wouldn't have been able to do anything, much less close the breach" replied the annoyed voice of the girl, she was about to finally fall asleep and the old man dared to disturb her.
"As he is now, Eren is almost as useless as you!"
"What!?" replied the man, Oluo Bozado, outraged by what the girl said "I'll have you know that my titans kill count is second only to captain Levi's, I'm a veteran with many years in the army unlike like you newbies!"
"You're statistics are outdated, just like you, if you want to talk about kill count..." she thought for a bit, but realized she didn't bother to count, so she turned her head to the boy behind her and said "Kle, go ahead and tell the fossil our kill count"
But, to her disappointment, he replied "And how would I know? I don't care enough about such an immature thing"
While she thought that he was just trying to act cool, the words he said still caused damage to Oluo as he had been indirectly been called immature by a barely sixteen year old.
"Calm down here, we will all be in the same team so we should be friends, not be fighting with each other over pointless things"
The voice they heard came from behind, it was a light brown haired woman with brown eyes, a bit on the short side called Petra Ral.
"They started by calling me an old man!" exclaimed Oluo, demonstrating that Klemens was right in calling him immature.
"They" she emphasized "Are young enough that you could be called old even if you actually looked your age"
"Who do you..." but his words finally came to a stop as he bit his tongue after talking so much on horseback.
As the man shouter, Lie whispered loudly enough to be heard by none other than her friend "Finally some peace and quiet, good night" as she closed her eyes to go back to sleep under the disappointed gaze of the boy.
'We just came in this team and she's already picking fights' he thought, but soon his expression changed into a kind smile 'But I wouldn't have her any other way'
"Oooh, so you can smile!" came the exited voice of a dark brown haired woman with her hair tied up in a messy ponytail with bangs parted in the middle.
The boy's expression turned back to his usual neutral expression as he turned his head to face the captain and said sarcastically in a monotone voice "Yes, captain, I am indeed capable of human emotions, but don't you have anything better to do than coming with us to the middle of nowhere to check on Eren?"
"Yes and no, Levi is enough back at trost to keep things from degenerating, plus I'm the lead researcher in titan physiology, in this occasion where we have to find out how to have him transform I'll be much more useful than Levi" replied the captain temporarily commanding their team.
They trusted the team to keep Eren safe without Levi mainly thanks to the two young newbies, but also because they trusted Hange with controlling the situation without problems.
"So I assume you have an idea already" stated the boy, hoping for a positive reply.
"That, my boy, is something that I'll find out soon enough" said the woman as she jumped to the carriage were Eren was resting, still very confused by his situation, he still couldn't remember anything from when he apparently turned into a titan so their discussion still felt incomprehensible to him.
"Eren, you already told me everything, but can you tell me again..." the woman went on and on having Eren retelling every single detail his mind could recall, it reached the point were Klemens started suspecting that Eren's mind started making things up just to deal with the barrage of questions.
Soon enough, they reached an uninhabited piece of land, near enough to trost were they could reach the wall without taking too much time, but far enough that Eren transforming would cause no damage or unrest among the population living nearby.

While the other members of the team were doing their things, Klemens took it upon himself to look at the place were figuring out how to trigger Eren's powers from above.
Fortunately, there was a small cliff nearby, so he decided that the top of it would be the best location from which he could lookout.
He could have very easily gone to the top using his gear for the tridimensional movement, but for some reason he couldn't explain, he decided against it.
He decided to climb it normally.
