Chapter 20: MonsterRex.

-----------------------------------------

A/N: I'd like to thank my patrons, it really means a lot to me. One of the best feelings is when you know people appreciate your work.

It was something I could only honestly call an abomination. A chimera of sorts. It was a bipedal monster, a mix of different monsters in the Large Tree Labyrinth. It had an insectoid shell, bear-like claws, and some sort of troll/hobgoblin face.

It was something Dr.Frankenstein would make.

The moment my eyes met with the monsters, I knew this would be different. This was the kind of fight where only one of us would make it out alive in the end.

And I most definitely plan on making it. One way or the other.

I barely had enough time to put my sword up blocking a swipe from the monster rex. Regardless, I was sent flying. No doubt fracturing multiples bones on impact if not for my unique physiology.

MP: 260/450

Every hit could potentially be fatal. The monster was much faster than me. It is no doubt sturdier than me as well.

I dodged its attack this time, purely out of instinct. I immediately counterattacked, yet my sword slashes only dealt a humble amount of damage resulting in a superficial wound. My magic dealt more damage, but I needed my magic power for healing magic. I could not afford to use it so nonchalantly in this situation.

The monster was simply too strong for me to overcome with skills or magic.

It was a very dire situation. As much as I hated it, I needed to use some Stat points I saved up, 20 points on each stat save for Vit. That would make it 60 points used in total.

I was not desperate enough to gamble my life away by not using them. It would still be a tough fight for sure. But no longer simply a losing game.

I could feel the power flowing into me. I was much stronger than before. The stat progression was very unfair like that. Although the monster was indeed still many times better than me stat-wise.

It was something I can make up for with my technique. The very scary monster turned into an intimidating one instead. I can have a small chance of coming through this exchange now.

Its hits were not something I can remotely shrug off, yet they were massively easier to handle. Its speed while fast was no longer so fast I could only be forced to hang on for dear life.

The before almost invulnerable-feeling skin and muscle on contact were now just impressively dense and thick.

The battle was gruesome and hardy, mostly spent in close quarters. Luckily, the rex had no regenerative abilities. Something I could not say for myself.

I simply started forgetting everything that was and that may be as the fight went on. At some moment, the lines started blurring and I could no longer feel anything else in the heat of battle.

The sounds that registered in my ears were only the sounds of steel searing against flesh and the cries and battle roars of the monster before me. The damage surrounding us was insignificant to me.

My mind overclocking, yet surprisingly calm.

I didn't know how much time has passed. I only stopped when my sword decisively cut the head of the monster. I simply stood there for a few seconds and sat on the magic stone the monster dropped upon death. It was a massive stone.

I was surrounded by signs of a massive battle. Some of the walls, and even the floor and ceilings were not spared from the onslaught.

The damage is sure to attract a lot of attention.

I was in no shape or form a battle maniac. But, I find it hard to not admit how fun that battle was for me.

'Was it the battle itself? Or the sense of improvement instead?' I thought my chest heaving back and forth.

I was interrupted when I felt something wrong in a corner of the area I was in. I saw something barely visible only if I focus on it. It kept going in and out of reality.

I knew who it belonged to, and my excitement couldn't help but cool down a bit.

'Just a bit more.' I thought shaking my head.

This encounter was a bit too close for my liking. It was highly improbable, but that is not an excuse. I hate that feeling of weakness.

The return to Rivira was a calm one. With the massive increase in my stats, it was exponentially easier to reach there. I spent most of my time just running or walking. If anything, the distance was indeed long.

I saw some adventurers going to the 24th floor, perhaps looking to inquire about what happened. There ought to be some rumors going on.

I was a pretty reclusive guy, and it was rude to ask about an adventurer's life. Besides, telling someone a level2 killed a lvl5 MonsterRex might as well be the comedian of the year.

I'm sure Hephie and Tsubaki wouldn't miss it though.

'I am not looking forward to when I meet Hephie.' I thought with a grimace.

I was put out of my thoughts when a group of adventurers jumped my way. I just reached the 19th floor on my way back.

I had an inkling of where this was going. But I didn't want to assume anything.

''Hello guys, can I help you with anything?'' I said in an amicable tone.

That got the whole group laughing. It was mainly a group of level2s, I could even identify a level3. It wasn't hard with him standing in the middle of them as some sort of king. I could see how me being relaxed would register as something funny.

It would normally take something like a level4, or a very skilled level3 to deal with something like this. And such an individual would normally be famous. Someone you would instantly recognise. You would hardly find them alone.

So they must have judged me as a level2, something that ironically was not wrong. Or maybe even a level3.

But I just couldn't see a reason why they are attacking me. Never mind the obvious insignia of the Hephaestus Familia I was still wearing. It might have a reason with my half-wrecked equipment that had the semblance of being great gear. But that just goes back to my previous point.

How hard could it be to just normally go to the dungeon with that force? Instead of resorting to banditry. Or perhaps it was something like a side-job?

''Say you actually manage to kill me. How hard do you think it will be to launch an investigation that would let Hephaestus have your heads?'' I said gesturing to my emblem.

I could see a bit of them tense up and start looking around.

My eyes widened 'Did they seriously not even think about it?' I facepalmed.
