Chapter 45: Ch 45: Turning the Tide at the Shrine

While most of the riff raff from the village ran off, the heavy hitters were still willing to fight. And now they were angry.

Lightning filled the sky as the matriarch shrieked in anger and sorrow. Her life was meaningless now. Piaras had to retreat from the air to avoid her wild tantrum.

When he landed the living trees attacked with renewed furiosity. Even the ones he had forced into Fall dormancy were moving again. The elder woman controlling them was weeping uncontrollably.

The master of the village was horribly scarred from the burns the redheaded woman caused. Most of the water he had gathered had evaporated at this point. He roared in frustration as the moisture in the air coalesced around him.

A few of the stronger villagers were also still here and made a valiant effort. But their numbers were the major thing that kept the better trained group from already winning.

The closest to Baldeur was a man with a broken sword covered in flames. He was harassing Derbail who was down to her last vine whip for protection.

The man noticed Baldeur approaching but wasn't able to keep up with his speed. The first punch torched the man's side while the second one froze the other side.

When he turned to focus on Baldeur, Derbail's vine wrapped around the man's neck and crushed it.

Not far away Haydn was fighting against three people. The air around her was a haze and her form was completely blurred. Their spells and attacks were having difficulty finding her.

She had been dealing with seven villagers before Baldeur's appearance. With the decreased numbers she was able to go on the offensive.

With a wave of her wand, hands made of rock and dirt formed and caught her attackers just as Baldeur arrived to aid her.

He was able to kill one of them while she sent flames towards the other two.

Now that their two ranged members were free from danger, Baldeur turned his attention towards where Sigurd and Aisling were fighting.

Most of the remaining villagers were focusing on them as they were harassing the villagers' ranged attackers.

"Shall we help them out?" Haydn said.

"Of course." Baldeur replied.

'Air hardens and descends from the sky: Palm of Air.' Haydn chanted as she thrust her hand downwards.

'Cinders and ash come forth. Rage for me and fall from the sky at my command to burn to my desire: Pillar of Flames.' Baldeur twirled his hand above his head before bringing it down.

Baldeur could have cast the spell with a shorter chant but it would have been suspicious for someone that had just entered the third circle to have shortened chants for his spells.

Haydn's spell went off first and a large chunk of hardened air fell on the villagers in the rear. Many of them fell to the ground or sustained damage before the spell.

With them hampered by her spell, Baldeur's spell fell among them. A brilliant pillar of fire formed among the fallen villagers.

As their lines began to break under the two area spells, Sigurd and Aisling pounced. They tore through them leaving none alive.

Next Baldeur turned to see Mathys standing among a pile of corpses. He had gone wild not caring if he was hurt in the process. The villagers tried to contain him but he was a mad man.

He was breathing heavily and could barely stand. Blood flowed from various wounds on his body. His once handsome face was partially burned and his one good eye was bloodshot and wide open.

They quickly helped clean up those that were still around him.

Mathys tried to join in the last of the fighting but Sigurd intercepted him.

"I think you should sit the rest of this out." Sigurd said.

"No, I have to fight. I am a hero." Mathys replied.

Knowing that arguing would be pointless, Sigurd looked towards Derbail. She waved her hands and spread her fingers wide. Glowing pollen moved from her to Mathys where it put him into a deep slumber.

Nilo and the elf were taking care of the last of the regular villagers. Once the rest of them joined in, that part of the battle was over.

Piaras had been on the major defensive since Baldeur enraged them. He only went on the offensive when the matriarch tried to go after Baldeur.

If he wanted to take the risk he could have gone all out and won the fight with some major wounds as payment. But he knew that with most of the villagers having run and Baldeur joining in the fight, their side would soon come out on top.

"Shall we go for the combination attack again?" Haydn asked.

"I'll be to my limit after but we might as well." Baldeur replied.

Before the two of them cast their spells they felt a warmth envelope them as the power of Spring from Derbail removed their fatigue and gave them a boost in power.

'Palm of Air.'

'Pillar of Flames.'

They concentrated their spells on the old woman that was controlling the living trees. After their empowered spells landed many of the trees broke apart and the old woman fell to the ground.

As she tried to rise again, Aisling was already behind her. With her claws wrapped in Wrath Flames she shredded the old woman's back, ending her life.

"Nooo!" The matriarch yelled. "You will pay for this sacrilege. I curse all of you! Curse you to pain, despair, and Death!"

As she raged, Sigurd had moved to her blind side and released pure Mana from his sword towards her back.

She sensed the danger and turned to defend from the sneak attack only to leave herself open for Piaras.

The silver wolf moved with lightning speed, biting into their neck and shoulder. He pulled his head back tearing her flesh. Blood poured out as the matriarch fell from the sky.

The last of their enemies was being taken care of by Nilo and the two other women.

When the elf's arrows passed through the village master's water it froze, leaving him vulnerable to the phoenix's flames. In the end it was Nilo that took advantage of an opening to thrust his sword through the man's heart.

With the last of the enemies dead, they began to relax and recuperate.
